View Full Version : What do you carry your long stuff in?

What do the folks that own big long lens use to carry them in. More to the point, there are not really any shoulder bags made that will take a 10d plus 100-300 f4 with the ability to carry another lens or 2. There is always a packpack but that is slow getting stuff out of. Was thinking of using a LowePro TopLoader AW if the Sigma will fit in it. Use a Lowe SlipLoc lens case to hold the 70-200 and I should be good to go. Anyone have any tricks up their sleeves?
Of course I could do like Tom and have a 10d body for every lens but that would cancel the ability to eat and pay the morgage. I would probably have to return Gitzo as well being unable to buy his pellets :)

Have you thought about using that extra leg warmer?

When my wife and I go out shooting we use our LowePro backpacks. I have a Mini-Trekker and she has the Micro-Trekker. That pretty much hauls everything we have (for now). But, we now at max level with the collection we've massed. I also have a big LowePro bag for hauling everything in at once if needed and that will definitely hold everything we have (an more).
In the near future, I expect to add a wide-angle L lens and probably a 400/500 prime. Maybe a macro-dedicated lens and that'll be about it for lenses. Once I gather that stuff, we'll have to upgrade our backpacks.

I have the lowepro toploader pro AW and it will fit my 10D with grip and a 100-400 L IS in it nicely. I can also get the 17-40L and 50mm F1.8 in there too plus all the small accessories I use. It is a good bag, my current favourite :)

Jim:
I know you and your wife haul all this stuff between the two of you, but what do you carry when you're just by yourself?

Tom,
Extra leg warmer is candycane stripped. Clashes with the 10d.
Richard,
Going to check out the AW this morning. Sounds exactly what I'm looking for.

I've got a LowePro Omni Trekker. Plenty of room, quick access. It's more or less like a laptop bag. Big flap opens to a large space. Plenty of velcro-able dividers. Holds my 10D + 1.4 + 70-200 assembled, 4 more lens, assorted doodads, and a space left over for the 100-400 that's coming sometime. Nice padded shoulder strap, converts to a backpack if desired. Nice bag.

I take the 10D, 28-135, 50, 70-200, 550EX and 100-400 if I need it. Depends on what I'm shooting. Also all my (10D) cards and associated little doo-dads come with the camera in the backpack too.
The D60 has it's own gathering of stuff that goes with it.

OK I did it. Wandered down to the local shop (owner is calling me by my first name and offering to wash my truck) and picked up a Toploader 75 AW along with a LC4 lens case. The 10d with the Sigma 100-300 f4 fits in the Toploader just right with room on the side for the 1.4TC. The lens case holds either the 100-300 or the 70-200 f2.8 depending which lens is on the body. There are a couple of front pockets on the TL that hold spare batteries and othe small stuff. Nice light rig (considering the lenses) and very portable. The Toploader comes with a chest harness that is sort of neat but I look like I'm wearing a parachute when it is worn in front.
Thank goodness all the stores are closed the next couple of days. Got to go back to work next week and sell some bikes to pay for all the stuff bought over the holidays:)
Many thanks for your input as to your carry systems.
