I'm not very experienced at all, but what i do know is this, if a photo keeps giving overtime you take a look (and want to revisit to take another look) its a good one, your second shot is truly superb in that it leaves me wondering what's going on the other side of the bridge, there's an element of unknown and caution, to be had crossing this bridge.

Thanks, all. I really love it too. It was just the right moment of him looking up and being in awe. His first ever time at an aquarium. (1 year 4 months). So, EVERYTHING to him was exciting. But, the bubble really did it for him. :)

That aquarium shot is absolutely stunning. If I ever get a shot that good of my daughter, I will be extremely excited (I've got quite a few good shots...but none that good).

Anyway, I visited a nice little spot I have been to before. There's this shack at the edge of an explosives range that I drive by once in a while, along with all sorts of danger signs and the like, all in bad condition. Stopped there for a few quick shots today. Both wide open at f/1.2, with 3 stop ND filter. Vignetting added in post.

I like the contrast of the B & W. With the snow on the rusty iron rivets and the trees in the background. Truth be known as a teen I use to go over this bridge in my car and it was rickity then. Now closed to all but foot traffic for the past 30 years. This area provides me fond memories :)

Its good but does need some good quality time to be able to get the best outta it. So its a bit of both I'd say.

Jman13
6th of March 2009 (Fri), 21:18
A bit of both. It is really that good. It's sharper at f/1.2 than the Canon 50 f/1.4 is at f/1.8...that's a heck of an accomplishment. It is crazy sharp with incredible bokeh and simply stunning colors. It really is exceptional at any aperture, which is simply amazing for a lens this fast. The 'holy trinity' of primes is dubbed so because they really are simply spectacular optics. I've been lucky enough to own all three, though I no longer have the 135L.

24x24 soft box on a stand with 580ex mk1 attached set @ 1/4 fec and connected to Pocket Wizard II, 430ex on stand sets @ 1/8 fec with 1/4" grill connected to Pocket Wizard II and 5D also with Pocket Wizard. It aint mine. It was my friends when we had a model shoot here in my place. I am pleased with the result so I'm saving up for my own set. ;-) Just play with the angle where you want to position the flashes and watch the flash FEC settings.

Basically you need at least couple of flash - three would be better, at least 3 Pocket Wiz, a soft box, grill diffuser for the flash and stands. Hope it helps.

BTW, I forgot to mention, this setup is geared more for outdoor portability usage because the whole system setup use flashes and batteries only compare to more powerful strobes that requires A/C power. Your choice of setup depends on what route and subjects you want to shoot.

Thanks, Perry. I have a confession to make: That night I was a little out of it as I woke early and didn't even have a coffee before I took off out the door. I only recently set the focus to the * button and in my haste (in the blasted cold) I forgot to focus. Lucky that I had closed up the aperture or I would have had frozen my sleepy butt off for nothing!

I ordered one today, it will be replacing my 85mm f/1.8, and possibly my 135 f/2 also. It was between this lens and the 35L, and the 35L wasn't in stock where I wanted to buy it from, so...

I assume, and hope, that I will never sell this lens; afaik there is no upgrade, it is the best in its class for Canon. Just like my 70-200 f/2.8 IS, 135L, and 24-70L. I am only two best-in-class lenses short of completing my collection.

In a way, I already regret my purchase - because of the cost. It's an incredible drain on my finances; I only hope that it will pay for itself.

Congrats on the purchase! You won't regret it, trust me! Since Canon only raise prices and it is really hard to get your hand on one of these in Canada now! Save up and get the 35L:p

I didn't put that there; blame the moderators for taking advantage of something I said probably a year ago.

Really, there are only two other lenses I want to have now: 35L, and either 16-35 or tokina 11-16. That would complete my lens collection. On hindsight, I probably should've just stuck with primes from the start, but really the good ones were so far out of my price range back when I started that it would've been pretty close to impossible.

I sold my 85mm f/1.8 and 135L to fund (partially) the 85L. As much as I loved the sharpness & bokeh from my 135L, it is just too long for my shooting style. Plus I have the 70-200L f/2.8 IS. I absolutely LOVE my 85L. I haven't regretted selling my 135L for a second. Next, the 35L. :)

My 135L is a really good copy, otherwise I would have probably sold it already too. I just really hate to get rid of a lens whose optical qualities I really like, so I've only decided for sure to sell the 85 f/1.8. The 135L is still on the fence.

Sounds like you're following the same upgrade path as me and your equipment is similar. My purchases are being made almost exclusively for wedding work, and the fast primes are going to enable me to shoot in our wonderfully dim casino resorts. I've walked around and seen what ISOs and apertures I can get certain shots at inside a few resorts now (right before a wedding shoot I scout the area), and there seems to be this magical cutoff where ambient light is just about enough for a fast f/1.4 prime, but not nearly enough for a zoom, and not necessarily enough for an f/1.8 or f/2 prime.

I really want to offer things that many other local budget/middle photographers don't. I know that composition is important and I want to work on that, but there are some things you can't get with more basic equipment and I know what could be used to get those shots. For instance, using a very strong ND filter in daylight with fill flash would provide narrow DoF in circumstances most people wouldn't do. And shooting in many areas of the resorts requires the fastest lenses possible...which I'm getting now, at long last.

The expense is just killing me though; I'm always afraid I won't recover my costs.
