Has anyone else experienced this? Should there be cause for concern? The flash works fine but I was wondering if there's anything wrong.

See page 48 of the instruction manual.

If you are speaking of the little flash icon, it is blinking because you have the flash in it's low-most position, which is for shooting closeups. Lift up gently on the flash head and it will stop.

Or do you have the wide panel down?

No, I mean the entire LED screen is blinking. Onion56, what is the wide panel?

Thanks. You know I have taken some heat for my sig from some people. For some reason they get all defensive when they see my sig. I just think that for some people it can turn into a competition as to who has the latest and best gear.

If I wanted to know what page this problem is addressed in the instruction manual then don't you think I would have asked that?I don't provide answers like that to be a smarta$$. I suggest reading your instruction manual because it's really, really helpful.
The fact is, I don't own a 580EX. Never have. But I downloaded the manual a while ago while doing some research. I was able to open the file and go to the troubleshooting section and find the answer to your question in less time than it took you to type the question in the first place. It perplexes me when people insist on looking for anwers the hard way.
If you don't have one, you can download it from Canon's download library.

It's the little frosted type of panel thing that slides out, along with the white catchlight card. If it is out and over your flash (for shots with a wide angle) the screen should blink - just as an alert.
