Went to a dinner-show a few days ago here in Beijing. For part of the show, there was a performer doing a tradition Chinese "face changing" act. Basically, he changes his painted face masks to different colors in front of the audience while effectively hiding each change, much as magicians would do. I was standing to the side of the stage taking pictures (lucky enough to be allowed to stand right at the edge of the stage). At one point, I saw him sucking through a long tube hidden on the sleeve of his costume while turned away from the audience. Smelling the gas, I prepared myself for what I thought was coming. I don't remember taking the picture of him spitting the fire; but I was following him as he danced around for maybe 20 seconds after sucking the fuel into his mouth, pumping the focus to keep him in focus, and holding the shutter half-down. Once the fire came out (toward me), it startled me enough that I pushed the shutter at the right moment. Sometime you get lucky...

These are unprocessed besides the second one being cropped a little.

How did that happen (if I may ask)?

We were bowling at Hard Rock Café in Gothenburg and had our bags and stuff behind us on the bench and among them was my camera. I took some pictures of our family and was having a great time. Suddenly when i was getting my camera to take pictures of my stepsisters daughter i noticed that the camera is not there anymore.

We're quite certain we know who took the camera. We have pictures of them, we know they paid with a bank card and so on, but the local police didn't really understand that it's not about a 200e p&s camera so they were seriously just slacking around with the issue. We had to leave the country on Sunday so we had to leave the issue to my sister who lives there.

I'm not sure if it will sort out. Hope so, because it's the best lens i've ever used. :(

Don't get me wrong the 85L is great and I love mine but the 200 2L is a step up. No C/A to speak of and with IS well I can hand hold a 200 at 1/15 of sec I mean that incredible.

Yeah, I'm sure it's real nice...but, one needs to be making a living off of their 'job/hobby' in order to warrant the purchase. Unless, of course, someone just has money to spend on it. Most people really 'think' long and hard about purchasing this lens...and an average person probably wouldn't think of either or.

I'd sure love one...but, for now, I'll have to grow my bank account for a while...hehe.

Driving down the street in the evening. Ambient street light. For some reason I shot this with the Canon 1DM3 and 85L II. Just a grab--thinking I would see how it handles the exterior and interior lights.

ISO 400, Program 1/125s @ f1.6. Some post-process in CS4 for contrast and saturation, modest USM. That white line the length of the red trim is where the paint overlapped, not USM effect.

In the second one, watch out for the CA. You can see the green/teal CA in the back behind the bride and the red/purple fringe in front of her along the pews (camera right). that's one of the downfalls of this lens and shooting wide open or near wide open. but i really like this shot. i may have to try this. :)

did you use a softbox'ed light in the front?

It was all done with natural light. The specific picture you mentioned is using the sun (around 6pm) as back light with a wide aperture so the sun almost acts as a hair light.

I used a reflector in some shots to catch more light on her face but it was too harsh so I left it bare letting the wide aperture of the lens do it's magic.

Beautiful...Just beautiful and I agree with your focus comments. This lens works great and focuses great. Different than the zooms most might be used to and 5D or a 5DII are both killer cameras and I get great shots everyday with my 5Ds. I never miss shots. Its like any gear, you need to spend some time with it to learn how to use it properly. Most just want to pick it up and rock and roll.

I'm just using available light, moving the model to where's good, no reflectors either. I've tried the stobie stuff and it just doesn't work for me....not that I'm dissing it. I LOVE some of the strobie stuff that's on here. It's just a technique that's lost on me. I stick to what works for me and that's one of my mottos in life.

I'm like you, but just the opposite. I like to use strobes on location, or in studio. This way, I know I won't have any limitations, especially here in Florida. It's Sunny, and next thing you know, it's a grey day, and back to Sunny again.

Though, I know the power of the 85...and as such I should use it more with natural light. ;) In time, I suppose. There's always a learning curve for one thing, or another.

Thanks for the info.

It's definately a lens for the shade, even in medium sunlight I find that I bounce off the 1/8000th sec max shutter speed of the 5DII at 100 ISO. This is a seriously bright lens. It's about 5x brighter than f2.8 glass. I have used a polariser in a few instances where I needed to use the f1.2 in bright conditions. I'm thinking of sourcing a good Neutral Density 3 stop filter...one with NO colour casts.

I need to think of that -- using an ND or a CPL with this lens. That's one of those things that always slips my mind until later, but it really may help in some situations.

I have a 10 stop B+W and a 9 stop Hoya (for still water looks) and the Hoya has less of a colour cast. But neither is what I'd call neutral. I'm thinking of selling my 3 stop, 9 stop and 10 stop and just investing in a Singh Ray vari-ND.
It's expensive and a bit big...but it might worth the reduction in filters, plus I get functionality out of it.

inthedeck
18th of August 2009 (Tue), 20:20
Yeap, I thought along the same lines for a bit. While it'll be a cool filter to own, maybe down the road I'll invest in one. For now, either the 85 or the 135 will share this one until it's permanent that both get one. :)

Does using/applying the correct WB parameters not help with the color casts?

Oh, and cute kid, there, Dennis. :)

i highly recommend the singh-ray vari-ND! .. you can easily go from shooting natural light to strobes with a twist of the filter :D .. since you're limited to 1/200s sync speed, the vari-ND makes it easy to adjust depending on how much DOF (or lack there of) you want in the photo.

for example: taken around 1-2pm, high sun, harsh lighting and no shade .. @ f2, 1/200, iso100 .. single bare speedlight to camera left (with 1/2 CTO gel)

Thanks folks. The images were taken here in Portland, Oregon. With Intel being located here there is a rather sizeable Indian population. My wife being one of them is originally from Andhra Pradesh, South India. The young lady (9yrs) is the daughter of some very close friends of ours. The mother was a dancer, her big sis is amazing dancer who did her premiere three hour solo performance just after she turned 13 years.

Amazing family originally from Tamil Nadu, South India, the grandfather was the former UN representative for India.

Geno.. you are right.. i will bring up just slightly.. and not too much.. because the focus is really on the married couple and the concept of the photo is just the bridel party as a support group.. fill in good looks only.. right?
