Some times it can be a bit too shallow, and a little creepy. But, this shot grew on me.

ISO-3200, f/1.2, 1/60th Uncropped. The 100% crop is LR defaults, -.58 exp, no NR or sharpening. Probably a bit soft due to motion blur(me and the cat.)
Love this lens, really need to use it more.

Amazing swirl bokeh. This lens and the 135L really have a pronounced swirl effect.

Edit: I just looked up what causes this and apparently lots of lens do. I guess the pronounced effect in your picture is a product of you picking out the perfect spot to exhibit the effect :D (a bit of foreground and lots of background foliage).

From my experience, the 85L is really mild in that effect. The 35 gives a much more artistic bokeh.

This is a 100% crop from my brand new 85/1.2, shot wide open ISO100 1/4000s. I'd been reading about CA but didn't appreciate how pronounced it could be. All the spots are black of course, and the color range is amazing. If it weren't so disconcerting it would be pretty cool. Is this sort of thing correctable in PP?

I'd say that's what you'd expect from an F1.2 lens, but I could be wrong.. This lens obviously isn't going to perform perfect at the max aperture. I think that you could minimize it by reducing color on the area of the fringing. I'm pretty sure that all lenses do that in high contrast situations, especially wide open.

This is caused by Longitudinal CA or spherochromatism or bokeh CA (3 names for the same thing), and is normally not fixable in PP. You could try with DPP, to see if that correct sit at least partially. DxO does fix this partially too.

Personally, I find it quite charming, but then, most of the time it is not this pronounced, and it disappears when stopping down . An advantage i sthat you can see whether the camera/lensackfocuses o rnot; the correctly coloured part is where the lens focused, the OOF foreground high contrast edges in purple/dark red, and the OOF background ones in a greenish cast :D.

Kind regards, Wim

my situation is as follows... I can probably make a nice deal on a used EF 85mm 1.2 L mark 1.. but I know the AF on the mark 2 is almost twice as fast!

Now I have a 5D classic and the AF on the 5D isn't fast either... so I was wondering..

will the slow AF of the 5D and the slow AF on th 85 L mark 1 make the AF in general slower? or is it as with slow CF cards? no reason for putting very fast CF cards in an old 5D cause the camera can't make use of those blazing speeds..

So in short.. would the old 5D benefit from the faster af on the mark 2? I guess it would..

Also the reason I want to get this lens is simple: concert photography! sometimes ISO3200 and f2.8 ain't enough. I could solve this by getting a new camera, but this will only help me by 1 or 2 stops max! and to be honest. the 5Dmark2 has better ISO but not 2 stops over the 5D. and the lower the ISO the better ;)

the 85 1.2 would give me 2.5 stops advantage over my 2.8 zooms. So I'm sure this would give me better pictures. this means ISO800 instead of ISO4800! (this number I can't even reach)

So my question is would you spend the money on a new body so you would gain like 1.5 stops in usable ISO on all lenses (but we all know in a year there will be even a better body) or should I spend it on the 85 1.2 L mark 1? (I can't and won't buy the two at once)

will the slow AF of the 5D and the slow AF on th 85 L mark 1 make the AF in general slower? or is it as with slow CF cards? no reason for putting very fast CF cards in an old 5D cause the camera can't make use of those blazing speeds..

The difference in focus speed with an 85L Mk I on any body is determined for 99 % by the lens, and if you know what you are doing, you can actually use it for sports photography. The focus speed improvement with teh 85L II is a factor 1.8 only, which still makes it slow at focusing. IOW, the focusing speed difference from body to body with the 85L is not all that different, and the focusing speed difference between 85L and 85L II is not significant. It still is quite slow, but faster and more accurate than me having a go at MF.

Whether you should rather upgrade to the 5D II, that's a difficult decision. I already had the 85L when going from 5D to 5D II, but I do know that it is not just the 2 stop iso advantage. It has another leap of magic, over the 5D, just like the 5D has over the xxD cameras. And besides that it has quite a bunch of new features, that make it very attractive too. I am afraid you have to decide for yourself what is more important :D.

Kind regards, Wim

in fact i have, i have been a part of the development of this ride.. (co development with Fuji back in japan.. we both SIA and mother Subaru launched this at the same time) normally Japan launches it for a year, then we get to make here in Lafayette, Indiana.

it will only come in as a GT with 6 speeds manual only.. pretty cool eh? roomy and fast..

the turbo is on the bottom side of the engine.. Harmon Kardon sound system.. good if you don't completely crank it..

the car does look great.. and it is the first Legacy with door sashes.. "with window frames on the door" and should provide a much better sound dampening than other designs..

Hehe...not yet.

My wife and I are planning a trip to Atlanta, Columbus Day weekend. I've spoken to a few people in the 5D thread (not the 5d2). We will all be working with some models, just for fun, do a meet and greet, and possibly something else? I'd advise against children and family members though...no offense. Models 'will' be at this event.

Once I have my bearings straight, and am able to plan such an event with the help of other POTN folk, a thread will be created. It'll be fun, though, I can promise you that. :)

Since you have the inside scoop, what can you tell me about the 2010 STi???? :) I LOVE the hatch back style of the current 09's, but before I buy I want to know what the 2010's are going to offer. Heck, the current Impreza WRX has a better 0-60! So Subaru is definitely going to upgrade the STi... right?

yep..

there will be a sedan - super sharp looking - 3.6R sedan.. also there is going to be a CVT version tranny.. i have to look at my spec book.. but i think the CVT's will be offered in the 3.6R versions..

i can get "friends and family discounts.." it will be %2 below invoice.. it was available last year.. any model and any dealer. just not the STI versions..

let me check tomorrow.. and i will give status if it is still on..

no.. they will not upgrade for better 0-60.. that comparison is just not right.

straight line 0-60 with a 5 speed vs STI 6 speed is just a skewed stat.

the wrx has a weak tranny compared to the STI's tranny.. made to be abused.. cryogenically treated gears of the STI is bullit proof..

but here is what you should look at:

STI brakes , DDC, HID lights, higher grade seats, better wheels, 6 speed tranny, better VF series turbo, better short block, higher performance.. and on and on..

but really the difference is the ability to just kick in the speed from a 20 mile roll and keep up or blow away about any vehicle barring AMG's and super cars.. other cars will have a hard time keeping rubber to the road.. they just fish tail..

i have had a cobb stage 3, dual alcohol injection system, @ 7 psi and 2nd @13PSI, - i was tuned to 20PSI by a master tuner in chicago.. sweet ride..

sold it now.. and i some times miss it badly..

i will have to talk to the SRD guys, they sit just about 20 feet from me.. SUBARU RESEARCH AND DESIGN group.. they are all Japanese and they work like 12-14 hours a day.. crazy !!

STi's are beasts! I really need something more practical, and the STi is on the top of my list (right below it being the Evo X). I currently have an '07 350Z, which I love, but in the winter she is tremendously terrible. And I can't carry anything more than my feather weight girlfriend!

Well, I just looked up the iwsti.com News and Rumors, and they said the 2010 STi is only getting some interior changes, but nothing to the engine in terms of power boost. Hmmm... maybe I can score an '09 for mega deal now?
