Chimping is a tendency to gawp at the lcd of your camera after taking a photo.
I bought Gawper.com and have still yet to find a use for it, maybe it should be turned in to a photo chimping site :)

Offer it to channel 5 in the UK -They have a program called 'Extraordinary People' where people who are really unusual (like have odd medical conditions) get an episode dedicated to them. It is on the very boundaries of acceptable taste & gawper.com would be it's ideal internet home!!

HAHA congrats!
I think there are a few posts in the 85 1.8 archive where both of us are saying 'wtf I'd never buy the 85L, I don't see how it's worth that much more than the 85 1.8'. Oh how things change :p.

Stop reminding people of my previous statements :D
I'm not using my rig to shoot street much anymore (too big, waiting for rangefinder/M9) so after selling my wide Ls, my fastest lens was the 85 at 1.8... I need at least another stop to be happy and since I bought used, I can eventually sell it for what I paid. I'm doing more people / babies / family, etc, so I thought this would be a good fit. And I said to myself, if Perry can go back on all of what he said before about this lens, so can I.
I would've got the 50L if it weren't plagued (oh and APO? did I hear you wishing for that, too? hehe)

:lol: Fair enough. And yes. A real APO lens from Canon is something I would like very much. Now that I have the 400L, I don't know what the 200L's status in my bag is anymore...I'm considering selling it and just completing the trinity.

Oh I will.
I'd only change the 200 <> 135 if the focal length bothers you. I can't see how the 135 is any better than the 200 in real world use... it is just more popular since if people want 200/2.8, most will get the zoom.
400L eh? Now you're a real birder :D
oh back on topic... how slow is this lens, really? Will I be buying another 85/1.8 in the future for fast moving subjects? (since nothing is more important than pictures of our pets -- like my dog chasing the cat... could the 85L have kept up with this in Servo on a 1 series?)

Yeah. No more 200L + T-cons for birding. I love 200mm, but the 135L would be good I think for headshots and times when I need faster AF than the 85L and faster glass than f/2.8.
The 85L is SLOW. The focus throw is massive, so it takes ages to go from one end of the range to the other. But if you're already prefocused in the ballpark of where you wanna be, it's not that bad, it's pretty quick in those cases. Make sure you focus with the * button and not half press so you can actually get full time manual.

I've got the outside parts of the trinity, but lack an 85 anything. I like my 50 1.4 but haven't decided whether to sell it and go 85 1.8 now that I just got the 35L this past week (and LOVED IT!!! at the wedding I just did, how did I ever live without it? lol)... 85 1.2 is really heavy and bulky I find, so for now I just like looking at all your fabulous shots and drooling and contemplating. Considering how much I've liked parts 1 & 2 of my 2 part trinity, it makes me wonder about part 3, this lens...
Thankfully I'm really broke right now (in photography money terms), so it will continue to be a "wonder" for at least another several months...

Well lets say 99% of people who own both a 40 and 85L haha. I have read numerous posts on here and FM along with a few off the wall forums and the only conclusion people can come up with is that is seems to be "too much glass" in the 85L for the 40D to handle.
There is a guy in my area here who had had his 40D to canon 4 times within a year to fix this problem and canon cant even give him an answer. All they told him over the phone was "The 85L is a huge chunk of glass for a 40D to move" ???

cheers jason well they will have to move some cash or a replacement camera that works with the lens as im keeping the 85L, both are still under warranty. On the huge chunk of glass to handle point ive tried it with my 300d and with my eos 500 35mm and my friend has tried it with his 20d no drain probs with any o those cameras, ps ive tried lots of different batterys and different senarios and its deffo a 40d specific prob imho

Yes, it is a 40D specific problem. I never had any issues with the 85L on either of my 400Ds, and neither on the 5D. And the Canon Service Centre to which my 40D went, did recreate the problem on one of their own 40Ds.
Someone on the forum here actually seems to have his fixed, however, but I can't remember who it was.
I am not too worried anymore, as I just use it on the 5D :D.

I'm not sure I would trust using any TC on this lens. At infinity, the rear element is completely flush with the mount, if anything is in that space, it will hit it.

I can't use a Canon Tele-extender on my 85 1.2 because it'll bang into the rear element on the lens. Maybe there is some other brand that will line up. Boy I'd hate to scratch that huge back element trying though. Don't need it anyway with the 135L f2, faster focus and incredibly sharp with more than enough bokeh wide open. They actually compliment each other on a FF.

So the problem with this lens and the 40d is battery draw/drain? Wouldnt a grip be a simple solution to this problem if someone really wanted to use this lens?
Oteck
31st of December 2008 (Wed), 14:16
It might fix it but i think the problem lies with the fail safe system on the 40D. Probably think big draw of power to focus the keg tips off a fuse and shuts down automatically.
Greg_C
31st of December 2008 (Wed), 16:15
The battery grip doesn't fix the problem. I have a gripped 40D and the 85L and shoot with this combo a lot. I've seen this problem on my 40D but it doesn't happen every time I use the 85L, there must be a certain combination of factors that are causing it.
Just to keep things on topic.....

Nope, been there done that. It doesn't fix it. You don't even get close to twice the amount of shots with two batteries installed before the 40D decides to shut down.

I always carry 4 extra batteries. It doesn't matter if I use a 40D or a 5D, the 85IIL drains power quicker than an old IS lens. It's a feature of the lens...

with my 40D and the borrowed 85L II i was getting maybe 5 or 10 shots and then it would fail while focusing and shut the camera off.
the camera wouldnt reboot unless i disconnected the lens and reconnected it, or another lens. if i put a different lens on, i could then shoot all day with the same "dead" battery. i ended up using the 85L on my 350D and other lenses on my 40D... was very frustrating - but i still absolutely loved it and want one of my own

^^ She looks like a very 'serious' type of personality. Correct the White Balance in the first one, and it'll add warmth to a winner. Second one is just as nice.
Thanks. Took your advice and brought the balance up from 4500 to 5000. Hope this looks a little better. :)

Gettin' there.
Use DPP (Canon Software) and using the eye dropper tool (on the RAW image), click on a white space in her eye...see if that warms it up a bit. ;)

OK, I dont know what DPP is but I used CS2 and started again with the raw image. I think it might have come out a bit too warm. What do you think?

I think you've done well with the girl. My only problem with the shot is the background -- I think the color and tone of the background take away from the shot rather than ccompliment it. Maybe it's mainly about the green not complimenting the purple jacket most of all.
But, I'm no expert in working with background for this type of thing, and maybe others will have a different view:)!

I always carry 4 extra batteries. It doesn't matter if I use a 40D or a 5D, the 85IIL drains power quicker than an old IS lens. It's a feature of the lens...
Well, I've got 9 batteries now. It was a pain when I only had the 40D, because I only had 3 batteries then. I only managed about 60 shots with the 85L, although I could still use any other lens for many hundreds of shots with the same batteries :).
With the 5D, I get at least 150 shots with the 85L II, which is quite a difference...
Kind regards, Wim

with my 40D and the borrowed 85L II i was getting maybe 5 or 10 shots and then it would fail while focusing and shut the camera off.
Try just switching the camera off and on again. That is what I do...
the camera wouldnt reboot unless i disconnected the lens and reconnected it, or another lens. if i put a different lens on, i could then shoot all day with the same "dead" battery. i ended up using the 85L on my 350D and other lenses on my 40D... was very frustrating - but i still absolutely loved it and want one of my own
Nice pictures!

Hmm - I usually use my 85L on my 5D but I had in on the 40D with the grip attached and two batteries loaded. After a couple of shots the battery power icon flashed at me. Switch on & off and suddenly I was at full power again!

Yeah. Mine is too sharp wide open - I soften almost all of my shots with the 85L in post, even wide open. The shot in question could be because it was high ISO, low light, with the kinds of highlights that bring the CA out of this lens.

They can fix it but It would probably mean a fluorite element and that means more $$$$. The only FAST Canon lens f/2 or faster that I've shot with that I don't see any CA worth mentioning is the 200 2L. Would you be willing to pay another $500-$1000 for an 85 1.2? 1.2 is AWFULLY fast for an 85 and in fact it smokes the Nikon 85 1.4 in CA wide open and its sharper.

Sorry guys I was trolling, my lens is fine wide open, my attempt at humor sort of backfired :( That shot is ISO 3200 in the worst light possible, pointed at a metal object that is heavily CA prone
Airfrogusmc, sorry I was referring to my battery metering issues, not the CA wide open, I've found the CA wide open to be an annoyance but an acceptable compromise
I deeply apologise for besmirching the name of this lens :D, here's a review I wrote up on it for anyone considering purchasing it for a 1.6X body:

Have to be honest with you, we did the North traveled down South of Vietnam and the North was so much more interesting for me. The Mekong Delta was good but there were areas in the north like Hanoi and Sapa were I could have spent weeks just walking around and shooting. Its probably got something to do with the south being more developed unfortunately. But thanks for swinging by my flickr.

Man those are some sweet shots - the first one is great with the back lighting.
I took a load of shots in Hue as well on the way down to Hoi An. I have to say the street noodle bars were fantastic esp in Hue. I didn't realise that each area specialised in its own type of noodles. Shame we didn't make contact earlier otherwise it would have been good to hook up for a meal.

I've only had it for a day now. I'm loving it. Can't wait to get out and shoot something interesting.
