Yes but it still doesn't perform miracles.
Okay, my experimentation with a guitar and a direct flash. I thought the effect was really interesting, especially in the second. You can really see the CA on OOF areas too, but the way it diffuses the strings into cones like that...weird stuff.

That's too bad. Once you get your business running smoothly I hope you take the time to actually go out and shoot for yourself a little. Otherwise, it could quickly become nothing more than a job and you might lose some of your passion.
Many people that have turned hobbies into careers have succumbed to this phenomena. Ask any older gigolo.

Yes you see, that's one really good reason for fast primes in vegas: the ambient light is just barely enough to get some good shots at f/1.2-1.4, but not nearly enough for a zoom.

Don't try it out unless you're prepared to spend the bucks for it. If you use it and have to give it up you're not going to be a happy camper. I've got an 85 1.8, and borrowed an 85L II for a week recently. I can't wait to put the money together for the L.

Here is a recent shoot I did for a friend, all images were shot with the 5d mark II and the 85L II. I think these images show off how good this lens is in capturing light. I used a 580ex on a pocket wizard at 1/32 power and apertures b/w 1.2 - 2.2 for most shots.
no editing has been done other than cropping and color balance.

They are two different beasts, seriously. I wouldn't compare them because they have different characteristics/qualities. I'd have both, but at this time I have only the L and use it for special purposes. I think the 85 1.8 is useful for several things, especially things requiring fast focus (think sports/action type of stuff). And, it's great for portraits, just not capable of the stunning effects you can get from the f/1.2.

I don't shoot anything other than lifestyle portraits and soon to be a ton of weddings. I'm trying to build my kit around wedding shooting.
I was debating the 50L vs 85L (I want that bokeh). If I got the 50L I'd be shooting a 35L, 50L, and 85 1.8. If I got the 85L I'd just use the 35L and 85L. Decisions, decisions...

Heh! I feel for you!
How much the 85L will do for you depends on whether the focal length is really useful to you. I am not a portrait/wedding photographer, and I don't want to give you presumptuous advice, so I'll only suggest that if you find that focal length useful to you for the work you do, the 85L delivers pretty stunning results.

the 35 and 85L = my two fav lens. bokeh on the 85L is just amazinggg (and course the 35 too). thus the reason i picked up hte 50L as well. gotta love that bokeh. from when I had rented a 50L, the 35 and 85 is sharper wide open but 50L is no slouch though.
i think the 35 and 85L for your style of shooting would make for a killer combo. for your lifestyle stuff and also weddings :)

Once you do, 35/85 combo on 2 bodies... you would never go back! At least I haven't!
See that's exactly what I'm thinking, those two would be my main equipment and everything else would become secondary to them. Tonight I did a shoot where I was sorely wanting the fast aperture of my 85L on a wider lens, to switch around, change up more, give more angles...but I had no 35L.

Just a snapshot, but I just got it and wanted to see how hard it would be to nail the AF at 1.2.
Honestly some folk and reviews nearly scared me away from this lens. I'm glad y'all in this thread were so strident in your fanboyishness. This lens is amazing. AF is plenty fast. Not 70-200 2.8 IS fast, but plenty fast enough. Getting sharp images is way easier than I anticipated. I haven't even changed my focus to * yet. I just had it on AI Focus and selected the center AF point. Most my shots were sharp, even at 100 crop.
Simply an amazing lens. I really do understand the hype. I can't wait to put it to more artistic use.

I don't know why I bother bringing anything to shoots other than the 5D + 85L. I brought the 50L, 135L, 24-105L and 1D Mark III today. Did I use any of them? Hells no. Out in the freezing cold, the 5D and 85L did all the work. (It was just over 0 degrees today during the shoot, no way was I gonna make the models get into swimwear and into the water).

Thanks Perry definately the look I go for. Its a much different look than you get with strobes. Just sent the 35L into Canon for a good cleaning and calabration. I bumped it pretty good over the weekend and after that seemed to be a bit front focusing. Think I might pick up a 50L in late July early August. Most of my clients are on July1-June 30 fiscals and everthing I'm shooting now was already budgeted. I did loose one fairly large job and had one client tell me their budget was cut by 10% and then went on to hire me for a job in September. Maybe I'll have Canon send me one to check out...

Yeah it was. It landed on carpet but it was a good tumble. Its never been in to be cleaned or checked. Starting to see some dust between the elements; its time so I figured I'd have them calibrate it while they were at it.
Scars? I call it patina....

thats what i did when i got mines :) .. i sold the 70-200 f2.8IS to buy the 85L. i had the 70-200 for about 7-8months and only used it a handful of times. Since getting the 85L, ive shot over 50% of my photos with it. Id say, it was worth it to me. :D

Exactly.
When I went to the zoo last December, I couldn't imagine not having this lens. And when the time arrives and I want some reach, she is always there to perform. Sharp, focus and lightning fast. But really, other than that, I rarelt use it.

+1
Totally different tools. In fact, I wouldn't even consider the 85L a replacement for the 85 1.8 -- again, totally different tools. The 85L is, to me, kind of like a brush for creating art, but when you need a power sprayer, pick up the 70-200 or the 85 1.8.
Lousy analogy, but, hey...

The lens does not perform magic without someone who can make it do so. I only bought the 85L because I really, REALLY needed the extra light it could give me.
70-200 is great for the ceremony, and it does what I couldn't get the 85L to do in those circumstances: Zoom in and out for differently framed shots and really, really quickly and easily track moving subjects.

Agreed. I found that you need to have some pretty specific (and often controlled) circumstances to really get the best from this lens. I probably wouldn't rely on it as a walk-around, or anything like that.

The 35L on FF for street suff is king....The 85 is a bit long I also like just going out with the 24L but the combo of 1 5D with the 35L and the other with the 85L really can't be beat...

I'm happy for you.
A true walk-around for me (and I'm talking for me) is something with a little bit of range, focal-length wise. That's not to say that you can't use it for your walk-around lens, but for such things, it wouldn't be my first choice.
