I thought the f/1.8 lens gave 99.9999% of the same performance as the f/1.2?
As Perry mentioned: NO. Full-stop.

I had a 85 F/1.8. I thought I would be fine with that. Then I could get a used 85L II at a relatively good price, 25% below new and only 1 year old. The F/1.8 never got camera time anymore, and I sold it.

Slow focus? Yeah, yeah, you can work around that. We did that all the time in analog days. Prefocus, and you're fine, generally speaking.

IMO, the F/1.8 can't hold a candle to it, certainly not the 3 copies I tested, of which I kept one for a while :D. And for low light shooting, well, the 85L II only gets better. At F/1.2 it is sharper than the F/1.8 at F/1.8 and F/2. At F/1.4 it is sharper than the F/1.8 at F/2.2 and F/2.5. And from F/2 to F/11 it beats many a lens handsomely, not only the 85 F/1.8. And we didn't even talk bokeh yet.

I've been told by someone who has been in photography retail for over 40 years, and who still is, with one of the largest retailers in the country here, that even Leitz is jealous of this lens.

Kind regards, Wim

Have you ever tryed a f1.2 version ?

IMO didn't find it to slow to focus. And on crop, f1.2 is giving much more bokeh than f1.8 version.

At least, 85L is usable and tack sharp at widest aperture ! Not mine version of f1.8...

I do the same thing to all my photos for the most part.

A mild color pop - drop the opacity lower for indoors, and leave it higher for outdoors. Then I did a curves boost and sharpened the entire image. The crop of the eyes is after all that. I didn't do anything selectively to the eyes, but the image was sharpened overall before I took the crop of the eyes. :)

A 'KEG' is a metal barrel filled with beer. Rather 'heavy' and 'large' and as such, it correlates that way to the 85L.

A hood's not going to help with the sun directly in front of the lens. The hood just covers the off axis sun coverage. I can't remember the last time I used a hood...completely pointless IMO. The only lens that i've owned that had a noticable improvement by adding a hood was my Sigma 70-200/2.8. Even on a moderately sunny day I noticed more contrast when I used a hood. But these days, Canon's lens coatings are so good it almost makes a hood redundant.

Steve, I think you'll find that's an added Vignette in PS or Lightroom. I can see the digital steps in the fades.

As to 85IIL hoods, I don't take mine with me...it's just too big and cumbersome and makes an intimidating lens look almost predetory. What I use is the TS-e 45mm's hood. Same fittings but about half the depth...it's a lot more managable and looks a lot better too.

Thanks, KuyaRich. See... the way I see the lens is not the full price, but... rather if I resell it at a later time, how much will it depreciate. That's the amount I see it as. You will see that it's WAY worth it for this lens. No other lens can produce the image that this lens can. Maybe the 135 f/2..., but at a much longer focal length.

^ I'm hoping to jump on a 5D soon, was wondering whether or not 135L or 85L will be better for portraits.

Mike, was his hand-held? Running arund in the rain would make it seem so -- the in-focus part to me lacks the crispness that is needed to make these images "pop". At least to me. Shooting with these wide apertures can be a real pain to "get it right"!

I think the softness makes the photo, to be honest with you.. I think that first one you posted is stellar. There is no need to have every image with cutting sharpness. I love the colors and the composition...great photo.

thanks! i got the singh-ray variND (2-8stops). i had the 3 and 6stops but the variND comes in handy since I can change easier without having to swap filters. expensive but its worth it for me since i shoot often between f1.2-f2.8 using flashes during the day :)

Thanks for the info. Might have to invest in one, since I love using the 85L for model shoots. Outdoors in FL, though, it's always bright as heck. This may just make all the difference. Do you balance them out with a gray card? Or is that not necessary when using the vari-ND?

Now, I just need more skills.

no gray card even though i do have a whibal card. i also had 1/2 CTO gel on the flash to give it some warmth. i feel you on that FL sunshine, i deal with it too. Im in orlando, not too far from st augustine :)

Cool. Now I know two of you dudes down there. You and Reyno. I'll hit ya up, once I'm back in the area. A few models I've been meaning to work with, I just don't get much time on weekends, to go down there. Soon enough...!

Where do you source your models, just curiously? MM? or somewhere else?

Ah yes, another thread that led to no good. I no longer dislike the 70-200mm f2.8 IS thread because I have since picked up the lens.

Likewise I will probably hold less animosity for this thread after I scrape enough pennies together and grab an 85L.

And all because of this damnable thread.

bw! Im sorry this made me laugh out loud. This is exactly how I feel. I want this lens so badly, I got my financial aid money and this is the first purchase I think I will be making with it.

Just don't go around that "5D Classic Admirers" thread -- they are a bunch of lunatics anyway, but when they get to talking about how the 85L behaves on the 5D, kinda magical, well, I swear there is foam coming out of their mouths...it's scary!

Found these in a favorite garden of mine and discovered that 1.8 or so is kinda the sweet spot of sorts.

These are from my 5D, 85L, one 25mm tube and 30 degree no gloves hands
