I went to a Native American Pow wow yesterday in a local school gymnasium. I'm not used to doing indoor-venue shoots like that and wasn't sure of what to "pack" (I had to park quite a ways away) so I brought the 5D Classic with the 85 attached along with the 1D3 and the 24-70 attached. I got some shots!

I'm saving up for this lens, and I'm almost there.
Hopefully, I'll be joining you guys soon.
Question:
I currently have the 85mm 1.8 and love every bit of it, but still want to get this lens as I've seen awesome photos from you guys and the last piece to complete the Holy Trinity :)
I've read that the focus on 85L is slower than the 1.8 and also read that once you've learn to use the 85L, you'll be allright. Would you mind sharing your experience (I'm using 5dm2)?
I mainly take pictures of my kids, so speedy AF is a plus for me.

Nice work Allen. :)

Captevo

I have the 5D2 and both 85's....

The F/1.8 I would use in fast moving situations....indoor sports... little kids running around etc. The only issue I have with the "L" is when you focus from near to far or vice versa. There is a lot of glass that needs to be moved... so... although you can shoot fast moving subjects... it lacks the zip of the F/1.8 from changing focusing distances. If you can swing it... own both. Having images sharp down to F/1.2 is pretty amazing... and it only gets better from there. :)

Hope this helps.
Hatch

It's a stellar lens IMO... SUPER sharp... bokeh is great.. color/contrast are wonderful.

It really is slow... that combined with shooting at f/1.2 makes getting focus where you want it tricky... shooting my 2 year old and my 4 year old goddaughter resulted in a pretty low keeper rate, but the ones that hit were awesome!

newworld666
10th of March 2011 (Thu), 22:48
Don't worry, AF is slow from MFD to Infinity, but luckily your children will never run that fast too.... Even Usain Bolt won't  .
In real life, you must mainly get trained to keep one AF point on one eye of your moving child (if you like to play with ultra thin DOF) and get a decent speed (1/800 to 1/2000 can really freeze subject) ..

For my pleasure, I play sometimes with thin DOF and dogs (which are much more erratic than children and faster too)
http://photos.corbi.eu/Pets/2011-01-16-Attention-chiens/15468050_dz62T

85L's AF is one of the most accurate, and if you use F1.2 at a correct distance from the subject or use the correct aperture with the thickness of you subject (for less than 2 meters subject F2.0-2.8 is mainly interesting to get both eyes in focus). From 5 meters to 15meters you won't be out of focus assuming you get trained to track your subject, AF is ultra fast in this range, at least like my 135L (but much more accurate than 135L, DOF is also 34% thinner at 135/2.0 than at 85/1.2 for 10meters  of course subject is much smaller too with 85L).

Again with dogs in an agility show (DOF was not a problem and AF could track them without any trouble)
http://photos.corbi.eu/Other/Canon-85L12II-Dog-Show/12889317_6hTGt

Now with faster subject, AI servo is working perfectly (These quad bikes are at around 100km/h).
http://photos.corbi.eu/Other/Canon-EF-85L12II-Sport/15640581_aERTf

In really dark situations no trouble too (135F2.0's AF was really hunting so I didn't use it after a while)
http://photos.corbi.eu/Other/Canon-EF-85L12II-Dancing/15835686_3Stme
http://photos.corbi.eu/Other/85L12II-low-light-sports/13672968_cnPAL

Family usage is probably the most simple
http://photos.corbi.eu/Other/Canon-85mm-L-12II/12475216_Dm65v

So in short :
-> get trained to focus to be able to track on a very small part of a subject (eyes) as long as necessary (85L will never be faulty). It's more difficult with outer AF points but possible (don't forget that 85L is ultra sharp in the center)
-> use the correct speed to freeze the subject (1/320 is really a minimum and 1/800-1/1000 more suitable) don't forget that relative angle speed is faster when subject is very near.
-> use the correct aperture when you are with a less than 5 meters subject. F1.2 is really more challenging to focus on the right part of the subject (eyes).
-> forget to jump from MFD to infinity  .. maybe for basket ball, you will be obliged to track one player and not jump from one player to another.
-> give you a decent time to learn how to use 85L (it took me months) and don't try to compare 85L and 85F1.8 they must be used in different way.

Actually, 85L became my second tool for action / sports, just behind 300L2.8 and before 135L and 24LII (of course because sharpness, colors and micro contrast are amazing) .

captevo

WOW, Thanks newworld666, Markitos, Hatch1921.
So that's what they were talking about when they said it's slow.
If that's the case, I'm fine with it. Like you said the kids won't be running from end to end that fast.
Now, I'm just waiting for Canon refurb to go back in stock (it was in stock few days ago but I couldn't pull the trigger then). :(

I just recently received this lens. Bought it new but 2nd hand. The first owner had bought it but never used it. I have some questions: I heard the autofocus is slow so I expected that but I didn't expect this lens to hunt constantly. I just put it on my 1D4 for some test shots and it is hunting constantly for focus with center point focusing (all I tried). Secondly, the focus ring doesn't seem to have any damping like all my other lenses. It is almost free-wheeling and even has a little lateral play in it. Can you give me some feedback asap as to whether this is normal? Thanks!

Candersson
11th of March 2011 (Fri), 16:32
Well, it shouldn't hunt unless you are in low light.
The non-damp focus ring is a constructed. I can feel a little play as well.

dog rocket
11th of March 2011 (Fri), 16:35
Hmmm... it was hunting constantly aiming at either one of my dogs outside and sunny. One is black but it really had a problem with my brown dog focused on her eye. In fact, it was hunting more often than not on objects around the yard.

Candersson
11th of March 2011 (Fri), 16:46
Hard to say what's normal or not...
You had it set to one shot and the target was non-moving... still hunting?
...no offence, just had to ask to be sure ;)

It's hard to say -- I've shot with the 85 on my 5D Classic in various conditions and get good results, although I've learned how to "work with" different conditions, but as far as a big "hunting" problem I don't struggle all the time with that, just a little. And I use outer focus points all the time so I don't know why you are struggling with the center point. But I don't ever use this thing in AI Servo to track objects that are moving with any speed -- I'd have to try that with my 1D3 but I don't want to invite grief:)!

I'm really not sure. I toggled the AF switch back and forth and removed the lens and re-assembled it and the problem seems to have mysteriously disappeared. Thank you for your quick responses. Anyway lots of doggie pics without fail this time.

Edit: I feel foolish taking a whole page for a non-issue in a lens sample thread so I'm going to go back and clean up a few posts. Hope you don't mind.

DODGE and BURN..

wow.. just learned how to do it last night.. OMG it makes such a difference..

just shows you how much photography now is about a good file and good post work

layers

1 50 percent grey blend mode to overlay to darken (use burn tool)
2 50 percent grey blend mode to softlight to lighten (use dodge tool)
3 average color cast inverted to correct white balance
4 overlay high pass @ 2 pix to bring back the edges
5 original with shoulder tan lines corrected
6 original with skin blemished corrected

That's because they want you to upgrade to a 1D body... 85L's AF is not slow when used on a 1D.

For what is 85L slow  .... I still don't understand what it means  to be used in a shop or in real life ?

In real life, it's working like a charm in my case.

I used it so often on a 5D MKII and 50D for action/sport, job/family I never felt to be more difficult than my 135L ..

 When does it happen from MFD to Infinity  ... in real life it's useless  ...
Dogs, Usain Bolt, Motor bikes, no one can be faster than my 85L to go from Infinity to MFD ... It should be a good challenge to find something that my 85L can't track ;) ...

But what is sure is that 85L has got a reputation of really accurate AF, and sigma 85F1.4 almost really random/lotery. It needs between 2 and 3 samples before getting a working one, and mostl often still needs a significant micro focus adjustment ...

One reason is you are pushing a massive chunk of glass around. The Sigma is a newer lens and is only f1.4 not as much glass and newer technology.

LOL it's only slow if you need to focus from minimum focusing distance to say 30 ft... lots of glass to move. It's a killer lens.. just finished a session about an hour ago... shot with the 85l 99% of the shoot. It's awesome!

85L is a telephoto lens ...
The focus is just what it is. This lens is made for portraits so I don't see why people are so obsessed with focusing fast or not. If you want a lens that focuses fast get the 70-200L. This lens has a lot of glass to move so yes it will focus a little slower then other lenses.

Shot the Amelia Cooncours D'Elegance (http://www.ameliaconcours.org/) event for a company based in Seattle, eGarage. Event was fun and awesome. So many breathtaking cars. Cars that range way back to old race cars, to old steam engines, Mopar, new exotics, etc. 15,000 Plus people in attendance.

Question for the owners of this lens... (Mine arrives Thursday)

I know the 85 II has slower AF speed, but in low light, is it RELIABLE?

My Sigma 30 was terrible in low light... Not only slow, but inaccurate. As long as the Canon can deliver on accuracy, I will be very happy. My 24-105 f/4 focused faster than the Sigma at f/1.4...

Thanks!

Now that would be something of a personal preference.
What is low light, slow and what is inaccurate. Probably different for all of us.
At f/1.2 you get as much light as you get, and then it would be up to the AF sensor to be as accurate as possible.

I have to say that I haven't found that to be the case - in the situations I have been in... ;)
Still a happy camper!

Invertalon
15th of March 2011 (Tue), 17:43
I am talking low light, not complete darkness. My 24-105L and 70-200 II do just fine in this regard, hitting focus almost each time (I would guess 80% hit rate). My 50 f/1.8 even does a great job in the same light.

My sigma was a different story. It could be totally OOF and confirm focus in similar light. Sometimes it would nail it, but many times it just had no clue.

I just want it to be reliable... But from my experience, the Canon lenses are in low light versus any 3rd party. So I probably should not be too concerned :)

Thanks!

Pair it with a flash on your hot shoe. AF assist. Zing.

Hatch- I love her expression and eye contact, very nice pic. I'd like to see a pic of her where her shoulders aren't straight on with the camera

Lovely captures, Jerrick... Lighting is spot on... Wonderful colors and bokeh... Good stuff... Keep'em coming...

:)

PS. And you've got a witty watermark, too... "Litrato by Jerrick"... AHhahahhaha.. Classic...
