Just got my 85L!!! Got off work a little early so I could catch the Fed Ex guy, but he never showed up. So I called and they said that he tried to deliver, even left a door tag... he did no such thing because I was sitting at the door like a dog waiting for the mailman and saw NO delivery truck at all! So, I had to drive and get it because I couldn't wait any longer.
I don't have time to go and shoot something better, but this is a covert purchase... the gf is still reeling after the 70-200mm 2.8L I bought a few weeks back, so the 85L stays on the down low! After only about 10 snaps, it is obvious that his lens is something magical. I can't WAIT to use it more!
Here is my first shot with the 85L. Hard telling what those blue blurbs are in the background... I think The Keg caused a rift in the space/time continuum.

I was mostly joking with you. I think 1.0.7 did fix the "black dot" phenomenon which was a big deal to a lot of people. The newest firmware is 1.1.0 which allows manual exposure for videos. I haven't heard of anyone complain that their 5D was worse after the updates. I've had no issues doing the updates on mine.
phamster
24th of June 2009 (Wed), 22:13
yea i am not going to up date the firmware, things are clicking so... leave it alone..
i dont shoot videos.. so the update isn't that important to me..
now if the update gets me iso 25 that would help me out..
with the 85L and @ F2.0 i am at my shutter sync speed of 200..
i need to get some ND filters.. badly..
not a problem flashram..

Tried it this night and i was so surprised about the fact that shots looks like to be taken in daylight !
Otherwise, i found my copy very low to focus. Is it possible to be a mk1 version that looks like an mk2 one ?
When does mk2 was introduced ? The serial number (UU code) is not sealed, it is just "written" on the lens !

OH Yea.. forgot to do that..
there is a learing curve.. i really think 1.8 is too thin of DOF for good protraits up close..
also full body shots. 1.8 is good though..
i just love the results...so far, i haven't done enough yet.. but i am sure i don't want to remove the lens from the body..
also what i like is.. in the view finder vs seeing the subject not thru the view finder it is almost exactly alike.. so it is easy to know where to stand and frame a person.. cool.. i didn't know that going into owning one..
the thing is so fat and weights a ton.. cool.. i am an equipment fanitic but also know good equipment can help a photographer out..
i just hope i can come up with stuff that is worthy of my new precious !! he he..

According to the information here: http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/lens/ef/data/standard/2006_ef_85_f1.2lII_usm.html , the Mark II was introduced in March 2006.

Yeah 85mm on full frame is close to what you "see" with the eye.
70mm on FF is almost identical to what you "see" with your eye through the viewfinder. I like shooting my 24-70 @ 70. It's fun. :)

Shot this last weekend. Its been awhile since I tried using the 85L to shoot full body. Somehow the effect is even more pronounced when the subject is in focus and everything else takes on a gradual blur.
Sunlight from the sun setting off to the right behind her. Used a fill in flash on my right about 8 feet in front of her on a light stand.

From my first set of shots. 85mm 1.2 L II arrived from BHPhoto a few minutes ago.
Canon 5DM2. These two shots are 50 percent crops, then resized. No postprocessing except for jpg conversion.
The first is f1.2, 1/640s, 0.0Ev, handheld, 100 ISO. The leaf is not completely level, of course. Ooohh--no usm!
The second is f16, 1/60s, 0.0 Ev, handheld, ISO 1600 (the light was falling fast). If it is a titch soft, it's due to being in my unsteady hands.

Here's the full frame f1.2 shot at closest focus, about .95 meter.
Then the sliver of in focus plane at 100 percent and rotated for your viewing pleasure.
No PP, no USM.

My two favorite models, the grandgirls. ISO 100. Canon 5DM2, 85mm f1.2 L II, Program mode--1/64s @ f3.2. The first image is fully massaged in Photoshop, including the smartsharpen option. The 100 percent crop is process in ACDSee Pro 2.5 and is not sharpened so you can see the quality of this lens and camera combination.

I hope this isn't overkill. Individual poses of the girls.
Almond-eyed brunette 1/250s @ 3.2, Program, ISO 100.
Blue-eyed blonde 1/400s @ f3.2.
Even at 3.2 from closer the DOF is thin.

Except where it isn't. That's one of the wonders of it. Where it isn't sharp, it's usually very prettily bokeh'd.

i prefer the black and white, for some reason the white on the side of the barn looks so much better in BW and the whole thing jumps out more..... for some reason I think the eye has a better ability to distinguish the contrasts and details of the black and white ...
having said that I really like the golden "glimmer" on the colour one.....

Geno, every time I do an HDR I tend to like the B+W version better. Something about the colors never looks right after the processing, but the B+Ws have so much pop to them. This one is no different, and I dig the aspect ratio you used!

Just picked up this magnificent piece of glass!!! How are you guys controlling CA?
PF, not strictly pure CA, can be controlled by stopping down a little, and longitudinal CAs, i.e. dark magenta fringes in the foreground OOF zone and greenish fringes in the background OOF zone also by stopping down a bit.
PF is apparent at very high contrast transitions, but only occurs generally in harsh lighting at large apertures. LoCas, which are a by-effect of the spherical aberrations that make the bokeh of this lens so smooth, are generally not disturbing.
Kind regards, Wim
