it's a decent shot, but (constructive criticism) the flash is a tad harsh. Coulda diffused it or decreased the flash exposure by a stop or 2.

Yeah - you're probably right. I usually dial in -1 FEC in strong sunlight but this was an impromptu photo and I didn't have time to set my camera up as I normally would.

Good point - it was a bit of a grabbed shot of a willing stranger and I think I chose the framing simply to avoid some people just of shot in the background. I have to say it is a difficult skill to remember good photographic and compositional technique as soon as there is any pressure on a shot!

85L @ 1.2/5D/ ISO 1600/ 30% crop/ 1/250th sec under really ugly flourescent lights, AWB-I just grabbed the camera and fired/ Manual exposure/ a bunch of PP in LR2 but tried to keep the rosy cheeks, today was my first time trying the brush and lightening the whites of the eyes, pretty neat. I fell in love with this kid, full of enthusiasm and go for it attitude and had I not had this lens with me, I wouldn't have even bothered trying to shoot anything at all. What's even more thrilling is how much his mom loves this shot. The boy, he could care less LOL, he's off riding his bike at warp speed :-)

Ahhh my fellow Canon Family members,

I will be posting up some samples from my newest and most yummy piece of glass (the 85 1.2 L) - however, I have a quick question:

I've paired the 85 with my 40d and (sporadically) after say 10 or 15 shots, the camera will shut off and the battery light will start to blink. I KNOW my battery is at a full charge, and it only does this with the 85 (????) Anyone have similar issues or can offer a solution? If I have posted in the wrong thread, please accept my apologies...

Thanks guys for any and all help!

That's the problem. Most displays cannot reproduce the entire gamut of Adobe RGB. It's really only useful if your final output is print.

Well it was just a suggestion. This being a lens archive, people will want to see how this lens performs, and if their browser can't see it properly, then that kinda ruins the point. But it's ok, its only one image.

Since my question is related to this piece of wonderful glass, I would like to ask what the big difference is there from mkI and II? I've read a few threads regarding faster focusing speed, but is there anything else? Thanks for your responses... If you don't want to post here, please shoot me a PM... Thanks again!!!

^ Pardon my stupidity, but could you please define "coatings"? Is it related to the glass elements? Again, please excuse my lack of undertanding... I do, however, appreciate the help/assistance...

- airbutchie :)
Coatings are extremely thin layers of minerals deposited on the lens surfaces to minimize reflections, ghosting and flaring. Typically these layers are about 1/4 wavelength thick, so that they extinguish specific wavelengths of light that get reflected as well (1/4 one way plus 1/4 the other way creates a 1/2 wavelength phase difference that extinguishes the incoming reflected light).

This is very necessary with multi-element lenses, because a modern zoom with, say, 18 elements, could easily loose 50% of the light along the way, due to reflection etc. on all the lens surfaces. Coating reduces this to just a few percentage points, and the latest developments in coating have the potential to make it even less.

Light that gets reflected inside a lens can also be reflected back from other lens elements, which then can and does cause all kinds of other nasty side effects, like loss of contrast, veiling, decrease of sharpness, loss of colour etc.

To see the effect of coating, take an ordinary piece of glass, and put that next to a good, multi-coated filter on a piece of black velvet, both slightly elevated above the velvet, illuminated by some incident lighting. Looking at about 45 degrees to the velvet, you'll find that the filter will be totally transparant, and the velvet will look black, as if there is no glass, while the velvet under the piece of glass will look rather dim, greyish, due to these reflections.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

The 85 L, like many wide-aperture lenses, does show CA fringing. It's an optical fact of life. There are, though, PP techniques to bring this down a lot. Sometimes you get amazing results from a lens like this and the distortions are worth a little effort.

^^ Also agreed. CA is rare, but it does show up time to time under the right circumstances. Easily fixed or at least reduced. As Tony says, it's a fact of life with fast lenses especially.

Rudi
18th of September 2008 (Thu), 06:52
It's a fact of life! Even perfect lenses only bring all wavelengths of light into (almost) perfect focus when they're in focus!. As soon as you move out of focus, the different wavelengths of light move out of phase. If the OOF area was in front of the subject's face, the colour shift would be to the opposite side of the spectrum.

not to be nitpicky or anything, but does that picture look a little soft? I thought it would have more pop to it, maybe i'm just wrong since the DOF is so shallow.

It's not soft but has a very shallow depth of field. In my (limited) experience this is not the best way to use the 85L at or near wide open.

For this shot I think F4 would have been the best aperture to pop the subject - at or near wide open the head blurs into the background, reducing pop.

As soon as you go a bit further back from the subject wider apertures help to isolate the subject from the scene - examples are on this thread of a busy scene with lots of people in it & yet one is perfectly picked out by an f1.2 aperture - albeit at a greater subject-camera distance.

Having said all that, it's a personal thing and sometimes shots like this with just the eyes in focus can be very effective.

Got my lens on friday afternoon via UPS about 6:30. Took the wife to dinner downtown and squeezed off a few handheld while walking.

These are all handheld.

So far I like the lens. It is my first prime of this kind really, besides my big Primes (300,500,600). So it took some getting use to on the focusing etc. It seems to focus fairly slow (compared to what I am use to) and a little loud. This seems to be the common remarks on this lens, so it is in the characteristics I suppose. Nothing to jump ship on, just something new.

It is not very good at macro. Of course you can always close the diaphragm, but there is a reason why Canon limited MFD to 0.85 m.

Of course, if you want to experiment or do artsy stuff in macro mode, it is great.

Hi Mark, personally I think you need to work on composition. The first shot has the rock too centered and furthermore it is not a very interesting subject. The second shot has the foreground rocks being too distracting (and out of focus), with the center rocks also not overly interesting. I hope I'm not being too harsh! :)

Are there any waterfalls or flowers in that scenic spot? You should try capturing those. Good luck!

Hi Colin,

Thanks for the comments - I see what you mean with the first picture about the rock, but I did not actually pick the scene for its beauty - I was just trying different things with this lens.

The seccond one - Perhaps I should have cropped out a bit more of the oof rocks in the foreground, but again I was just playing around with narrow Dof.

If you look closely in the seccond pic there is a mini waterfall with some colourfull leaves stuck which I thought was nice in sharp focus with surrounding oof with narrow depth of field, but hey ho I am only experimenting for fun.
