This is directed to those who have both the 85L and the 50L. Would you advise for or against having both lenses? How are they used differently from each other?
I already have the 85L and the 50mm f1.4 and am contemplating upgrading to a 50L but had been hesitating because I hardly use the 50mm focal length (for both my 5D and 40D).
Most grateful for some input by owners who have both of the L primes. Thanks for reading and responding! :-)

Rather than posting these question in the picture archive threads, it would probably have been better to ask this in a separate topic.
However, I have both, and the answer is simple: there is a 1.7X linear factor between them. At parties that is a difference of full body shots vs portraits, from the same shooting distance.
Other than that, the 50 F/1.4 can't hold a candle to the 50L IMO, especially at large apertures. The 50L has 85L qualities, where the 50 F/1.4 maybe only so from about F/3.5 upwards. And even then, colour and contrast are not the same. OTOH, your processing skills, from the photographs I've seen, created by you, are well beyond what most people are capable of doing, so I reckon you could get very close even with a 50 F/1.4. However, the 50L makes it easier, and it is definitely sharper, more contrasty and has better colours at those for low light and shallow DoF photography all important large apertures.
HTH, kind regards, Wim

I am quite surprised that not a single 50L 85L owner had any negative to share about the 50L. I thought that there would be at least a small handful that would advise me to stay where I am but now the temptation to upgrade has gotten a substantial push.
WIM, as always, your explanation makes a very convincing case for me to upgrade. :-)

So after a couple years of hearing how amazing this lens is, I finally decided to buy one. Ordered it from B&H on Sunday, UPS just dropped it off. I have to say, I can't believe how huge this thing is. I expected a big, heavy lens, but this things is REALLY big and REALLY heavy. Pretty amazing. :)
Not really much I can do with it now, have to wait until tonight. Just thought I would share my excitement!
BTW, its a UW04 date code, so this baby just rolled off the assembly line last month.

Your prime lineup is very sexy :(.
I've vowed that the day my first child is born, I will go out and buy this lens.
Don't know if I can wait that long though! I hate this thread so much!!

Thanks! I don't know if I'll keep both the 135 and the 85, but I figure I'll give it a few months and see how it goes. The 135 is really an excellent lens. I'm curious to see how much I use the 85L--it better be a lot for this kind of money!
I've vowed that the day my first child is born, I will go out and buy this lens.
See, the trouble with this logic is that when you have your first child, you likely won't have the money to be buying expensive lenses. Best to buy them now and have them ready for the kids. At least, thats what I tell myself. ;)

If you're going to buy it eventually, you might as well buy it now and get as much use out of it as possible. It'll last you forever :)

ekk_xt,
Fantastic shots! So you took both the 85L and the 135L to Vietnam? I'm thinking of taking one or the other on my next vacation wherever that may be. Just curious to know now looking back if you think there was a need for both. My preference is to travel light with only two lenses - maybe a 35L and 135L.

thanks! looking back, im glad i brought both lens. i had originally planned on leaving the 135L at home and my friend talked me into bringing it the night before i left. i left the hood at home though but I had a uv filter on it. deciding between either 85 or 135 is tough though. i find the 85 focal length pretty good for walk-around where its long enough for some candids, yet not too long so you can still came some environment in the background. you can definitely feel the weight of the 85L walking around with it after awhile though. i was in vietnam for 3 weeks and stayed majority of the time at my grandparents so i was able to just take 1 or 2 lens (sometimes 3) depending on where we went and left the other stuff at home. where are you going for vacatioN?

I'm seriously considering selling my 135L in order to get this lens. I love my 135L, it's sharper than the 85L wide open but of course that's at f2. My problem with it however is it's too long, even on a 1.3 crop camera.
An 85mm on a 1.6 crop is oddly exactly 136mm.
Any one that can comment on the use of the 85L on a 1D and 40D (or any 1.6 crop)? I'm hoping it's not too tight of a zoom as I'm most comfortable around 50mm or so. This thread really does help convincing me that this is the right lens however.

hi there Tee,
well, when i use the canon 50mm f/1.4(already sold) the FL is good on my crop for portrait photography, but the 85L is way too long for a full body portrait, it's good for full face and half body portrait (on a 1D is slightly the same as 110mm FL). I'm considering to get FF(5D) to get more use of the 85L, the 85L on a FF is slightly the same FL when i use the 50mm on a crop. i recommend the 50L/35L for better use on a crop. But if you sell the 135L i bet you'll miss the FL that can get that full face/half body portrait :)
my main focus photography is portrait and landscape btw :)

i was in Hue majority of the time since thats where both my parents are from. countryside of Hue, down the street from Thuan An beach. also spent the last few days in Saigon. i like Hue better though, not as hectic and everything is cheaper in Hue lol. i went there 3 years ago back then i only had a p&s, after the trip was when I got my first DSLR, 350D .. and a few L's later, here I am lol. cant wait to go back sometime! i love it there.

I actually like the flare as I believe it adds a window like view to the photograph.
I have noticed that the 85L does exhibit more lens flare than my other L primes, though I like to think that it adds to its personality :)
