Well with our recent discussion about how long the v2 can withstand the fan. Presently I'm running a fan on my v2 constantly to see how long it survives. So far 30 minutes of constant running on a fully charged v2. I'll keep you posted.

Nope it's actually almost as cool as the wind coming from the fan. I have it set on slow switch for the battery and high for the fan knob. Still going over an hour. Almost 2 hours. Started at 3:15pm.

Tested this lens on a 7D for a few minutes today i wasn't that impressed with the results.
I figure i need a FF camera to bring out what i want from this beast, i suspect my 85mm f/1.8 will get better bokeh on a 5D then a 85L will get on a 7D.

Aurielle Model ~ Portfolio Grey Seemless
Aurielle and I are trying to get a portfolio started for her..
she is in her early 20's and i feel she has great potential to go far in the beauty business of modeling ..
The Grey Seemless was provided by Ryan O Hicks, setting this thing up and taking down is a real pain.. thanks for bringing this Ryan..
to get this shot we had to have..
1. A fan for hair
2. Key lighting was the Quadra camera left @ 2.8 power
3. Side lighting was the 60 inch Softlighter in with AB1600 @ 1/2 power camera right rear for the fill
about the skin work.. (i am still learning skin work, the dodge and burn, at pixel level, takes really long.. so i am experimenting with other methods that gets good results but much less time.. ) i do know the simple plug in's don't get the pro results you want so don't do plug ins..
3 layers..
1. top layer is a high pass filter @ opacity of 33 percent with blending mode of overlay
2. 2nd layer is a cleaned up layer of skin smoothing opacity of 88-90 percent
3. original layer that was hand cleaned up with photoshop spot healer manual mode
BTW it is weird to work with Grey Seemless for me.. it isn't my style... haha

The Ryan Supremacy
had a chance to work with Ryan O Hicks as a Model
my concept was to create a photo that looks like a movie still..
i have been watching TV shows and paying serious attention to the lighting..
shows that have great lighting..
CSI Miami
Star Trek movie - the one with young captain kirk
the actual show that i was watching was dexter - showtime that inspired me on this...
but i wanted to create something different with the Borne Identity theme...
i don't know if it is like the Borne Series, but oh well it was a try..
lighting was 4 speed lights on this one
2 in the rear bare at 1/8 power
1 camera left in a 86PML at 1/2 power with green gel
1 camera right with 40 inch Soft lighter with blue gel at 1/16th power

Between 100 and 400 isos it's so much higher than any a of the canon bodies

Let's hope Canon won't wait too long

Hi,
After reading tons of positive review of EF 85 1.2 L II in this thread, I bought this lens. For in-door portrait, the copy I have is super sharp, the focus is very fast and dead-on.
However, for the out-door, when the object is under direct sun light, the copy has CA (color blur) problem. Both pictures are shoot at 1.2. In the first (white car) one, purple fringing is obvious. In the second one (roof shingle), both green and purple fringing are clearly visible. I tried to fix the CA using latest DPP (v3.9). However, the improvement is almost negligible.
Do you think I got a bad copy? Or it's normal? Thanks!

It's normal for the 85 @ 1.2
All three copies of the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM Lens I have used to date show more CA (Chromatic Aberration) than the older 85 L. And my 85 f/1.8 shows less CA than either version of the 85 L lens. The 85 II lenses I have used are producing noticeable CA at the widest apertures when sun glares from something reflective in the shot (such as a chrome car bumper). For most applications, the CA will not be a big deal - and removing it in post-processing is often possible.
Copied from: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/reviews/canon-ef-85mm-f-1.2-l-ii-usm-lens-review.aspx
Lightroom, and possibly other pp applications, has functions to reduce it.

Some degree of CA is common -- your first shot shows the most common conditions of high contrast, and of course the bright white against dark detail makes it stand out like a sore thumb.
This kind of thing is better handled with something other than DPP, unfortunately. As far as Raw processors, Lightroom, Apertures, maybe Capture One have local adjstment brushes and I know Lightroom has some good "targeted" color channel adjustments so you can use a brush to desaturate the purple fringing in specific areas or do a global desaturation of purple (or the same with the greens).
But, of course, Photoshop or other software that has layers, masks and special tools are the "standard" way of approaching things -- you can make selections, deal with them using masks and precise brushes, etc.
By the way, it's not just the 85 -- you get this type of thing with the 50L also just because the extremely wide apertures make them vulnerable to this.

Those shots are crops !? If not, this might be the worst pics this lens can do. For crops @ 1.2 in sun light, my copy is tack sharp. Of course CA and fringing in high contrast shots looks like yours. Technique is the key to avoid those behaviour : AF in One shot mode, no hard black/white contrast, low iso...
But the 85L is generally really tack sharp, more dedicated to low light situations already. Your shots seems unsharp for me but it's hard to judge on 2 shots and not specially taken in the best conditions. The 85L is capable of best and worst. By using it, you'll learn the results you'll get from the scene you have in front of you and sometimes avoid the awful shot...

Just an interesting note:
I just had the rear element replaced on my 85L (camera fell and hit it during fast lens change). When I dropped it off, I mentioned that the focus ring was pretty loose. I said that I've heard that they are all a little loose on the 85L, but that mine maybe was a little too loose.
By loose, I mean that it has extra play in it, not rotational play but front to back slop. I didn't expect them to completely fix it, since I've heard they all have some slop, but I was hoping they would make it less sloppy, like a new 85L.
Canon completely too all play out of the ring. It's still just as smooth, and has a little more resistance when rotating to focus, and it has NO play at all.
I didn't think it was possible to have an 85L with slop-free focus ring, but I have the proof in my hand, and it feels fantastic!
Just FYI

Nice to hear they fixed your sloppy ring too. Didn't know they were suppose to be sloppy. Mine has no slop.
I asked around a few years ago and it seemed then that the general feeling was that many, if not most, of them had some play in the ring and wasn't as slop-free as the ring on the 50/1.2 or some other L lenses. So I just accepted the fact that mine was fine. I asked can't twice before and they told me that the 85L's have a little play, so they didn't think it needed anything adjusted or fixed. The only difference this time is that since they had to open it all up anyways to fix everything, I asked them to check it out and it came back tighter than when I first got it (it had some play when I first got it).

I noticed that when i was at photokina this year and tested an 85L on a 1d4 at canon test stand (mostly for the autofocus on the 1d4 because i have 5d2 and i was curious). That 85 had major play on the focus ring comparing to mine wich has none of that. I'm thinking that with that issue is more vulnerable to water/moisture/dust.

Tonylong: to my surprise, the 85mm f1.8 has over 1 million views as well :D
Purchased the mark one 2 weeks ago and never regretted a bit!I shoot wide open most of the time so sharpness is quite an important factor, this lens never failed to impress. Except for the first photo, the rest were shot wide open.

This golden light only lasted for about 5-10 mins tops.. just glad we got there in time to get a couple shots..
Lighting was Elinchrom Quadra with Deep Octa Boomed by her Brother's Friend..
power of the quadra was 3.5-3.9 camera left
i had a Neutral Density Filter Value of .6 to get it opened up and be capable with my shutter sync speeds..

Meet West Wilder, my 3 month old baby boy. This is going to be his christmas present to his grandmas and grandpas. We live far away from family so "baby in a suitcase coming to see you" means a lot to them.
Light with an Elinchrom ranger/ deep ocata/ and a speed light for a hint of pop in the back.

Not surprising at all to me. People of course want to compare the 1.8 with 1.2 to see if they can justify getting the 1.2 version.
