^ Agreed. I often try to include the sun in a corner of the picture, but dang it's hard to induce flare with these L lenses some times. ;)
Seconded.
The only thing I can really fault this forum on is the emphasis of technical rather than creative. Then again I believe the majority of the members to be highly intellectual males and that may have something to do with it! ;)

I was scoping these shots last night on your blog. Dude, they are crazy beautiful. I'm going to buy this lens as soon as I can afford it. Until then, I go into my next wedding with the 50mm f/1.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS--that is, unless Canon makes the 35mm f/1.4L available again; it's currently on backorder. Lame! I think that, in the future, I'll likely end up photographing weddings with primarily the 35mm f/1.4L and the 85mm f/1.2L II. I don't think I'd need anything else, really . . .
Again, awesome work!
Yeah, now that I have a Suby that I actually want to mod, it's hard finding $ amidst the camera gear  Cobb TBE or 45 TS-E? I love the JDM fogs on your STI, btw. Wish there was some those size for the 06/07's.

I like the flare, in that picture, and in many pictures. Technical perfection is boring.

That's fair enough, I've even used the odd soft-focus filter in my time, but there are much cheaper ways of getting that effect than by using the 85mm f/1.2!
I'm certainly not looking for technical perfection, but I don't like what are effectively lens errors intruding on what I see when I want to photograph a scene. That's me, but we're all different and I for one am thankful for that.

Ah Mark, sorry if we all jumped on you. My statements were made more in jest than anything I hope you took it that way.
I think we can all agree that flare is jsut another element of the composition that either should or shouldn't be in a shot and not left to 'luck'. Failing which there's always Photoshop! ;)

Both excellent points. Flare IS technically a lens "flaw" but there's no reason it can't be used creatively. There are also ways around it most of the time; recompose the shot, block the light with your "free hand" just out of view, crop it out, etc. With the excellent lenses we have available, it really can be hard to induce flare when you want it. But if you can't help it, go with the flow and use it... :)

Thanks man! It's well worth it. And you really could shoot a wedding with just the 35L and 85L. I do bust out the 70-200 for ceremonies, but that's about it. You'll love it when you get it!
Mark, sorry too if it seemed like I was getting uppity with you :) It totally depends what you're going for. If you don't want flare, it's annoying, but if it's totally intentional in a shot, then it's good. But sometimes I wish I had cheaper lenses so I could get more flare ... the L's resist it too well, haha.

This shot (as well as the other three) is gorgeous! Did you enhance the look of the bokeh by using some sort of textured layer or something here? It just looks so surreal.

I actually like the flare as I believe it adds a window like view to the photograph.
alright. i was just clarifying.
I have noticed that the 85L does exhibit more lens flare than my other L primes, though I like to think that it adds to its personality :)
i was under the impression the 85mm 1.2L had excellent flare control, even without it's hood. maybe i was wrong.
i'll have to buy one and find out. :)

you get a separate texture image (for example, a concrete wall with mould on it) and add it to the photo as an overlay blend mode layer, or use soft light, then reduce the opacity until it looks right, then mask out areas you want clear

i'm not even going to bother straying this thread off-topic.
i decided that i will be ordering this lens in the direct future (this week hopefully). seeing as portraiture and wedding work is in my future, i see no alternative that promises the consistency and precision this gem will.
i only wish it was weather-sealed. i have not tried the "fly by wire" MF ring (hopefully it's light years beyond the "fly by wire" MF ring on my Powershot Pro1), but if that's a drag, then the damped mechanical MF ring will be something else i'll miss.
i've been subscribed to this thread since i've been a member of this forum. it's about time i contributed to it.

The 1v is actually almost identical to the 1d. The shape of the lower grip area and body is slightly different but overall size is the same. This practically identical layout is why I like the combo so much; there's no "adjustment" going from body-to-body.
As for the 85mm focal length on a 1.3x it's a touch long for me in my studio, which is why I picked up the 50L to compliment it when I need a little more in the frame (head vs. head/shoulders). Outdoors though where you have a little more room it's a real peach! I find the 24-70mm great for the studio but prefer primes when I can.

Hehehe. Go for it! :p
If you want to save a little money, you can pick up the Mark I for very reasonable prices. IMO, you're not missing *that* much by not getting the Mark II. The differences between the two are very subtle. AF isn't a speed demon on either lens, though yes, the Mark II is a bit faster. The Mark II has rounded aperture blades, which helps the bokeh especially on OOF highlights, but wide open you won't notice the difference anyway (not until you start stopping down, the highlights stay rounder, longer).

I consider this one but i hesitate on a 40D. Is the sensor big enough ?
The focal length is long... Maybe i'll take the 50L (cheaper !)
But 50L is not as sexy as 85L
And wich one is the fastest ?

a) Sensor is fine, b) 50mm might be better on 40D, c) they're both sexy, d) 50mm focuses faster, both are just as fast aperture wise, though you'll need a higher shutter speed with the 85mm.

I'm not going to argue that there's no "focus shift" or that some lenses are badly calibrated from the factory... There's no floating element in the 50L so of course there will be some focus shift under a tiny range of conditions - but IMO it's blown way out of proportion and I know it doesn't effect my shots any. As for the latter, worse comes to worse send it to Canon for a free calibration under warranty.
That all having been said, I love the 50L - and rate it almost as highly as the 85L - the bokeh is extraordinary, on par with the 85L. The colors, sharpness, saturation and contrast are all top-notch. Bonus is typical MF action, not "fly-by-wire" and weathersealing. What other prime gives you f/1.2 that's weathersealed? None...
Full disclosure; I bought mine second-hand and the previous owner had it calibrated by Canon. I have no idea how it performed before other than slight front/backfocus. All I know is I pushed it to expose the focus shift; it works FINE. In fact I shot specifically testing the 50L at every range and aperture in REAL WORLD conditions and it performed beyond expectations. I love mine, no reservations.

What i'm looking for is great bokeh and fast USM. I think the 85L is better than 50L on that point. But FredMiranda users said that 85L is a bit slow. Do they expect it to be the fastest lens on earth ??
Of course, great bokeh is good for portrait but what i really like to do is that 3D effect created by the 85L that allow you to capture a total subject on a total blured background. I just think that 50L is not able to do this as well.

Bah. Both lenses are f/1.2 and have nine rounded aperture blades. So the big difference is the focal length and by that alone the 85mm "technically" has less DoF (more background blur) than the 50mm, but that can be compensated for by increasing subject to background distance or camera to subject distance with the 50mm. Even sensor size can be utilized to a degree to achieve the effect you want (though it's really just juggling variables). So there's nothing magical about the 85mm here. The 50L can do this just as well and the bokeh is extremely nice.
As for AF speed, the 50L is faster than the 85L. Neither are the fastest in the stable. In fact the 85mm f/1.8 is faster than the 85 f/1.2L and it's not an L!
So I have to disagree on both counts. Sorry. :p
As for that "pop" you can do that quite easily with either lens... Set aperture to about f/1.8, get your subject at 10' and snap away. Even the 85mm f/1.8 can do this, albeit wide open - and thus not as sharply.

-resize 6x4 300dpi
-new curves layer, increase contrast of green and red channels(slight S curve), increase blue in the shadows and decrease blue in the highlights.
-adjust levels, contrast and exposure according to the image
-new layer-saturation, decrease saturation according to taste
-new layer-exposure, decrease exposure and mask the subject using black colour to create vignette
-adjust colours, hue, wb, burn highlights, etc according to the mood of the photo.
-sharpen to taste. :)
the bokeh and some of the lovely vignette comes free w the lens. ;)

Interesting, sure - I'm game.
You want the same framing, or the same distance? That is - do you want to compare FoV, or bokeh?

I think the 85 would fit better in your lens lineup. The 50 is too close to the 35, IMO.

Cant WAIT! I have a wedding this weekend (my first) and I wont rely on it as i want to be comfortable using my gear and not mess up anyshots. But i gaurantee i WILL be using it this weekend!
I have the 135L but think i might sell it with the 85L... I dont see much advangtage for what i shoot.. weddings, engagements and portraits...
with my 40D i can get the 135 focal length and with the 5d use it at 85...

has anyone rn into difficulties with max aperture to much for the max shutter speed?
in daylight or sunlight would iso 50 be slow enough for f1.2 shots?
if not would a polarizer bring it down enough or will i need an nd filter ( i do have an nd8 77mm and a stepdown ring)
I would tes myself but its in transit! :)

Yeah, you could run into trouble trying to shoot at f/1.2 in bright sunlight. I bought a 3 stop ND filter for such occasions. :) Polarizer could help too, most soak up about 1.5 stops of light.

1/8000 is the fastest shutter speed on a 5D, so I don't know if you're agreeing with me or disagreeing.
A 3 stop ND would bring that shot down around 1/1000 which would give you a little more leeway if you had any brighter highlights in the shot.

What i mean to say was I was at 1/8000th at bright sunlight and still didn't have to kick it down to ISO50. So I had a bit of room to play with still.

These are my 5d out of camera
I tried it on my 40d and the bokeh was only about half as good? is this me. i tried it on different shots etc. will have to do a comparison but has anyone noticed the bokeh with 5D is TOTALLLLLY not just marginally better....

Why resist....a bike's a good substitute for a car but there's no substitute for this lens.

What an awesome lens. I think it should aptly be renamed "The Black Hole", since no light escapes it!

I notice in a lot of the shots the OOF highlights are truncated. Not sure if anyone knows what I'm talking about but imagine a circular OOF highlight, but with a side cut off. I've noticed that in a lot of the shots, is there a reason this happens?
Not sure I can type it but it looks like this:

instead of () if that makes sense...lol

It's because of obstruction of some light by the camera mirror-box itself. The aperture is circular in the centre of the image, but when wide open, or nearly so, more oblique rays are cut off by physical obstructions. If it's just the lens body then you'll get the () shape (a lozenge, not a circle), but if it's the body mirror-box, you can get (] shapes. Narrower apertures are progressively less affected.

Ah thanks, makes sense! Does this suggest that sometimes it's better not to use a hood to avoid obstructing these light rays? Any other prevention techniques?

I've never heard of the hood causing any problems, so I don't think it's better left off.

I have no idea what a lens hood has to do with the mirror box - unless you're trying to mount the lens backwards, with the lens hood on! ;) :D
