View Full Version : Lens \"play\"

How many of you with 10D cmeras have some discernable rotational "play" in a mounted lens? I notice it a lot more on my new 70-200 2.8L than on my 28-105 USM2, which is nearly perfect. The 70-200, I can rotationally "rattle" when "locked" in place. It seems to have less of a snug fit to the bayonette ring than the other lens or my 1.4 TC does. It's not a "loose" fit, but if I grab the zoom ring and go right-left, I hear and feel a little rotational "wiggle' in the mount. Holding onto the tripod mount and rotating produces an even more noticable amount of play.
Is this common?

This has happened to me with the D60 and that lens. It has only caused a problem a few times when shooting football. I normally shoot from a monopod and when panning with a hand on the lens and one on the body, I put the connection in a little of a bind. It shuts the cmera down with an error, rebooting the camera works to bring back communication. It is not a "snug fit" there is some slop.
My question, Can it be adjusted?

My 100-400 has just a tick of play but nothing that effects anything. My 70-200 is as tight as a drum as all my other lenses are. I haven't really checked it out that close but in may case, at least, it does nto seem to be the actual lens mount but the lens itself.

I have the 400mm f/5.6L, and it 'chatters' when I manually focus it, but it still take 'tack sharp' pictures. Solution: trust the AF. It hasn't let me down yet.
Happy New Year everybody. I just returned from a most memorable meal, and I'm feeling no pain. Wine will do that.

I hear the worms have protein. Guess that makes tequila a health food if you're on the Atkins diet.
Happy New Year, Gizmo.

Very very slight play while holding on to the tripod mount. Mine's brand new, about 5 days old (we just celebrated her fifth a little while ago (click, click, click, click, click).

None, in any of my lenses, or either of the bodies.

My Sigma 70-210f2.8 APO has some play but it doesn't interfere with the operation.
Greetings,
Frank

Just a wee bit of play in my Tamron 28-135. Doesn't effect the operation.
Cheers to the New Year!

I actually noticed a *little* play in my 100-400L yesterday. Glad I am not alone or I'd be concerned :D

Guess I'm lucky. Neither my Canon 28-135 IS USM nor my crappy Canon 100-300 USM has any play - It's a tight fit for both of them.

I tried a little whine once but the wife would not listen.
Hold on...let me reread Toms post.......
Damn...wrong whine.
Tom,
Your indulgance has left a bad impression on Gitzo. He is currently flat out on his back with three legs straight up in the air........looks even funnier than when he is standing.
Guess I forgot to put away the bottle of Brandy.
Ian
Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!
Ian:
You failed to interpret Gitzo’s body language. When he lays on his back like that, that means, ‘He wants you.’ Apparently you’ve made quite an impression on the little guy.
At this point I was going to make a Michael Jackson reference regarding plying someone (or something) of questionable capacity with alcohol, but on reconsideration, there’s just nothing funny about that poor tortured soul.
Happy New Year, Ian.

And here is me thinking that Gitzo was just s*%^faced.
I was wondering why he kept stareing at the dog and smiling.
Happy New Year to you and yours Tom.
Going out this afternoon and doing another deer safari. Weather has finally cleared and hopefully the deer are not too hungover (a la Gitzo)
Ian
I will post any results

Since you've taken such a liking to Gitzo, I thought you should have a picture of him. Please note that in one of the views, he's wearing his prosthetic device.

No problem---just use PhotoShop to put it his head at the other end.
One-legged Bogen---Oh, you are a sick one. :)

And Bogen is old too, I can tell because of his "balled" head.
