Wow, excellent shots of the lens. I think it looks better without the hood too, but if I bought one, I don't know if I'd have the balls to go shooting with no hood with all that glass hanging out!
I have a B+W filter on it. I just took it off for the photos. I had a door bang into it over the holidays - that gave me a small heart attack.

Yikes, I'd be worried that the UV filter threads would be stuck on impact, but as long as there's insurance, lol

Images below are from 5D // 85L-II // 1600 ISO // f/1.2 // ONE CANDLE // HAND HELD. I was just messing around one night to check out the low light performance. I am going to reshoot these soon using a tripod for see how sharp I can get them.

The 1D series has a top-of-the-line advanced focusing system, so it would by design have improved auto-focus over not just the 5D, but over all of the prosumer line. So, theoretically, any lens would "perform better" on a 1D camera -- that's a big reason why some of us break the bank to get one!

If you like the 5D viewfinder and the sweet focusing that you see in the viewfinder, you'll like the 1D! It's a perfect complement to the 5D (in lieu of 1Ds)!

I don't have any issues with focus speed on my 5D but it seems to lock faster on my 1DmkIII most likely due to the better electronics.

Question:
I have the 85 L but not the 85 1.8. To those who have or who have used both, is the 85 1.8 better for fast focusing in things like sports? I've seen comments suggesting this, but I'd like to hear some statements from experience!

My goodness, this lens produces incredible bokeh and seems to be second to none in low light conditions. I can't believe how many good images I've gandered at the last twenty-two or so pages of this thread. I do have one question though...
Anyone using a 1.6x crop body like the 40D find it too long for most of their needs?
I have seen countless photos taken with 5Ds (makes me regret selling mine) and other larger sensor bodies, but only a select few from the 40D.
I am sitting on the "add to cart" button right now practically but I don't want to be the only one to purchase this lens and actually regret it.

I haven't used it on my 40D yet, but I've used it on my 20D. Too long is a relative term. Too long for what? On a 40D it will have a FOV equivalent to that of a 135mm lens on a FF camera - and that is a very respectable length for portrait and glamour lens.

I understand the term is relative. What I asking was, is if it was too long for portraiture and walkaround.
So looking a 135mm lens shots on a FF will give me an idea of what to expect with this lens on a 40D? I mean, is composition an issue on the smaller sensor?

annunaki,
Looking at your signature, it looks as though you have a 40D and a 70-200....so....why not put that lens on and set it at 85mm for a few dozen/hundred pics and see what you think of it yourself? That way you can be the judge of whether or not you like that focal length instead of relying on what others think. :)
btw: Very nice pics Jeff...also nice pics of that same model in the 35L archive...

Best advice ever. I had completely forgotten I had something in that range. I had disregarded the 70-200mm because I was contemplating selling or trading it for this prime as it has a bokeh potential I crave. Oh and yes, I'm still contemplating it.
Silly of me though to forget the single most expensive lens purchase I've made.
(I still wouldn't mind seeing what 40D users and the like get out of this lens.)

It's definitely not too long for portraiture, especially outdoor portraiture or a roomy studio. As a walk around, it's probably a bit long, but there sure aren't many people that would use an 85L as a walk around lens. The AF is slow compared to most lenses, and it's essentially a studio/portraiture lens.

I just love this lens. Oh, I've said that before, but here's why. When you get such great background effects, you have much more flexibility in making images as the exact nature of the background becomes unimportant. Oddly, I believe I get more keepers with this lens because of the background effect.

i sold my 70-200 f2.8 IS to purchase this lens .. should be here next monday :D .. i hardly ever used the 70-200 and used the 85 f1.8 more, but the 85L is just something else, gotta have it lol

Man, when I first held the 85L in my hands, I was just floored.
It was big and heavy...just the way I like my lenses.:D
Then I removed the lens cap and was just stunned...almost the entire opening is glass...LOL!
The one thing I immediately noticed was the slowness of the AF, but I knew that going in. The 85 1.8 puts it to shame in that department.
But man...that bokeh is craziness...and sharp at f1.2...craziness again.

ISO 3200, pushed just over a stop in Lightroom. So, effectively 6400 :) This is what the camera does anyways to get ISO 3200, pushing 1600 a stop.

man i just got the lens last nite. ive seen pics of how big it is, but wow .. its a FAT lens lol. that huge glass could swallow the f1.8. cant wait to shoot with it. can already feel the slowness of the AF compared to the f1.8 but not too bad.

I've also just bought one of these awesome lenses. Everyone comments on the slowness of the AF. Doesn't bother me because I was expecting it.
I think the problem is, that there isn't a motor strong enough to rotate/move that much heavy glass really quickly. I suspect slow focussing is going to be a problem with this type of lens for a long time.

Thanks for the kind words Ninab. Well I didn't show you all the crappy shots I took, but I think people should know...YOU CAN TAKE LOTS OF CRAPPY SHOTS WITH THIS LENS EVERYBODY!
Like I said, it's terribly difficult to get the focus right. This might just be because of the very narrow DOF at f:1.2. I'd sure appreciate knowing how everyone else gets such sharp shots. Do you just use the centre focus point or something?
Take this shot for example....I was trying to make sure the eyes were in focus, but somehow two other bits are focussed and the eyes are soft:evil:
