Fantastic! Love to know what magical pp you did on these. All natural lighting?

Thanks :)

All natural lighting. No PhotoShop at all, just opened with Capture One (my favourite), pushed the saturation a tad, slight adjustment to curves and standard sharpness then exported as a jpeg. Capture One is now my first choice over LR etc as it pulls more detail out - to my eyes anyway!

PS. Should add that I know that spot and like the light there at certain times so I think that's what makes it :)

Is this lens considered one of the most essential to have for general portrait work? If not, which would you recommend?

Thanks,

:) this picture butiful ilove a lot a friend asked me to take some baby pictures for him, my first time shooting newborns. most of the shots came out quite well, much thanks to the 85...
i had seen this neat b&w shot online of a baby held in her mothers arms against a black background and tried to emulate that.

a very quick and crudely done attempt using a lamp and a black shirt, we tried to get the shot before she woke up. Because of this, I didn't notice her foot had slipped out of the frame until it was too late

I think it still came out quite nice, and he was pleased with the result.
What do you all think?

She turned one month old today

It's the photographers because they are serious in their work. Not many amateurs who are new to photography would purchase the 1.2L. So yes skill level plays a significant role in this comparison.

Chao anh Pham, how do I achieve a similar skill level in photography like yours? I already have one requirement met which is I am also Vietnamese xD. Kidding aside, but yes, I have recently become very interested and involved with photography. It's actually becoming an obsession right now. I really want to expand my photography to the next level. When you and other professional photographers started out, what were the steps taken? Any classes or lessons in photography? Kidding aside, but yes, I have recently become very interested and involved with photography. It's actually becoming an obsession right now. I really want to expand my photography to the next level. When you and other professional photographers started out, what were the steps taken? Any classes or lessons in photography? I learn most of my stuff from doing researches and by performing trials and errors. I wonder if what I am doing combined with my own creativity would be sufficient for expanding my photography skills.

lets see here how i think it should be done

1. learn your equipment.. how to control everything on the creative modes.. Manual for sure.. manual camera, manual off camera lighting..

2. understand how light affects the sensor and how to manipulate light in camera not photoshop..

3. get subjects to practice with, i had to do many free sessions for experiences... you will make mistakes,, but with mistakes, come learning and countermeasures..

on any good photo..
ask why was it good and can you duplicate that again, in any setting and with any client

on any bad photo
ask why was it bad, and what would you do to correct it next time.. expand on the mistake to all aspects of your photography.. ( i had so many more bad stuff than good, but that help me get better faster)

4. post here on POTN and get feedback.. even if they rip you down.. take it subjectively..

5. let your passion take you to the next level... don't think of it as money.. ( i still haven't thought this photography journey of mine as a business, i think of it as a hobbie still, this is my 1 1/2 years into it and still loving it.) once it becomes a job, then it might become not as fun and the quality is gone too..

6. Push yourself to the limits..do it for you first, and your clients will love it.. (i always try to get a jaw dropping photo in every session, first for me, for my portfolio, and if i can make my self happy, then more than likely the client will be head over heels too.)

7. learn post processing.. web compression, how to control layers, etc.. develope your own work flow.. mine.. Raw to DPP to Lightroom for colors to photoshop..

hope that helps..

please other photogs add in what helped you to where you are at for this enthusiastic fella photog..

like Pham says, the key is to practice and accept all (or almost all) the oportunities you have to work in photography. Even if its to be someone's assistant.

Post processing is also a must nowadays. Some photographers pshop skills are far beyond their photography skills and they are making it big time. I'm not saying it's the way to go but it helps!

It's so easy now to learn by yourself with good forums like POTN, all the video tutorials etc.. There must be 10 tutorials for everything now, its just crazy!

Read good books for basics on photoshop, lighting and photography technique to get the basics, then put it in practice. trials and error like you said!

I'm in the same boat. Not living off photography yet but getting there!

I did everything myself with free tools, built my website etc etc...

i know how to this as ive been through this many times before!

you just take crazy nice shots of her eyes, shots of the kids and really out-do yourself with awesome pictures with the 85L then tell her that all of those wonderful pictures were impossible to do with your other lenses. You HAD to buy it for the family! loll

i finally went STUDIO on you guys.. lol..

here is one sneek peek from a clothing shoot i did last night.. this shoot is for a web site.. so the finished product will be DPI of 72 so really any lens would work.. but since i have this beast.. i put it to good use..

this manufacturer makes 1000's of tee shirts, sweat shirts, and hoodies.. etc.. for big names.. i can't say what names.. but they make great quality stuff.. on the expensive side of the outsource blanks..

china would be cheaper, Vietnam and India are on the top of the cheapest..

i had 7 college models @ purdue doing the shoot with me..

here is molly, the one model that has been with me from the beginning of my short photography career.. and her shot.

this was intended to show the sewing around the neck line.. double stitching..

i think studio stuff is pretty cool.. but once you get your settings down.. wow.. fire all day long..

i am so used to doing a scene and moving on to the next one.. and testing my chimping skills.. ha ha

Just tested out my new ND filter with beauty dish and it's freakin awesome! It was hard getting the shot since I was using a tripod and self timer, but this is the best of the bunch. Using a .9 tiffen ND filter, shot at f/2.8 with beauty dish above camera left:

My daughter was running out to a halloween party last night and my wife asked for a picture. I too was running out but I grabbed the camera and it had the 85 attached. I clicked off 2 images.

For a quick 'snapshot' that took me under 10 seconds to setup I realized why this lens is so awesome, and this is now one of my favorite images of my little girl (not so little now). Ridiculously tack sharp images with this lens. I am now learning to open it up a little instead of leaving it glued to f/1.2.

1DsMIII + 85L, 1/200 sec at f/2.0, ISO 400 w/ 580EXII on-camera flash with diffuser. I was holding the camera in portrait orientation so I got a bit of angle to the flash. Shot in RAW, a bit of unsharp mask and nothing else in PP.
