I noticed that we have no image archive for the 85L (mk1 or mk2). I think it's time we start one since we have had quite a discussion recently about this lens. Mods: if this has already been started, feel free to delete. I noticed the review by schmoezel, but it's not an image only archive.
I'll start I guess, nothing fancy.

All right, I know that one sucked. I also know, or at least think, that the idea behind showing off this lens is its amazing bokeh.
Here's one I took today at an apple farm in New Paltz, N.Y.
No, the horizon is NOT crooked, the trees in the background actually slope that way.
What do you think of this shot. This was at f2

schmoelzel is proof enough its not the camera that makes the photographer but the person holding it. I know a 1D is a good "classic" camera but the shots of his I have seen always blow me away. There must be some sort of secret? They are just amazing.

Actually, I just met him that day. His father, who is a Colonel, asked me to shoot his son's wedding. He had just returned home from Iraq on mid-tour leave for two weeks to marry his girlfriend. Since it was a last minute thing I agreed to shoot the wedding. Not a very big deal. Only a few immediate family members and a couple of friends were there. I posted more shots in the wedding forum as seen here... http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=268272&page=5

Thanks.
I didn't do anything to reduce noise. It was however shot in RAW and my workflow is usually something like:
1. Open RAW image in Lightroom
2. Tweak settings under "Basic" mode
3. Export to CS3 as a TIFF
4. Crop if needed (wasn't done to this image)
5. Slight curves adjustment
6. Convert to 8-bit
7. Resize for web
8. sharpen using Unsharp Mask
9. save as jpeg

I borrowed my Dads 135L so shot some comparison shots playing with my tungsten lights and I have to say that indoors the 85L is the one that delivers.
Performance at f/1.2 is superb but on these pics I wanted greater DOF. Naturally, as this is the 85L archive I am only posting the 85L snaps:

No flash used..........this is the beauty of the 85L and when you have a skylight flooding the space with natural light!!

airfrogusmc
11th of September 2007 (Tue), 10:19
2 bodies for pretty much for everything I shoot. Its just easier than changing lenses and when I do need a little more I always have the 24 with me. Remember I shot with Hasselblads & Canon F-1s for years. I don't think the stuff I shoot with today is that heavy. I rented a 300 2.8 for a couple things I had to shoot this past weekend; now thats heavy...

This is my first post on the forum... so... hi.
I went on an aide trip to India last year and knew I'd be taking a ton of pictures, so I decided to rent the 85L II. (from lensprotogo.com)
I was blown away with the image quality my Rebel XT was capable of with a quality lens on the front!!!! I got hooked... and... just bought my own about two weeks ago (along with the 40d). I promise, if you are thinking about getting this lens, you will definitely NOT be disappointed!
All were taken handheld, with available light, and all but the last were taken wide open (f1.2). The last pic I stopped down to f2.8.
