It does take some practice. The center point is the most accurate in low light but I have learned to use the other points as well. Wide open and if you're in at the closest focusing distance your focus has got to be dead on. Sometimes I'll focus manual. In a portrait the eyes have to be sharp.

Here's my contribution. This was my first go with this lens. I found it very difficult to get the focus right at f/1.2. You have to be really careful with the focus points you use.

Man...I'm waiting until I get full frame to take full advantage of this lens (no pun intended). Really tempted to get a used 5D and then get this little hunny of a lens :D. I don't think my 85mm f/1.8 would like her, though.

Paul: by the way, were your pictures on a 5D or other full frame? Thanks

Yes on a 5D. Only second time I've used that too. What a camera! Well worth getting.

Oh yes! It's not too long on a 1.6 crop. You'd have to stand a long way back to frame a group of say, four people though.

Ahhh... the debate. Can't decide on 5D or 85mm f/1.2 as my next step. I would get both if I had enough money. If I reshuffle my kit, then I could make room for both. If you want to help me out with my decision...started a thread at

It's not often (if ever) that I can get my wife to stand still for a photo or two. I caught her on the way out to a meeting earlier today while playing with my relatively new 85 L f/1.2 toy. This one is hand held at f/1.2, 1/80th, ISO 100 and available light. I'm just so impressed with this lens and the more I use it, the more I like it!!:D:D:D

When shooting wide open from a moderate distance the lens seems to focus on the subject's foreheard.

Mention of using center focus .... can someone describe in more detail their method (camera settings, technique, etc.) for making sure eyes are in focus? Thanks ....

S-S
13th of March 2008 (Thu), 04:39
focus on the closest eye, hold down shutter, carefully recompose making sure you don't sway backwards or forwards when moving the camera

for close shots, you may have to sway slightly to compensate for shifting the angle of the camera - fiddly stuff

some ppl use the different focus points but that always takes me too long to scroll through them, personally

I agree with somethingsimple about the actual technique but in practice, it isn't only the application of good technique. Just speaking from my very limited experience with this lens, shooting wide open (especially hand held) can be trying. On my 40D the DOF at f/1.2 from eight feet is only 0.12 inches according to the DOF calculator that I use. So...my subject was moving about, I was moving for good position and I'm not the best at hand holding. The result is lots of shots and very few real "keepers". My technique (if you can call it that) was to use center focus on the bridge of the nose, keep shooting and hope for the best!!:D

msurdin
13th of March 2008 (Thu), 10:03
Thank you ... I too have found it very difficult when shooting wide open to maintain focus. Works best when subject is looking directly at the camera ... both eyes on the same plane.

yeah its not easy with this lens as it focuses so slowly and has such shallow DOF - its certainly not an easy lens for moving subjects

but hey - see it as a challenge! lol (or always shoot with it on a pod) - its beautifully sharp wide open when it IS focused... i want it back :(

TheGreatDivorce

I select the focus point nearest the eye, fitting the composition I have in mind. I have the AF point selection set to the joystick thingamajigger on the back of the 5D :)

I also shoot a few frames usually. Keep at it, your keeper rate will (probably) go up with time and practice.

Another sample shot taken during my sister-in-law's wedding in January recently. The picture shows the groom in traditional costume (blurred in the background) holding the 'keris', the traditional weapon used by the Malays, the indigenous of Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and the southern parts of Thailand and Philippines. The keris is only currently used for ceremonial purposes only.

My guess is you need the 35mm for nighttime street. Will you have fast enough shutter speeds with the 85/?

Barely. Shooting at f1.4 1/80 and ISO3200 will get me perfectly exposed with average street lighting in my area. Quite high ISO, but doable considering exposure will be great.

It's no fun when f1.4 is still not fast enough, damn dim London streets

Have I mentioned that I hate you guys?

I've vowed that the day I have my first child, I'm buying an 85L.

Good call! The 85L takes great baby photos.

I just picked up an 85L MKI version in a camera packaged deal, and wasn't really sure what to expect. My low light lens up to this point was the 50mm f/1.4. All I can say is WOW! The focusing is a bit slow, but nothing that really bugs me. I did have to do some microadjustments to my MKIII, something like +5 or so.

One shot at f/1.8 for fun, and one at f/1.2, I really like this lens!

Personally I dont use it much. I have had 1 on loan for over a year and mates in no hurry to get it back.

Anyway a couple of pics. It is so heavy that it will not stand up on a 1D

The DOF is so narrow but sharp.I have found after a year that its a very creative photographer lens as this tread shows.

Absolutely, sometimes tricky at 1.2, but this is one of the rarer times both eyes were at the same distance and he stopped moving, although he rarely stops moving. Nothing wrong with the single eye in focus effect either.

when i borrowed this lens for a week i found i had to use it on my 350D, because on my 40D it did weird things to the battery - while focusing, the camera would often just turn off, and when i turned it back on it said low batt - but when i swapped lenses, battery was actually still full!

but on 350D 1 battery lasted for ages as normal

has anyone else had problems like this with the 85L or other camera/lens combos? what is the solution?

I am considering trying some night animal photography and realise I need really fast lens. I have the 85L which is probably the longest lens available at f1.2. However, I was thinking of using - in case its needed - a teleconverter but I realise that at the back of the lens, the glass protrudes into the shutter chamber. I am not sure but I suspect that if I try to connect a teleconverter, it will damage the L glass.

Has anyone used a TC on an 85L without problems? I am using a Kenko 1.5 TC.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I've tried it. Don't bother, it is not worth the effort. The IQ gets very bad with this lens and a tcon, especially considering its "normal" :) performance. At least, that was my experience, both with a Kenko (Soligor) 1.4X, and the Canon LifeSize Convertor (it was clearly not made for macro either :)).

I reckon this is probably due to the large lens element at the back, in combination with the deliberate residual spherical aberration (which gives it its excellent bokeh).

Kind regards, Wim

^ But it works great with tubes! ;)

DO NOT attempt to attach a Canon TC, they protrude into the lens, which clearly isn't possible on the 85L. It should be obvious, but I figured I'd mention it, heh.

Hi Wim

Thank goodness I did not depend on this combination. So far I have planned to use the 85L 35L and 50mm f1.4 (considering borrowing a friend's 50L as well). Shooting at one stop down and with RAW and spot metering with live view at ISO1600. Hopefully I can get at least one good image per animal and my noise removers can do its magic! Cross my fingers! :-)

Cheers
Harry
