Any suggestions on how to protect images? Not sure how Digimarc watermarking actually works...just wondering what is being used these days.

Watermarking can be done just by creating a text right on the image. There are a couple ways of doing this but I need to say, if you are wanting to watermark an image to deter image theft then you may very well be wasting your time. Most visible watermarks can be cloned out. There are services available that tracks your image on the internet but are costly. Digimark has a few services available. http://www.digimarc.com/products/default.asp
There is also making it so that right clicking is disabled. http://www.hypergurl.com/htmlProtector.html
You need to ask yourself, do I want to keep people from downloading my images or do I just want to be able to prove it is mine?
Now if all you want is to put something on your image saying it is yours then you can apply text in photoshop and apply opacity.
Here is a tutorial to show you how. http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/photoshop/ht/apswatermark.htm
