Lighting looks pretty good. The eye closet to camera looks a little soft. If one eye is going to be soft don't make it the eye closest to camera. Also try to avoid in most cases putting the eyes on the 50% horizon line. Conversion looks pretty good though the white stripes on the left side of subject are a bit to hot and blending into the B/G.

I know to some of us this seems really obvious but this is a classic example of depth of field increasing the further the subject is away from the lens.
Whilst there will be comments that the dof is too narrow and to stop down you can achieve a similar effect by just being further away from the subject as illustrated above, shot at F/1.2
Framing is going to be different though but at the beginning when I was starting out I wouldn't of dreamt of shooting a shot like this at F/1.2

It's all good, lol. Ah, I see. I'll have to try that out and starting learning how to shoot at f/1.2. Do you find yourself having to manually focus the lens or is the af pretty good on the lens? I know it's not fast, but didn't know how accurate it was when I got there.

Just found out BHP shipped my 85 to a non existent address! My apt address here in West La, but to my hometown city (billing address). This is going to be a bitch to track down and get them to change this ..... ugghhh may not get it tomorrow now. Really disappointed right now and having trouble sleeping. lol, I wish. It's my last year at Ivy Tech, but I'll be transferring to IUPUI next year. I'd love to go to Purdue if I didn't have a stable job that funds new equipment ;)
That really sucks about the address though. I really hope they're able to reroute it and stuff. How far away is the billing address from Purdue?

It is Monticello so only 30 minutes. But the street address doesn't exist in Monticello. I'm giving the lafayette center a call to anticipate the package and change it hopefully.

Nope, i use AF all the time, what i mean "manual mode" is that my focus setting is on the * not the half press shutter (default), i know the focusing is "rather" hard with this lens, but i figure it out to take the same photo twice and refocusing it another on the next shot, with that method i think my error is minimal. yess it's not a pro style type, just don't wanna get a photo that's OOF :(

Nice....but I don't think that an 85IIL is really a studio lens, it's a bright enough to not need the flash ;-)

This was taken with the 85L from my buddy that was behind me while we were working on the fashion show (Pham - some of you may know him). I was however at this time was not using the 85L, but he was. See works fine ;) This is me working with Tara. Final image of what i took is below.

Sure was except the softbox you're referring to is the 69" silver PLM.

thinking about getting this lens... but of course i would have to ditch a lens to pay for it... or some of it.
would anyone sell a 24-70L to buy this lens on a FF camera? i have a 35L and a 50mm and a 135L.
is the 85L too close to a 135L?

I sold my 24-70L to fund the 35L... so I have a 35L, 85L II and 200 f/2.8L. I still want a 135L and will hold out for a 24-70 f/2.8L II. That's the ONLY zoom I really want and am willing to wait for the next version.

I don't think I'd want to trade the 24-70 for the 85. To me, the 24-70 is a real tool, as in a very versatile workhorse, whereas the 85 is special for those special things:).

I did in fact put the focus on his eyelash. With how shallow the depth of field is I feel his eyelash and whiskers on chin are pretty sharp. May not be as obvious unless you zoom in.

Another quick snapshot to share. Loved the light he was in. Shot it at 1.8 and it is stunningly sharp at 100%:

Even if it wasn't sharp, I'd still fall in love with this lens for the color rendition and the bokeh.

Went out for a hike yesterday where the birds will literally eat out of your hand. Loving the new lens.

No problem. Thanks to you to.
Seem to be very good with dogs. I try to photography both of mine and it's hard. Mostly because i can not light their eyes properly and with a natural look to them. They have a lot of hair around the eyes, that's probably the main reason. Plus I can not get them to stay still they always jump on me

I've had quite some time to practise on dogs since i've lived in the middle of a couple ones since i were a kid. Glad to hear that i'm at least good at what i shoot, even if it's just dogs. This particular dog was very easy to shoot, but my 85L has had some near death experiences with some of the puppies i've shot.
Best of luck getting those eyes lit ;)
