Well... I was thinking in setting the f/1.2 first to get the *magical POP* out of the lens! Even in ISO 100 I think the shutter will be way too fast!
Sure at f/1.2 you have to pay attention to your lighting, and with real bright light your fastest shutter speed may not be fast enough and an ND filter or even a polarizer might be handy, but I've tackled outdoor situations with and without sun and done OK -- you just have to be careful with your exposures. The same holds with pretty much any setting, though, not just with f/1.2.
Just as an example, I just came across this shot, taken at f/1.2, ISO 100, 1/8000 in bright sunlight with no filter, one of many such shots:

yes but very often 1/8000 is not fast enough at F1.2!

Maybe it's my eyes, maybe it's the extremely shallow DOF @ f1.2, but to me most of the portraits in this post appear "soft" or at least don't "POP" like you would think pictures from a lens of this quality/price would.
Some of the non portrait pics, like the two latest ones by Airbutchie are nice and clear and sharp, and even "POP", but most of the portraits seem rather "soft" or even "dull". Even the colours aren't VIBRANT it seems.
Just an observation. If I owned this lens esp for portraits, I'd want them to be RAZOR sharp, and have the "model" seem to JUMP off the screen as if in 3-D. I'd want the viewer to think OMFG that lens is SHARRRRRRRP!!!!
echo
21st of September 2009 (Mon), 18:06
Maybe I've got a super sharp version, I've mentioned before that mine wastes 135L's I've tried but the 85L is the sharpest lens that I own by some margin.
I reckon the effect you mean is that close up and wide open an eye will be in focus while the tip of the nose and the ears will be OOF. That can't make an image pop. I find the 85L has to be used a few paces back wide open or it needs stopping down for portraits to get all in focus (due to the DOF and not the IQ!).
I much prefer to mate the 85L up with a 1.3 crop such as the 1DmkIII as it just seems to work better than on FF which is why I'm not using mine so much after selling the 1D and waiting for the mkIV or whatever.

As a follow up about the sharpness here's a 'snap' (IE, a snap) taken at f/2.8. In focus areas are very sharp (I don't re-sharpen to upload which I probably should) but you can see how thin the DOF is even at f/2.8.
http://recordproduction.smugmug.com/photos/641381122_8tq9d-XL.jpg
At that distance I'd guess f/8 or so is needed?
I'm kind of getting bored with micro DOF myself...
:)

Cute kid, echo, and a pretty effective f/2.8 shot. But I agree, we don't need to be bound to narrow DOF shots just because we can take them. I often prefer something like f/4 or f/5.6 for close portraits because I don't necessarily want the ultra-narrow DOF, but really it's an on-the-fly decision and I often "bracket".
So, I try for different results.
Here's a shot of my grandson taken a couple years ago at f/1.2 that didn't turn out bad -- I don't know, though, that I'd prefer it over say f/4 except for the extreme subject isolation:
http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/image/88876493/original.jpg
Here's an f/1.2 shot that seemed to come out pretty well except for softness of the nose, which I tend to not prefer:
http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/image/89001332/original.jpg
Shot at f/2.8 seemed to come out a bit better:

Oh I love the "separation" that the subject gets from the background with such narrow DOF, and the 1.2 max aperture. And even with such shallow DOF the subject can still STAND OUT, such as in the pics that Tony just posted.
I guess it all depends on how critical the focusing is. (For example, in the close up of the little girl that Echo posted, the parts that are in focus ARE very SHARP, which does make the image stand out, or even "POP" partially)
Also, that last pic is INCREDIBLE echo. Maybe not the most "glamorous" picture, but the sharpness, "POP", colours, and bokeh are just amazing! Now THAT is how I would want my $2,000+ lens to produce!! (Must be because of the 1D Mark III;) )
Again, I wasn't implying that the lens IS "soft". Just that it would be nice to see more images with I guess greater DOF, or at least more VIBRANCY, SHARPNESS, and "POP". Not only to the colours, but to the actual subject, even if shot in B&W.
Or even if using the max aperture, what IS in focus, should be so RAZOR SHARP that the viewer's eyes begin to bleed because they've been "cut".
But I think Echo and Tony have it bang on...this lens seems to be at it's "ULTIMATE" when stopped down a few stops. The pics I've seen where it has been OBVIOUSLY stopped down are simply FREAKIN' INCREDIBLE! Almost 3-D in appearance!
Of course there are times when f1.2 IS the PERFECT aperture to use. I guess it depends on the subject and the effect the photographer is going for. But for portraits I think stopping down seems to produce "nicer" looking images. Again JMHO.

Getting back to the right distance lets you use f/1.2 to great effect but that usually also means having the subject a good distance in front of background objects, well in my experience it does. I suppose it's all to do with selecting the right aperture for the distance.
The problem is that as it's such a fast lens it can be too easy to forget that f/5.6 etc is still available and here the lens isn't just outstanding it's breathtaking :D
I am finding that in normal sized rooms there's not enough space to get the most out of the 85L, larger rooms or events etc are great though. I think that's why the 35L is such a good partner to it :)

So, I sold my 85 f/1.8 some time ago because I felt that the MFD was intrusive. I rented the 85L last week for a little event, and was pleased (and my wallet was a little scared) that I didn't bump my head on the MFD... and then I look up the specs and it turns out that the 85L actually has a LONGER MFD than the /1.8...
Oh, the confusion.
Maybe the magic dust of the 85L prevents me from being displeased with it?! :D

True about the MFD -- this lens does great head and shoulder shots, but it isn't a macro!
People mention the 35L -- sound like a great lens. I'll say that I'm not hooked on primes and that my favorite up-close portrait lens is the 24-70 -- great MFD!

You can get close with the 35L, but I don't typically like to get closer than head & shoulders in landscape orientation - you gotta be aware of potential distortion after that. No such worries with the 85!

yeah i saw that one thread about the different perspectives caused by the focal lengths and i was quite surprised to see that there is a bit of distortion even at 35. I know there is at 24 on FF but surprised to see so much at 35.

I miss my 24-70L and was even thinking of selling my 24-105L and 85L and getting another (more suited to my work in lower light) but the 85L is so spectacular...

That set shows off a really awesome chemistry between those two. Wow.

Yeah I was the staff photographer at a hospital for 10 years so hospital work is 80% of my business. Annual reports, environmental portraits, surgical procedures, formal portraits, photographs for all kinds of advertising, bill boards, brochures, events and golf outings and anything else health care related.

Nice! Great to see some landscape shots in this thread; too many portraits. From the impression I get from this thread, it is usually only a portrait lens. I find it awesome, awesome, awesome for landscape/environmental shots. :)

oh no... please i beg you guys... don't post anymore. I've never seen such crazy IQ this lens can produce... Aside from different FL prime, is this the best in creating these crazy images? How's the 50mm 1.2, 35 1.4, 24 1.4, 135L 2.0, 200 f/2.8 compared to this?

hands down this is the best portraiture lens due to its super shallow depth of field and super creamy bokeh it creates.

Heh! Yeah, it would have to be if it's gonna outdo the "Classic"! For now, I'm hiding my eyes and stopping my ears. I can still get plenty mileage out of my 100 when I want to shoot macro, and I typically don't use it for other types of shooting so the IS may not be a big advantage to me...
