How about an option of generating a Google sitemap of groups/exhibitions/photos in the database?

I second this request. I need this bad, as most of the sitemap generators can't scan my site.

the only problem i have with this, and i had it when pekka first described it, is that ee is only one part of my site... i've over 250 links in my handcoded sitemap and that's not even counting ee, my forums, or several software documents that i'm translating from russian to english where all contain their own mass of links within themselves...
so my problem is how am i to add this sitemap to my existing one?? or am i?
should i, instead, run ee (and my forums) as subdomains off of my main domain? (ie: gallery.my.domain.null vs. my.domain.null/gallery/)

Well, you could just cat the notional EE auto-generated sitemap file with your hand edited sitemap file to create the master sitemap file.
The need to update a sitemap by hand when many hundreds of pages of photos is a huge task, and the data to generate a sitemap with EE is, I believe, in the EE database already.

Basically all this needs is a variation of SCRIPT_structure_ul.php or SCRIPT_rss2.php which would build the Google sitemap according to their syntax. Personally I can say I do not have time to do that in near future.
EE has several arrays available for every page, those arrays contain all the data you need for making live structure maps.
But, I would like to point out (again) that if you really type good photo titles and gallery names and descriptions, Google will place them very high and fast without any extra sitemaps.
I have used simple descriptive photo titles and Google places them all in top places: from my new gallery (couple of weeks old):
http://www.google.com/search?hs=pFB&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=NHK+Concert+Hall&btnG=Search
http://www.google.com/search?hs=hHB&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=Sanna+Niemikunnas&btnG=Search
http://www.google.com/search?hs=FGB&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=Zoltan+Takacs&btnG=Search
http://www.google.com/search?hs=ucq&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=Jonathan+Harvey+photo&btnG=Search
etc.
If your photo titles are like "New Photo HV899324_b.jpg" you have no chance of getting it indexed or found.

well, that is an option, i guess... just snatch it from the page source... hummm...

yes, it can be a huge task... in my case, i take the easy way out and use a sitemap generator which i then take the results of and hand edit to the format i desire... the generator i use has not been able to get thru EEv1.5 or my phpbb power forums so all i can do with them is to place a pointer to the top of them...

now this looks to be rather interesting... if i can get the snippets to work as i desire (ie: no http access to the code libraries), then i may very well be able to link that code right into my sitemap stuff that i currently have... hummm...

sadly, there are only so many ways to name or describe photos of hummingbirds, lilys, peppers, engine parts, and such ;)

no, my descriptions aren't that bad but there are many that do carry the name that the camera assigned when the picture was taken...
i don't know if i'll ever get all the ones from my grandmother's 100th :!: birthday put in... there are over 300 from numerous "photographers" and they were all shoved onto one CD which was given to those that wanted a copy... there are no notes or indicators of who took what or even of who is in the pictures... that was last year... i've probably another 100 or so from this years 101st celebration which was much smaller and only family members...

Figured a single cross-post might help out those subscribed to this thread - Exhibit Engine XML Sitemap Generator Code (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=7342197).
