Very Interesting. Mine does work only while the shutter button is pressed. I may ACTUALLY have to look at a manual for once!!
Yeah, the manual and what my friend said didn't make any sense until I switched it to front button focus. Back to the rear it goes!
Well, if anything, I can do arm curls with it!! Holy crap this thing is hefty!

Beautiful shot! Is the lens capable of tracking the dogs movement at all or is AF just to slow?

It looks like cross processing or split toning, not really sure though. I am sure Migs could tell you, if he wishes to share.
Yep, cross processing. I like getting my images to a proper looking color before I add any kind of treatment to them. That way the client has the image as it's intended out of camera plus a more edited image with the vibe I'm envisioning.
For this case, we were doing a retro sorta beach vibe with run down cottage fences.
In this set, I used cross processing and adding a lot of warm color temperatures.

One of things I can't stand is when people don't take the time to mask the effect of the texture on the subject. THANK YOU for not applying the texture on top of your model.

Pham there was a large window a bit behind me low ceilings and mixed lighting ( as you can see in the bokeh in the background so I moved him until the background and the light was right. He had a very thin face so I turned it so he got a broad light. It was just to flat as butterfly and definitely didn't work short.

Senior shot with Single Softbox...
done with one soft box.. and manual 580 ex triggered by the cactus system for this one..
really dragged the shutter to get the ambient light in there
Look at the lines.. All the lines go towards Megan.. even the cars, and lights in the background.. so use this as an example of how to bring composition to help your subject..
580 was @ 1/32 power
i was at very high ISO..
light was camera right boomed by her sister

Every time I do a shoot without my 85L, I miss it more. Canon is taking their sweet time with it this time - they didn't even show that they had received it until 4-5 days after it arrived in Irvine. This is the slowest repair they have done.

I also saw your sale of the 85LII (1475EUR). I think the reason why nobody wants to buy it, is because you can buy it at a Swiss shop new for 1595 EUR incl shipping.
For a price difference of 125 EUR on a lens of 1600 EUR, it's not really worth buying something used (with also taking certain risks of buying second hand).
If you put it at 1300 EUR, I think you will have more luck. I'm also looking to buy this lens...

A swiss shop that sells it for that price? That's mad cheap! Most stores sell it for about 1800-1900 euro
In that case I could consider lowering the price to 1300 indeed.
Thanks for the tip.

working with couples might be daunting but here is how you can use simple composition to help.
Smiling is easy,
holding hands is easy
and leaning and sitting down is easy..
all equals a romantic private shot..

a photo shoot for Cherry...
she is from Tennessee and requested a country scene shot.
this shot works because we put her into a Curvy pose and the leaning on the fence is natural looking, and the leading and ending lines of the fence leads to her..
i desaturated, and added a rust layer scratchy texture
she is often my Light Stand holder or Light Boomer for me.
thanks Cherry for helping me the other day..

thanks Harley !
and another one i have been sitting on..
this winter was cold and long..
on Xmas day i asked Kathryn if she was bored? and if she was, lets do a shoot in the middle of the night... haha..
so what happened was her whole family came out and did this shoot with me..
dad held the lights, mom helped with the other light, and patrick her bro also assisted with more lighting
it was extremely cold, about 18 degrees, and young Kathryn held it in like a pro..
most of the snow falling was real, i added about 30 percent more, the bokeh on the trees is real.. bottom line i was freezing my you know what off.. but i rather be taking photos than being bored at home.. haha..
this edit involves many layers of textures.. but that is all i did.. simple textures post work
lighting was 2 lights.. AB1600 in the side for the rear kicker
and key light was the AB1600 with A beauty dish.. both were about 1/4 power

If you are shooting at the min focusing distance the DoF is VERY VERY shallow. This lens is very unforgiving wide open. You need to nail focus and it takes some practice to get consistent at it.

Well I too have had the (expect it to be amazing cause it's super expensive and it's prime and it should just work at all apertures.....followed by it's crap, it's soft, I miss more than I hit...I hate it, toys out of pram...selling it!).......then one calms down, posts here and the other kind members put you into touch....

Hmm, this lens has worked great for me so far,
but once I tried to shoot full body shots @ 1.2 there seems
to be 0% success rate in terms of AF...
Never happens when I shoot head or torso,
but only when I move far enough.
---
Would this be safe to say its a case of front focusing?
This is @ 1.2 on tripod and using some bright tungstens.
Subject distance was 12.8 feet
Left side is Oneshot AF on the center of the nose, has a flash
mounted on the camera for AF assist but it never lit so I'd assume
there's enough light for focus. Notice how the focus is on the foot.
Right side is manual.

That really isn't the greatest shot to test for front/back focusing. You should try the focus sheet or the AA batteries lineup (i.e. something where the list of reference posts is continuous both in front and behind your point of focus - what you posted there is semi-helpful for testing back-focus but less so for front).

Really? Thanks for sharing. I'm really thinking about purchasing this lens! Beautiful shot.
I don't think you'd regret it one bit! There's really something magical about the images which come out of this lens.. especially at 1.2. Ages ago I compared 1.2 vs 1.4, and there's just something special about the 1.2 images. The combination of the natural vignette; ultra-low Dof and beautiful bokeh; and this special "pop" which I noticed (that wasn't as apparent at 1.4) really makes this lens something special to shoot with wide-open. There are of course, downsides. It's heavy, bulky and the AF is slow. But once you see what the lens is capable of, you won't be looking back.

Thanks Collin. With such a shallow DOF AND slow AF, it sounds like getting a photo in focus can be a challenge? Or is the AF not as bad as I'm thinking?

Loved the article. Love what you had to say about flickr and Explore. I have only had 16 photos make it...and the highest I achieved as 27th....until that magical day that I hit #1. It was a cool feeling.....
Love your work and seeing how you do things.
