No I meant incase the hood cuts off oblique light rays

but I don't know what I'm talking about anyway. In any case such an expensive lens requires mandatory usage of the hood I would think, even at the expense of IQ

Just got my 85 L today!

Sold off my 70-300 IS zoom as I wasn't really using it and decided my next move was to get this lens as it seemed like the right decision with a music festival shoot coming up in a couple of weeks and needed something for tighter portrait work.

I think I'm gonna like it! ;)

Here's a quick self portrait.

Cheers! :)

A couple of days ago, I had the great opportunity to photograph two great watchmakers Mr Vianney Halter and Mr Roger Smith. I took the opportunity to have them pose for me and I used my 5D and 85L Mk1 at the dinner event held in their honour.

Here is Roger Smith peering at a watch he made from scratch (he producces less than 20 pieces a year). He is based on Isle of Man UK.

Here is Vianny posing together with his daughter. Mr Halter makes the most ground breaking designs in high horology IMO.

Hi and thanks. That day I was using my new Profoto 7b lighting system, with a little fill in help from my 580exII.

#1
I used a 22" beauty dish with a grid for key up and left of the subject. To the right is a 580exII sitting inside a Photoflex mini softbox for fill.

#2
I believe that one was with a 580ex with a Honl grid up and left for key. Same 580exII/softbox combo for fill

#3
Another beauty dish setup like #1 but repositioned the model and lights a tad.

I rented the 85L for 2 weeks. I have been having fun playing!

5D+85L

These are all just my kids. I didn't trust the AF speed enough to actually use on a client shoot yet - since I have no experience with this lens other than renting it.

All the tutu ones of my daughter were taken wide open at f/1.2. The other candids were taken at f/1.6.

The eyes are perhaps slightly over saturated but nice images. How do you edit them?

It's just preference. I have worked for a long time to get my processing and style down, and it's just what I prefer. I have to admit - I do have clients who call me specifically and ask, "I want you to take my photos, can you be sure and do the thing you do to the eyes." Hmpf.

I don't do anything to the eyes specifically - no selective saturation or coloring of any kind. I don't even dodge the highlights for fear of making them even brighter than they already are. I do a LOT of overall editing to all of my photos generally speaking - but nothing selectively to make the eyes bluer other than my overall image processing (which does make the colors pop). I do get that question a lot though because my 3 kids (and I) have very vivid blue eyes.

Here's a brown eyed client with my same/usual processing. My kids just have very blue eyes and until you meet them in person, everyone says they can't believe how blue their eyes are.

Okay, I did it, I'm sitting here looking at my new 85 1.2 OMG is it sharp just playing around my apartment and so easy to play with the depth of field when it's that extreme wide open. What supprises me is how easy it is to see that sharpness for sure, I'll go out with it for testing in the late light today when the breezes calm down so I can do close up of plants as well as some general walk around and scenic. I've hesitated for over a year on this one and now I'm wondering if I want to sell my 24-105 which is crispy sharp but seldom use anymore and get the 135 f2 also. Just trying to figure what I'll use in the future, there was a time when I thought all I needed was the 24-105-oh well.

Tough choice, I have the 85 & the 135, and I've found that I don't use the 135 nearly as much as the 85. YMMV of course, and the 135 is a VERY nice lens, especially for the price, but for me its not quite as versatile as the 85.

winners! the first pug shot has some pretty good specular highlights. the winning point is the facial expression of the pup.

i hope the crop of my 1D III doesn't have too significant of an effect on the DoF dished out by this lens.

Nope. The only lighting was what the performers were holding. I used the 35L, 85L, 135L.

BUY IT!!

I've used it on the 400d & use it on the 40d and it's great on both. The 5d is in my opinion a significant step up in optical quality from the smaller sensor cameras and therefore makes all compatible lenses look better.

No I do not believe I've used an extension tube on the 85 1.2 yet. I would like to find a thinner one than my 12mm for it though, I don't know if they are made. Shooting something like those plants took a lot of different shots, getting to where everything was on the same focus plane because that lens at 1.2 barely has an inch of depth of field or even less depending on the distance. When your on, it's incredible, when your off, you delete.

I may have posted these earlier in this thread, don't remember. All of these were shot with the 85L MkII and some extension (didn't keep records on what extension tube I used).

bob_r, as long as it's sharp, why not? Keep it. Unless you need the money, to offset the cost of the L, I'd say hold on to your copy. Just something a little easier to carry, every so often.

I have the L, but am planning on buying the 1.8 for its fast AF performance and keeping the L for its great IQ performance. I see them as two different tools for different jobs, each excelling in its own way. Kinda like having a 5D and a 1DM3 as well.

Definitely happy with the lens and although ridiculously expensive I feel it was worth the upgrade over my 85 f/1.8 that I never really loved.
One thing I was surprised to find was that shooting at 1.2, while tricky, did not seem to result in a lower keeper rate than when using my 35L or 135L wide open.
Correct on the location. I actually found the place while looking for a location just to test out the lens. That was the first time I had been there even despite previously having commuted to the Oregon Expwy exit for a couple years...

Probably because you're already used to bright primes. As long as you don't focus and recompose at/near wide open you'll be fine.

OoF* and no, they do not.

you must gather a fair understanding of the workflow for a photographer before making shallow judgments of one's personal efforts.

there are usually three tiers of process sharpening one goes through before a professional considers a shot a "finished product."

V, your shots are astounding and the DoF control you had during ambient situations is absolutely stellar. please neglect the critique that derives from those who obviously lack the experience (or maturity) to dish it appropriately.

an update to everyone...i finally received this lens. funny enough, it was the day after a night where my insomnia caught up to me behind the wheel.

long, ugly story short...i'm okay.

and this lens is MUCH more than just that.

if i only had three pieces of glass, it would be this lens, the 24mm 1.4L and the 300mm 2.8L IS. they are serve their own special purpose other than FL preference and damn it, they are all amazing.

(the 24mm 1.4L is greatly underrated.)
