Taken from recently acquired Mark I version of the 85L (lens purchased from blonde) When used with the Mark III, the focus speed is very reasonable. Photo is of the boss, she wasn't particulary thrilled with me taking her outside for a quick picture.

Congratulations on your new 85L! I'm sure you are loving it. I've had mine for about a month now and it has yet to come off my camera! I guess you could say that I've left my other lenses "High and Dry". (kudos for the Radiohead pun?) :D
Oh, and almost forgot: That's a really great shot... She's absolutely adorable!

Autoportrait at 1.2. This lens is amazing. I have previously owned the 35L but this takes the top. The Af is slower then normal L series lens but it is worth it to capture such a sharp image.
This is a rental but might become a regular.

Wow... AMAZING! That shot is seriously bad-a**.
How did you get the snow in focus coming towards you but have such a great background blur? Could you share the settings? (Specifically aperture) and any PP? :D

I've shot with all three... They are all exceptional, but trust me... Using (and now owning) the 85L is, by-far, my most fun and rewarding photography experience to date. :D
I'm not kidding, and I know others will back me up, when I say that this lens, wide open, is truly magic! And by magic I mean...
- Set camera to aperture priority
- Open it up to 1.2
- Give camera to monkey (in a padded room of course - we don't want to hurt the lens :D )
- Wait 30 minutes
- Get camera back from monkey
- Plug in memory card reader
- Enjoy
Because even from a monkey in a padded room you are still gonna have interesting, and useable shots. Promise! :D

Lol I see where you are coming from however of all my lenses, I have found the 85mm the most difficult to master but equally the most rewarding... then again I do like to chimp a lot.

Do you mind me asking when these were taken? If you have more from Italy that you took with this lens, I'd love to see some more. Also, I'm curious to know what lenses you took to Italy.
Lastly, did you expose the above photos a bit on the dark side on purpose?

Wow... AMAZING! That shot is seriously bad-a**.
How did you get the snow in focus coming towards you but have such a great background blur? Could you share the settings? (Specifically aperture) and any PP? :D
Agreed this is a wicked shot. I'm also curious to know what PP you did.

I have a Venice set of pictures on my Flickr under Travel. The harsh lighting meant it was difficult to expose a scene without easily blowing the highlights so I ended up underexposing and selectively correcting the exposure.
Lens wise - I took the 16-35, 85, 70-200, 24-105

Got one last week - here's my first shot with it at about 6PM on the east coast with an XTi. It was starting to get dark out but the lens didn't seem to mind. There were leaves in the background but the aperture obliterated them.

After I saw this thread I decided to buy this lens.
My first choice was to go with the 50 1.4 and the 580EX II but seeing the pictures and planning on buying the 5D update once it`s out I decided to go with this lens instead.
The rebates and the CAD vs. US was also one of the big reasons.
I bought the 85L, 580EX II, B+W B + W 72mm UV Haze 010 (MRC) and the Sto-Fen Omni-bounce for $1,935 CAD including shipping. Will probably end up paying about $240 for taxes but still a great deal. The 85L alone would have cost me $2165 CAD had I bought it locally.

Ah yes, another thread that led to no good. I no longer dislike the 70-200mm f2.8 IS thread because I have since picked up the lens.
Likewise I will probably hold less animosity for this thread after I scrape enough pennies together and grab an 85L.
And all because of this damnable thread.

The only PP was a little cropping, 10% saturation since it loses a little when saved for the web and sharpened at 120, .3 , 5. thats it.

Well, #3 might be overexposed, yeah -- I was mainy posting that to show how the lens caught "the moment"...

At least #3, it was set to AV, and the shutter speed maxed out at 1/8000 :)

Note that I was tracking the ducks here, guys, not exposing for the background:)! The ducks were flying through areas of shadow and sunlight, so I'm extremely happy that the lens caught the ducks and the camera got good exposure for the ducks!
If I wanted to do some serious PP-ing on this pic, maybe I'd tone down the bg and blur it a bit, but for now I have other pics to take...:)

Oh yes, I was not complaining at all :) A lot of people are saying that the AF of this lens is very slow, but it seemed to work well in this shot. Well done!

One thing I noticed about this lens is that it's easy to lose focus at 1.2 if you don't have steady hands in low light shooting. But once you stop down to 1.4-2.0 it's sharp as hell.
airfrogusmc
6th of January 2008 (Sun), 02:17
If you notice the only thing sharp is her left eye. Its what I focused on. Ya stop down a bit and its about as good as it gets.

This is my first post on the forum... so... hi.
I went on an aide trip to India last year and knew I'd be taking a ton of pictures, so I decided to rent the 85L II. (from lensprotogo.com)
I was blown away with the image quality my Rebel XT was capable of with a quality lens on the front!!!! I got hooked... and... just bought my own about two weeks ago (along with the 40d). I promise, if you are thinking about getting this lens, you will definitely NOT be disappointed!
All were taken handheld, with available light, and all but the last were taken wide open (f1.2). The last pic I stopped down to f2.8.
A beautiful collection... In fact, your photos were a big reason for me to buy the 85mm f/1.2L II, you produced the bokeh I wanted  ;-)

I was thinking "Lens porn" myself, but refrained from using that term. I'm glad you threw the term out there and tested the waters. ;)
Wow, Sun that's a heck of a piece of glass!! That is a great demonstration!
My wife was asking me what I was doing. I had the light tent set up with my two umbrellas, etc.
I told her I was taking a picture of the lens and when she asked me why, I couldn't really answer so I'm glad you guys appreciate those shots. I've been using this lens at all our parties over the holidays and just love the shots that come from it, but I can't stop looking at the lens itself...it's just one sexy lens.
PS: For all you lens-porn guys, this is one lens that actually looks nicer without the hood on. I know...I know....it's just a tool, but heck, some power tools are pretty cool too.
Wow. I can't believe you can see right through it! Awesome.
Those are some sweet pictures, and the lens looks really cool as well. I like how you can pretty much see straight through it..
One of the things that blow me away is how you can look right through the lens. I had some relatives ask me over the holidays why it was more expensive than the big white lens. When I held it up and told them to look through it, and explained how much light that sucker takes in, they kind of understood. It's pretty cool...when you have it mounted on your body, you can see the mirror/sensor. It is one heavy hunk of glass though.

Wow, excellent shots of the lens. I think it looks better without the hood too, but if I bought one, I don't know if I'd have the balls to go shooting with no hood with all that glass hanging out!
