I really love that lens for the DOF control it allows. Here are 3 others images, this time from this year, where I used the DOF to pop up what I wanted ...

Pham,

for the heart shaped bokeh, are you using paper or did you machine out a lens cap?

Geno.. Lol.. i cut it out.. not machined.. i wish i had material for that.. though that isn't a bad idea since i use this alot..

and i have access to all the tools at my Subaru plant to use.. i should be able to engineer up a great cap for my 85L !

Yes, Cokin used to make things like this for use with their adapters. In addition, you could get additional masks to create your own.

Geno.. Lol.. i cut it out..

You put it on the hood! I tried it and put it over the end of the lens secured with a rubber band but when I focused it would get popped off. I have a cheapo Canon filter I was thinking of gluing it onto.

The lens cap thing was an idea I had. You can buy caps on eBay for a couple of bucks then dremmel them out in different shapes and in different sizes. 77mm would do lots of lenses.

Judging from all the photos I've seen, the 85L is hands down the best lens ever made. You just can't get that dreamy look anywhere else.

can't the 50L get the same bokeh?

djharmonix
8th of November 2009 (Sun), 23:14
well, the longer the lens, the thinner the depf of field so no, at the same distance, the 85L will produce more bokeh at the same aperture.

Don't get me wrong; the 50L is up there, too, in pretty much every category. But there's just something about the 85L that's ethereal.

I want it now, but I'm gonna have to sell my left arm for it.

i'm guessing he just used a paper cut-out of the heart shape, put it on the front of his lens, and made sure there were out of focus highlights behind his subject. the bokeh derives it's shape from the aperture so as long as the light is filtered through a heart-shaped aperture, all of the highlights will be heart-shaped.

excellent - i was unaware the subject would still come out the same with the stencil over the lens.

I don't know how you can even judge the focus of an image at that size. Obviously with a resize the image all around is going to be more in focus.

You can achieve a pretty good focus on both eyes at f/1.2. Looking at you straight ahead is better than at an angle so the focal length between you and both eyes are similar.

Obviously one will be in more focus but with a little bit of sharpening, it's hard to tell.

I've posted this image already but here's a larger file at f/1.2 which is not cropped:

If the depth of field was centered to the right of the left eye, closer to the bridge of the nose, then it would be possible to get both the girl's eyes in decent focus for a web sized image.

The specular highlights in pictures taken with the Mk II are more rounded than those taken with a Mk I, provided of course you stop down a little at least, and happen to have specular highlights present.

Other than that, they are virtually indistinguishable, unless you shoot them next to each other and pixelpeep. In the latter case you may see some minor differences in glare/flare/ghosting, and bokeh. Not the word "minor". When seeing the pics individually, I doubt anybody would be able to say with which of the two versions of this lens the picture was made.

Kind regards, Wim

Hi everyone

I just stumbled upon this thread with these lovely images of the EF 85 L. I wasn't planning to get one as I am still building my kit. Got the Canon macro I needed 180mm and the 70-200 F/2.8 IS that I desperately required also. Other than that the lenses are fairly good for my requirements with the bigma complementing for my wildlife needs etc. As my 7D came with the 18-135 lens which I am not exactly happy with it I was looking for a 24-105mm lens when suddenly someone I know is keen on selling it. But suddenly he let the cat out of the bag and told me also that he wants to sell the 85 L too. It has had very sporadic usage and aparently its in superb condition. When I decided to just browse reviews on it I was stunned at the image quality and also the price tag :). I am getting it at practically half the price of a new one, so now I am split minded. Should I go for the 85L or the 24-105 because at the end the price will be almost the same. 24-105 will be obviously new but the 85L is almost virtually new too.

I like taking shots of my kids and they are at the right age and eventually want to get into events and weddings etc. There will be plenty of oportunities to do these, and my sister wedding coming up soon. So I wonder what your suggestions would be please. Ideas would be much appreciated.

I read somewhere that the focusing speed of this lens is not exactly very fast compared to other USM lenses etc, although the reviewer writes wonders about the bokeh and quality etc of the images.
What threw me out is what I read about the review regarding the 24-105, said that for many if they had to have just one lens then the 24-105mm L would be the lens, and not having this in my kit is making me hesitate to get the 85L. But then looking at the attractive price and oportunity of getting the 85L is making me quite tempted to go for it.

I do use the 70-200 f/2.8 IS many times to take candid shots of the little ones and portraits also, but its just so tricky to carry it with me as a walkabout lens, and that's when the 24-105mm seems again the lens to go for right now and let the 85L rest ?

Thanks

Surely it's a no brainer, if it's a huge bargain then buy the 85L, if you don't like it sell it on (make a profit in the process) & then try the 24-105 ;)

Thank you :) looks to me that's the right way to go.

Now my next question that I forgot to mention is are there two versions of this so lovely lens? I see the 85mm f/1.2 L II USM, and as I haven't seen the lens and am basing upon what the seller is telling me on the phone, he did not mention the II part, so is there an older version by any chance that is not the II? Or it could be just because there is only one version so he disregards the last part of the specification?

Many thanks for the help

zuluart - If you don't want it for half price, I'll take it :)

Give it a try, you'll probably want the 24-105 too as they are rather different lenses.

Ask for the date code of the lens try and demo it first.

If you can get both. The 85L is simply amazing. No, it does not focus fast. I use it for portraits and that is not a problem for me. Now, basketball, might be a problem. Even if you get it half price, you could sell it if you do not like it for close to new price on e-bay.

Here are a couple from yesterday.

Just get them both.

Thanks very much for your input on this, it has really helped me a lot with the decision.
I am quite inclined now in getting the lens, seems more likely that its V1 but having seen these images I am really keen on giving it a go.
Will keep you posted on this, and please do not be surprised if you suddenly see a couple of shots with the 85L all of a sudden on this thread uploaded by me, :)

Thanks again for all the help

No doubt. I bought the 85L and thought that would be the only prime I wanted. Then I read the 50L threads, bought it. I thought I would be done. Then I read the 35L threads. Then I bought it. I think this is my Holy Trinity. I had to micoadjust the 85L and 35L and they are amazing. I think the 85L is the sharpest of my 3. I think the 50L is my favorite.

having just purchased the 35L to compliment my 135L, this is probably the last thread I should be looking at...

Recent shots. Hope the colors dont look boring. I dont really have a proper screen to adjust these images and it's eating me alive. The first two shots were edited on my friends computer so they're not so bad. The last shot is a capture out of a video shot at 1080p.
