Lauren Senior ~ The Tall Grass Beauty
One of my Favs from Lauren's portfolio..
the action of her running and the fabric (10 feet of tulle material) just makes this magical for me...
Lauren loves nature so hopefully we capture her fun smile and the beauty of the tall grass and the midwestern warm glow..
lighting was a single AB1600 at about 1/3 power with a 22 inch Beauty dish
we had father stand in the focus sweet spot and then i locked on focus, then Lauren came running down the grass and gave us shot !
ND filters were used to get the 2.0 with shutter sync at 1/200
triggered by the Consistent firing Cactus V5's

 .. you have to understand how this lens is working before being able to use it ;) ... Focusing is strictly not linear ! ..
It seems slow, but ultra precise between 90cm to 3 meters, so don't forget that DOF can be potentially ultra thin within these distances (comparable to macro shots). So, other lenses may feel faster => they are mostly inconsistent (sigma F1.4) while 85L is really accurate even with 1 or 2 cm DOF.
In real life, who use AF with a macro DOF range ? Canon gives a good tool for it, it slower but accurate.
Then => focusing time is strictly comparable as 135L between 3 meters to infinity !! but who shot sports between 90cm to 3 meters ? ... so Canon is giving a marvellous tool even to shot sport with fast and ultra accurate AF ...
Once more, I will put same links with Canon AF catching and tracking with blazing fast subject (comparing to Michael Jordan or Usain Bolt, these subjects are 3 to 5 times faster) ..
So, I have tons of pictures of erratic movement of quadbikes, dogs, dancers ..
Nearly none where out of focus

Yes compared to the 85 / 1.8 it focusses slower... but I think it all depends on the lens - body combination on my 1Ds MKII it focusses still pretty fast... at least fast enough for portraiture even in low light...

For sports between 3m to infinity, focusing of 85F1.8 is not really faster ! I own a 135L which is considered as a fast AF lens, I don't see any major difference between 85L and 135L between 3m to infinity .

Is that on your mark II or the 1D? Cause the AF on both of them is different right? From what I remember the Mark II is much slower in AF all around with almost any lens that you slap on that sucker! :P

My samples are mostly with 5DMKII and 50D.
I just got 2 weeks ago a 1D MKIII. But, with centre focus point, I can already say there is no difference between the 3 bodies ...
Right now, I am studying 1DMKIII AF system, and after understanding a bit more 1D MKIII AF options (3 parameters to settle for each action/sport situations), I start to control outer focus points with more efficiency and I get much better results with 1D than 50D or 5D MKII.
These are two samples issued from tracking dogs running yesterday with upper focus points (FullHD size by clicking on pictures)..
http://photos.corbi.eu/Other/Canon-1D-MKIII-EF85L12II/i-MWSTWwd/0/XL/B0P0131-copie-XL.jpg (http://photos.corbi.eu/Other/Canon-1D-MKIII-EF85L12II/i-MWSTWwd/0/O/B0P0131-copie-O.jpg)

With these sequences 100% of the 2 times 10 pictures where correctly focused.
But this has nothing to see with 85L speed, just interpretation of F1.2's DOF with is more accurate with 1D than 5DMKII and 50D (they are hunting, particularly with down focus points). I imagine 1D MKIII alows to be more approximative when tracking a head (Eyes), when there is no possibility to do it with 5DMKII and 50D => your tracking must be totally accurate with F1.2 lenses which is difficult (centre point is more permissive with more additional focus points) .

I don't know, you if you are expecting to use an 85mm on fullframe or on a apsc ... but, I am sure on any Canon APSC the Canon 85L1.2II won't give you any better IMO performance than Sigma 85F1.4..
As my own experience with 85L and 24L1.4II on 1D III and 50D, they are far behind 5DMKII in sharpness, I feel colours of 1D and 5D are even, but 50D more washed.
For AF, I never tried sigma 85mm ... I just own a sigma 24F1.8 which is really erratic, so we can't trust it and we use it mainly for MF ...

I completely agree! And that's where I'm really looking into things before I make a huge purchase. I mean I run around with a Mark II and a 7D, and most of the time the 7D has the Sigma, which the focus is usually pretty accurate with the random back focus every now and then. Colors seem the same on the mark II and the 7D, BUT I am going to be purchasing the mark iv by next year. SO like I said I'm just doing as much research as I can when it comes to gear, so I don't go broke for no reason LOL!

That would be because the tip of the barrel is no longer in the plane of focus, thus the OOF blur accentuates the CA.

This technique turns the "full frame" of the 35mm sensor in the 5D Mark II into a big medium format sensor, but even bigger than that! Still learning to master it. Shot about 12 pics of full 21MP RAW and stitched together..total size was crazy, over 150MB for the final picture! Used Autopanogiga to stitch

Cops in LA like to harrash photographers, you either pay expensive permit or shoot and move quick or stay away from the crowd and hopefully cops don't come around and lecture you about bs stuff like ... public safety, terrorists ... blah...blah...blah....

Yeah, so cops are avoidable. Act like you should be wherever you are and usually you won't get bothered... at least thats what works for me :p
Usually you can get away with stuff at the beach on weekdays.

with me standing in the corner up high on this tight space ledge, i had to do the multi shot (29 shots) to get this wide panoramic scene..

This brenzier method is taking off. I can imagine a few people looking into getting a gigapan!
Pham - did you find it difficult to take all of the photos required to piece together the final product? I haven't tried stitching yet, so I'm unfamiliar with how easy/difficult it is. I bet it helps to have a subject that can stay still. How long did it take you to take all of the required shots?
Great capture, by the way ;)

it is pretty easy.. you have to trust your self on this..
take the first shot of the couple in auto focus, then turn you lens to manual focus...
now take each shot with a little over lap... spiral around however you like..
this process takes maybe 20-30 seconds only.. i like to finish off with shooting the couple again just to make sure i have them from the beginning and ending..
now in photoshop it takes depending on your speed of your processor, 5 mins to 30 mins..
this 29 file merge took only 10 - 15mins for me..
go out and practice ! you have fun with it..
the psd file was 1 gig when finished.. crazy huge

Continuation of Lauren's senior images..
being she is an outdoor nature photographer, into wildlife photography and loves colors, we framed here with all of that.. add some studio lighting in the outdoors and you get this.. Lauren's Senior photos..
Credit goes to her father who spotted the flower patch in a turn about near the parking garage we parked in..
we found a small window of flowers that didn't have a distracting background and did some compositional studies before we brought out the lights.. (we had lauren go into the flower patch 3 different times and locations before we settled on this framing.. )
lighting was 1 speedlight bare with a blue gel taped at 1/8 power about 10 feet behind Lauren

Lilly Senior ~ The Golden Hour
working on Lilly's senior photos.
we framed Lilly with some green plants late in the golden hour..
front lighted her with an AB1600 with 22 inch beauty dish and the sun did the rest..
post work was my creative choice to make it dreamy golden
i used the ND filter to get the sync speeds for this one..
AB1600 was about 1/3 power camera right.. i slightly broad lighted Lilly..
triggered by the Consistent firing Cactus V5's
