Also, I shot with my 85L on a 1ds Mark III yesterday, how can that thing make the focus speed so much faster!? I put the cap on and held the focus down to see how fast it was from MFD to infinity. It, from my non scientific analyzation, seemed like nearly 2x the speed. It felt like a whole different lens, I was shocked at how fast it was!

Yes, compared to the 5D. Maybe 2x is a bit exaggerated, but it was fast enough that I said "Wow, I can't believe how much faster this 85 focuses on this camera! (the 1ds)"
And thanks. Just got the 5D 2 days ago, so I'm working my way into the FF world :D

Well I'll at one point or another be meeting up with my friend that owns the 1ds. Next time I'll take a video of it focusing from MFD to infinity then one on my 5D.

Not sure if it was me or not but I "think" my 85L was faster on my 1Dsmk2 and 1Dmk3 than on my 5D as well. It is a slug that's for sure and definitely my slowest focussing lens...I don't have a 1 series at the moment so all I know is that it performs flawlessly on my 5Dmk2.

It's weird -- i've owned both the 8f and the 1D3 for a couple years or more but for some reason I always have put the 85 on my 5D...however, Perry, who not only started the 5D Classic thread but stirred up a lot of interest in the 85, stated that the 85 did in fact focus a lot faster on the 1D3, so I'm presuming the same for the 1Ds. Don't know why, and at some point I'll get over it and try the 85 on my 1D3, but for now just reporting some hearsay that I consider pretty reliable.

Well, if the autofocus is not as accurate on the 5D, will the lens not slow down how fast it moves the elements, as to better recognize when it is in focus?

The AF is accurate on the 5D -- the center point is quite accurate, and, given enough light to outer points are accurate as well, but there is probably less speed. It's something that slows things down with the 85 that seems to speed up with a 1D body, but I don't know the technical details. Part of it is the design of the focus system on the lens -- it's got the AF but it also is designed to be very responsive to MF, I believe, with fine incremental movement, rather the quick broad strokes of more AF-oriented lenses. But, like I say, I don't know too much about the technical details, and why the 1D body seems to be substantially different.

I tried this out in a camera store about 2 weeks ago on a 50D, 5D2, and 1DIII. The 85LII on the 1DIII is indeed faster than the 50D and 5D2 (which are equal as I can tell). I regret not recording the comparison on my phone, but I would put the focus drive speed of the 1DIII as taking 70% the time of the 50D and 5D2 from MFD to infinity (noticeably faster but not 2x).
I would assume it has to do with the 1DIII battery providing higher voltage (11.1v) to the lens than the 50D or 5D2 (both 7.4v) to enable the higher focus drive speed.

Is the amperage on the battery different? Maybe more power from the 1D has something to do with the speed.

did you get the mk1 or Mk2?
I don't have a problem with flare, I find that the biggest flaw is the CA between F1.2 and F2. But since it's pretty much the best lens under F1.8 I cannot complain!
Just try to avoid very harsh sunlight on white and you should be fine.

I took these 2 shots when I first purchased my 85mm 1.2 series 1 lens and I am never disappointed with the results I get from this lens at all. The second shot is shot under a tree and at F1.2 and you can see how shallow the DOF is, but I love it.

Thanks, I love the shallow DoF on this lens, especially on FF! I especially love how it captures a "slice" of the snow fall and makes the other flakes look dreamy.... hard to describe it...

Thanks, I've been shooting some 35mm for my photo class and I sometimes just want that "film" look vs the super clean digital look. There is just something film still has...

I dunno if it could use more PP... i like the vignetting and the unsaturated tone how they are.
maybe a black frame with white padding with the photo in the middle.
if you really wanted to screw with it you could PS a flower in the green patch... like a red rose.. saturate the green a lil more (if you have it in RAW that would be easy).

Well I agree, the vignetting and unsaturated tone really add to the image. One colored flower would be pretty great in it now that you mention it... I still have the psd file, if I have off of school tomorrow again I may screw around with it.

thanks guys..
here are the set up shots
this is part 1 of my 4 seasons series..
spring, summer and fall will be coming soon..
i haven't thought up of them yet.. LOL
this series is inspired by a great russian photographer Oleg Igorin... he is the man ! and i say he has gained my attention as an industry standard.
this shot was done in a parking garage with 3 speed lights.. and a single alien bee strobe AB1600..
i had the glitter cross lighted by 2 speedlights gelled with blue and green.. the green wasn't showing up too well..
anyways.. it is a project i have been thinking of doing for awhile and hadn't had a chance.. but last night presented it self..
1 speed light in the rear and a shoot thru for the wall and partial side lighting
2 speed lights for the cross lighting..
1 AB 1600 for the key light 64PLM was used.
all speed lights were full power
the AB1600 was just below 1/4 power being it was really close to Katie
lots of glitter was use.. LOL.. really fun shot..

haha.. don't do the pocket wizards. i will sell you mine.. actually i don't recommend the flex pocket wizards..
i recently bought a pair of radio poppers RX system.. and will be selling my flex's..
anyways.. lighting is so important ! so spend 2/3rd's on your lighting from this point on..
i will and others will probably say the same thing.. get lighting and learn manual lighting ! best thing i did for my photography career was to learn manual lighting..
