Does upgrading the Mk1 version of this to the Mk2 version justify the cost? Is the 1.8 af speed increase worth it? plus the silent motor?
Other than that, my Mk1 copy was amazing until it got stolen. Should I get the Mk1 again or the Mk2?

Thanks:)
Well a 5DMKII and a 300 2.8IS would be ideal lol. You "cant" do it with the 85L but you "can" haha. If the client wasn't my baby cousin I think they would be disappointed with 8 out of 60 shots ;) Almost non out of focus, just too far away and problems with composition become a factor the farther your subject gets...

After months of browsing this thread I finally pulled the trigger and got an 85L this weekend. Was it everything that I expected.......yes, but with a few speed bumps on the way.
It took me a fair bit of time to get the focus spot on. Mine was front focusing but that's easy to fix with the 5d2. The DOF is so paper thin that I was going crazy trying to get it perfect. I'm well aware of the learning curve and can't wait until I'm able to fully utilize this lens!
and of course I'll be submitting pictures to this thread in the near future :) not just yet

First real shot with the 85L. I already love it. I will miss my Sigma 50...but dang, completely different level with this monster. This is one of my dogs deep in concentration. I think she was hunting a fly. This thing is so sickeningly sharp even wide open. Shot at 1.2, some processing (and a slight crop).

Apart from weather sealing they couldn't do much to improve it, it's the first lens I pick up for most jobs and it's the perfect partner to the 85L :)

best solution would be the singh-ray vari-ND (2-8stops), expensive though but its worth it to me. before that, i had two separate filters, 3stop and 6stop. the variND is more convenient as you dont have to switch out filters. the filter is 77mm though so i had to get a 72 to 77mm step-up ring

I'm with you here. I've always bitten my lip as these lens sample threads are not supposed to be for critique, but you're definitely right in my opinion. Yes, 85mm at f/1.2 is a very narrow DOF, but that's not the end in itself, or if it is, then photography is nothing more than physics.

I haven't played around much with my keg but let me ask you guys that do... how are you able to recompose a shot without the lens continuously moving glass?
I seem to lock focus on a subject and once I attempt to recompose, it starts searching for another subject, grr.

Either keep th eshutter button half-pressed, or set the *-button to AF, rather than the shutter button. The latter is Custom Function IV-1.2 on the 5D Mk II, and you'll find it on all Canon dslrs if I am not mistaken. I've used it since the 350D. Of course, you need to switch AF mode to Single Shot as well, as Ai Focus or AI Servo will make the AF system hunt continuously.
Kind regards, Wim

If I were to shoot at f/2.2 or smaller, I'd save the $1400 and get the 85 1.8. The difference would be almost indistinguishable to the naked eye.

I know what you mean. A lot of the images in this thread are uninspired, but many of them are meant to be technical, so they deserve some latitude. For me, there's a signature shot for this lens, which is a headshot or head/shoulder shot, head lightly turned. A part of the face is sharp and emerges from the smoothest bokeh ever. The proximity is gently out of focus, like the body and garments, an eye and/or an ear, part of the hair. If I've seen it once I've seen it a couple dozen times, but I can't get enough. If there was a post with just the couple dozen images in it, I'd look at it over and over and over and over and over. I come back to this thread looking to see if someone's posted another portrait like that. Essentially the same pose, essentially the same photo. I just can't get enough. I've put that freakin' lens in the shopping cart on amazon or bhphoto or j&r at least a dozen times, and taken it out each time before checking out since I really can't afford it. But not today! Went through with the purchase just ten minutes ago BUT... not in stock! At least I locked in the $1707 price at Amazon before the rebate expires.

for me, its the full-body shots wide open (or close to it) that makes the subject seems like its popping from the background. i probably post this in this thread awhile back and not the best example but kinda like this :D
