I'm finally getting some opportunities to use the new-to-me 5D and 85L II. They make one sweet combo!

sorry i haven't had time to post anything..

in between weddings right now and working with a contractor on getting a new home right now.. it is taking so much of my time..

but the theme on this one is great.. nina going green because the lighting on this was all solar powered (reflector used).. thus not using anything other than that.. pretty simple eh?

thank you all. these are from a group photoshoot. the organizer brought a very very large (at least 10 ft) reflector and placed it on the left side of the model. my shots were taken at either at f1.2 or f1.4. used a 3-stop ND filter as the shots are overexposed without it, the shutter speed were from 1/1600 to 1/2000. i guess that's about it.

Just delivered, and WOW. This lens wide open on my 5Dc is insane. Probably sharper than my 70-200 II at f/1.2 than my 70-200 wide open... The fringing is bad in bright light, but I can look beyond that.

LOVE it. Out of the box, spot on focus. And the focus is not as slow as I expected. Quick enough for most, IMO.

The focus threw me off though, how the hood spins with the focus ring when you MF. I never read about that so I thought something was wrong with my lens :D

Pretty sure this was my PLM. It could of been the soflighter, but pretty sure I used the PLM on Yanice. I did use the softlighter on Cori Anne's last photo though on the tree.

Thank you, guys! I keep forgetting that AB offers a diffusion sock. I have a cheap amazon PLM (smaller) that I haven't quite figured out when to use yet!

Ditto on the setup shot. These shots remind me that I should master one light setups before I start getting into multiple lights! Ryan shows how elegant of a shot you can make with only one light. Thanks again.

I must say this lens does not disappoint in the dark. In very low light it locks right on... Miles better than the Sigma 30 I had, no comparison.

Simply awesome on the 5D, but my 7D needs a bit of MA, like most of my lenses which all seem to front focus. But I'll narrow that down in the next few days.

Performance is simply awesome. Stopped down to f/1.8 or f/2 become deathly sharp, and the bokeh of course is wonderful.

Will be an amazing lens, I just need to get it MA'd to my 7D now... I really like using this lens on both bodies, not just the 5D like many people swear by. Awesome on both crop and FF!

Oh, and I bought this as a refurb from Canon and it looks perfect. Not one thing looks different from new.

I actually really like this. I love the idea, I may just steal it one day :D

I would probably get a closer crop on the person if possible and/or place the items on a surface that matches the scene of the portrait. I still like how your photo came out but if I had to be picky those would be the things I would change.

Zerimar
18th of March 2011 (Fri), 02:22
I agree with that.

The wood background was the base of what was behind him (it was like a water tank of some sort)

I tried cropping closer on the person and it didn't seem right

Thanks for the input!

DigiNon
18th of March 2011 (Fri), 02:32
No problem. I hope to see more of these from you!

Now that I think about it, maybe if he would have been sitting/leaning near the water tank then it would make it easier to identify that the wood surface actually is part of that scene. You know what I mean? But I know I would have never thought about that while taking the pics lol. I always figure out how I could have done a better job on the shot AFTER I open them in my pc lol.

So, I'd say you need to somehow tie the relationship between the two images more closely together. Otherwise it just becomes "two pictures"...right? So find a way of a common theme or element that makes them share...not just that the fact that the guy has liprings means he has gadgets:)!

This lens does really nice Servo... It hit every single shot of this train I had moving at 40mph+ on my 5Dc. I had about six or seven images in total, all extremely sharp. I did not think it would since everybody talks of how slow its AF is... When I took them I figured they would probably not be focused. Fooled me!

Evelyn and Joe were off to a fast start... i mean fassssst...

we went to the top of my fav parking garage just after the wedding to do this shot..

Joey was like hey.. Pham.. you want to race? i was in my outback.. haha..

Cayenne Turbo

The 1st generation Cayenne Turbo had 450 horsepower (340 kW), and accelerated from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 5.3 seconds. A Turbo S version was built in 2006 to compete with the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG. The Cayenne Turbo S included a low-range case, a locking differential, and the height-adjustable, off-road suspension also standard on the regular Turbo model. It was powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.5-liter V8 that produced 520 bhp (390 kW) and 700 Nm (520 lbft) of torque. Acceleration from 060 mph (96 km/h) was 5.0 seconds and the top speed was 171 miles per hour. It featured a 6-speed automatic Tiptronic transmission.
A new Turbo was revealed at the 2008 Beijing auto show. It received 50 hp (37 kW) more power, and now accelerated from 060 mph (96 km/h) in 4.9 seconds. Also revealed with the new Turbo was a new 550 horsepower (410 kW) Turbo S. Acceleration from 060 mph is 4.7 seconds and has optional ceramic composite brakes.

Hi, I didn't actually use strobes for this shot, it was actually sunlight passing through the trees. I picked this spot so that it would have lighted up the athlete's passing through to the next transition area. Will definitely be trying out strobing for the next event though.

Truth be told, you're a primary reason why I have the 35L and 85L. Your work speaks for itself and you accomplishing the lighting without the aid of a light meter makes it all that more impressive. I'm thankful that you're the sharing type to help better those who want to learn...such as myself. Setup shots and the explanation of how you achieve your shots are very helpful. Keep doing what you're doing.

Molly Model ~ The Red Brick Road

this was a fun shoot for molly, the model that started my career.. she was photographed by both Myself and Ryan O Hicks that night.. oh so long ago..

this was the night Ryan O Hicks used the radio poppers for the first time i think..

here is the video i did for Ryan O Hicks shot..
www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=394941338356

and after wards, i wanted to do just one shot for me...

this shot was lighted by the radio poppers px system in a westcott 28x28 box.. boomed by Nick..

the cross red lighting was gelled on a 580EXII @ 1/32 power i think..

being it was pitch dark, i always find some ambient light to balance the photo out..

the westcott was boomed about 6-8 feet camera right 8 feet or so up..

Molly Model ~ The Red Brick Road

this was a fun shoot for molly, the model that started my career.. she was photographed by both Myself and Ryan O Hicks that night.. oh so long ago..

this was the night Ryan O Hicks used the radio poppers for the first time i think..

here is the video i did for Ryan O Hicks shot..
www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=394941338356 (http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=394941338356)

and after wards, i wanted to do just one shot for me...

this shot was lighted by the radio poppers px system in a westcott 28x28 box.. boomed by Nick..

the cross red lighting was gelled on a 580EXII @ 1/32 power i think..

being it was pitch dark, i always find some ambient light to balance the photo out..

the westcott was boomed about 6-8 feet camera right 8 feet or so up..

Smokin shot Pham. You should invest in a 200 f/2.

I agree. If it ever reaches print I will. I also have another spot I'd like to work on as well.
Was a pretty quick edit before bed last night. I saw it after I had already uploaded it.

This lens continues to blow me away... Its sharpness at f/1.2 is outstanding! I did some "rainy day" shooting around the yard and this lens can turn any light into great light... I can't wait to use this lens more and more with spring and summer finally on its way!

Sadly, I already have my first dust behind my front element after only a week :( Nature of the beast... I am sure it will get much worse, but I have two free check/cleans from CPS I can use when it gets really bad! (Yes, I know dust does little to nothing to degrade IQ!). The only thing that would make this lens better would be to give it dust/water resistance like many other L's.

Here are a few images from today... All shot wide open.

What do you mean by accidentally take a focal point?

This lens has an excellent keeper rate for me at f/1.2... Where I want to focus it locks on and most of the time I hit the mark. It is not as difficult to shoot wide open like I have read!

I imagined I've posted these here sometime in the past, but some of these shots brought them to mind, an it can be fun to do a refresh:)!

Back in March of '08 I did an exercise with this lense on my 5D Classic to show the transition from shooting at f/2.8 to f/1.2 and I thought it was kind of cool:

f/2.8

f/1.8

f/1.4

And, f/1.2

I thought they were nice illustrations!

I'll work out using the 70-200 f2.8 II.

The lens I wish weighed a little more is the 135 F2, I think it would give me a little more stability, I'm having problems shoot it at less than 1/320.

agreed with the 135L being light weight.. the 85L with a gripped camera body has perfect stability

enjoy yours !

Katlyn is a finalist for "America's Next Top Model" tv show.
