Great shots!!
How far back were you?
I was trying to shoot a basketball game the other day and the only action worth capturing (due to 85 1.8 being a tad long) was when the teams played on the opposite court from where I was sitting.

I stand at any of the four corners of the basketball court and shoot inwards; you may be having more trouble than with focal length if you're shooting with a 1.6 crop, as i was shooting with a 1.3 crop...
good luck!

Huh? I've shot a lot of basketball with the 40D and 85 f/1.8. I shoot from about 8 feet behind the baseline under the basket or off to the side. The action has to be inside the 3 pt circle or it's too far out.
I can't imagine what sort of shots you were trying to capture that required you to be across the court with the 85 f/1.8.

i had flash compensation - 1
the dual lights into umbrella was just out of frame..
shooting mode was manual.. the flash units was on ettl...
the sun light was the hair light.. and composition is: i always find a darkish area for the contrast for the subject and background..
in this case it was the subjects dark clothes and the lighter blurred back ground that worked for me.

Shooting in these type situations can be very challenging. You can't go far into a room with a camera where theres an MRI and you've got maybe 5 minutes to shoot because there patients waiting and the Dr has to get back to seeing patients. All that said I love being able to work in those type of situations and still get the image the client needs.

Then its up to you the photographer to find the best light to position your subject in and still get the shot. A half ft farther back and his eyes are black and the same if you get him under the spot thats about another foot or so farther forward.

^^I do agree. For every situation, there is a counter-situation. Lights in and of themselves are hard, but, using ambient to get the best shots in low light is an even bigger challenge. I appreciate both. :)
And here's one, where balancing everything was in and of itself something challenging. :)
BTW, I'm open to critiques, always. :)

Nice job.
Indeed it is. Nice to see an image from the "keg" that wasn't taken at f/1.2 (presumably) so it actually has some DOF, and has more in focus than just a person's eyes. It really shows how freakin' SHARP that lens truly is!
Shallow DOF is nice at times, or when used for effect, but at least to me NOT IN EVERY FREAKIN' PICTURE.
Great capture!

i totally agree..
the 1.2 was just like the first 2 or 7 days.. and then i wore off for me..
i shoot mainly what the ambient and composition gives me.. but anything above 3.5 is super sharp.. i am amazed..
my 5dmkii and this is the best combo.. my other 5dmkii and 35L combo isn't as sharp... but sharp enough..
i am just worried as many photo shoots i do am going to burn this shutter on my 85L combo body and then when i send it in.. and when it comes back it won't be the same..
holding my breath.. don't even know how to check shutter count on the 5dmkii.. anybody? i guess i can google it..

I just spent the last couple of weeks shooting tabletop product shots and half of them were shot with the 85L and the other half with a 24-70L. I was planning to buy the new macro but had to get shooting so I used extension tubes when I needed to get closer and I'm seriously considering not getting the macro. Up till now the85L has become my people portrait lens and I do love the shallow depth of field but this lens is absolute as a product lens as well, I worked with it up through f 11.

Maybe a crop just above the heads and loose the white fence in the left part of the frame.
Then nothing competes with the subjects (like anything was anyway ) but I also think a tighter crop works better.

great pics in this thread! I'm not quite sure yet if I wanna get the 50 L or 85 L..
if they both were the same price I d probably get the 85L because of the better bokeh. and the fact that the 85L doesn't have focus shift issues.
main use would be concerts. sometimes I shoot at concerts where f 2.8 iso 3200 and 1/60 is still 2 stops underexposed!
with the 85L I would be able to shoot at 1/80 ISO3200 f/1.2 and get good exposed shots!
Problem with the 85L is the long MFD.. and maybe the slower AF?
Can someone help me?? ;)

well, if youre shooting concerts i dont think MFD is an issue is it?
AF is fine with a decent body even in low light. Of course the flash helps alot for AF too if youre allowed to use it, or just turn the flash off but use it to assist AF

Quite the learning curve, indeed.
In this situation I was literally at someone else's table just to achieve MFD. I'm not sure they appreciated that... (a very crowded coffee house on a saturday night)
But yes, I should have stopped it down a bit. Its just, f1.2 is quite addicting.

a friend asked me to take some baby pictures for him, my first time shooting newborns. most of the shots came out quite well, much thanks to the 85...
i had seen this neat b&w shot online of a baby held in her mothers arms against a black background and tried to emulate that.
a very quick and crudely done attempt using a lamp and a black shirt, we tried to get the shot before she woke up. Because of this, I didn't notice her foot had slipped out of the frame until it was too late
I think it still came out quite nice, and he was pleased with the result.
What do you all think?

Sweet baby and I like this setup (I have a similar one in my galleries) but I think your black and white conversion is muddy and too contrasty & dark for a newborn. If you post the original maybe someone can offer a better conversion.

Thanks! I'll try converting it again.
I suppose I should exploit the perfect skin rather than trying to cover it up with dark contrast.
I had done a different version, highly desaturated with just some flesh colors left, I now think that one may have looked better. Definitely less 'muddy'.
