Im not sure you guys are into the Video end of your camera, but I have to tell you, the wire focus design that allows me to spin the focus ring with the whisp of light touch is an unbeatable match for manual focus on video. It seems I don't have to do any work, just use one finger to track my subjects focus so smoothly. Using my other lens' manual focus takes work to stay in focus with the subject since the focus ring is so firm.
I didn't think I would get used the 85's wire focus, now, especially with Video, its the very first lens I grab...without a doubt.

One day Allen. After my lust for Leica glass dies off. ;)
Theres very few lenses in the Canon stable that can run with Leica M glass. Once you get used to seeing that look, its hard to go back.
So did the M9 come yet?

So are you saying that it may not be a bum lens? I need to put power to it for it work? I'm not sure I ever heard of such a thing but with that much glass, it makes sense now. I'll try it when I get home from work I guess.
Edit: Yep...it needs power to manual focus!! What an idiot!! I would have never thought!! Even the Canon tech told me the lens was bad and apologize as if he was the one that made it!! OK...no more stupid posts...I'm leaving with my head hung low!!
lol maybe we should add this to some 85L sticky? I got mine delivered to work as well but didn't tell anyone cause I didn't want to get hassled for spending that kinda of money on a lens to people who have no interest in cameras/photography.

Anyways, enough about Leica. Let's get back to the 85 L images! :)

Thanks Kenny for the summary!! How I wish I would have come here or even just read the e-manual before making the call to Newegg telling them it wasn't functioning properly!! I could be out there right now shooting away!! Instead...it sits in the original shipping box waiting to go back for repairs it doesn't need!! I even tried calling Newegg to tell them I'm an idiot and to call back the shipment, but since it has already shipped, there is nothing they can/will do about it. The lady even apologized for my troubles...troubles??? It was a total lack of knowledge and she's apologizing to me...gotta love that!!
Anyway, it'll be over tomorrow and then I can move on to some play time...can't wait!! Thanks again to everyone that set me straight...again!! :D
I set my 5d2 on back button focus. While leaving the AF switch to on, I can just spin the ring and focus manually, hit the shutter when ready. Or hold the focus button and let the AF do it's job, hit the shutter when ready.

Yeah, a little clarity here, to fill in the "quirks"...
The lens needs to be attached and powered to MF at all.
The lens features "Full Time Manual Focus" but only in two conditions: if you are using the shutter button to focus, it has to be half-pressed to manual focus if the AF is on. But if you move focus to the rear button, you can MF at any time.
Clear as mud:)?

I've had this lens for 2 months now, and haven't done anything other than test shots in the apartment. But seeing shots like these are kicking me in the pants to get out there and start shooting.
I haven't had much practice with mine (with people) until tonight at photography class, which makes you feel like a n00b when you actually start to shoot people with it.

Jon, If you like a solid incredibly built camera void of the bells and whistles that most DSLRs have well here check out what a devoted Canon owner had to say about it. And the Leica M glass. Only a few of Canons very finest primes come close. Well, give this a good read.

No.

JCW would be nice, but it's an extra 7 grand for a big brake kit and 20 more HP. Not worth it IMO and I didn't have the money for it.

 the happy winner of a dog show .... I was astonished that with such hard sun, colours could still be so rich (even if some CA are present in the most contrast situations @f1.2 iso 100 1/640).
I will never quit this marvellous lens, I was thinking FD 85L1.2 was more usable than EF, but for colours richness there is a big improvement with EF version.

Ya, my dad has had 2 of these. Not the fastest car I've driven, but quick and super fun (I've been reminded recently that the fastest car available isn't always the most fun to drive with my cars also). I never thought I'd have so much fun driving a FWD car, but I got hooked. I took his newer one on a 2500 mile trip around the US and average 38mpg for the whole trip.
And even though people pick on them for being small, it easily has as much or more room than my Jeep Wrangler does, and is comfortable as long as you don't prefer 1990's Lincoln-type suspension.
Congrats on the new ride.

Yeah, the white border doesn't work there. It is a bit overexposed, but I kind of like it that way. Maybe desaturate the trees a bit to compensate on the brightness.

They have plenty of room in them. Granted all cars have limits, but it should still fit all my gear in it. I have yet to test it out, but I don't have much doubt on the majority of my stuff.

LOL The white border goes on all my images... it may work better on some than others... but the intent is to have my logo on there so when the client puts these on Facebook or emails them out... they know where to go to shoot with us. :)
The sky in the top right is clipped... everything else is fine.. the working off a calibrated monitor.

that is a fun car to drive.. i have had the chance to drive one for the weekend in 2005 and it exceeded my expectations.. at that time i owned a 2003 WRX and i was thinking in track race, the mini handled better, braked better and excellerated just fine..
now your going to have to design a cargo organizer for your AB1600 and stands, maybe lay the passenger seat down and make that side the flat side to lug cargo around?
get some 20percent tint on that! don't know what the laws in Florida are?

Thanks! It's my first official "new" car that i've been able to buy.
20% is coming. I had 20% on the neon and the other neon before it ;) 20% is like the perfect light level IMO. I am not aware of the tint laws either, but I didn't get hassled with the neon here so I don't think it'll be much of a problem.
I've also already ordered a 2" shorty radio antenna to get rid of that RC car look lol. Not sure why they made it so big on such a small car. Also ordered a stiffer BOV spring which will allow more boost pressure in my tubes. Keeps my shifts more smoother, and a little less turbo lag.
The two rear seats fold down flat to allow more space. So I should be able to fit the equipment in that way. The 2011 models are quicker then the 05s. I'm sure driving one of the newer ones would feel much more solid then the one you drove, but yes very fun cars! All while getting 35MPG, which is perfect seeing as i drive 70 miles round trip everyday.

Ya, I drove the older supercharged model and then my dad had the newer turbo model. The turbo model has great torque even down low and pulls harder. I was a little unsure of the drivability when they switched to a turbo (being on such a small engine), but it was definitely a good change (and much easier to tune!).

It's interesting. I keep looking back between this thread, the Sigma 85/1.4 thread, the 85/1.8 thread, and the Zeiss 100/2 thread. The only lens I can tell apart from shots alone is the Zeiss. The Sigma and Canons both produce basically the same images (in my opinion). Anyone have any exquisite 85/1.2 shots showing off the 1.2's color or DoF? I'm having trouble justifying it over the Zeiss or Sigma.

inspiration from my friend Cory Nguyen photo.. with a twist....
also this photo was made during my first Lighting Work Shop..
During the work shop we covered many topics including lighting, posing and how to deal with real live shooting sessions.. and ever changing conditions..
this shot was done at the parking garage being it stormed thru the whole session..
this was my first work shop and i my self learned some things about creating a curriculum
lighting on this was 3 lights
1. Rear Camera Left was AB1600 with 60 Softlighter with yellow Gel @ 1/2 power
2. Rear Camera Right was single 430 Speed light @ 1/4 power with Blue Gel
3. Key light was Elinchrom Quadra with Deep Octa about 5 feet camera left @ 1.5 power
all lights but the Elinchrom was triggered by the Consistent firing Cactus V5's

I did several shots of the grandgirls and their mother yesterday, using the Canon 5D2 and the 85mm L II.
My eyes must be getting old because it is hard for me to get the focus right. This example is fine on the dresses, but less sharp at the eyes. However, when I did get the eyes right, especially in tight individual head and shoulders shot, I had too-well defined zits showed up on one girl. My choices, then are for the ambiance rather than sharpness. I suspect I would have done better at f2 or 2.8 and still lost the distracting background I was trying to eliminate.
Another difficulty is getting my screen color to match what is displayed on the web site. Time for another calibration, Sigh...
