I would appreciate your comments. I'm not sure if this picture "works":

Your technique is good. Nice crisp focus and an interesting subject taken from the best angle possible. The side-lighting on the flowers casts a nice shadow.
But for me the photo doesn't work due to some things that were out of your control on this shot.
Tree in the background is doing two things. It's complicating what could be a simplier picture. It (or an adjacent tree) is also casting its own shadows on the subject, which is keeping the side light from casting consistant shadows through out.
Then the side lighting, which is working well on the face of the pillar, has washed out the right side of the column. Picking up the exposure off that surface may have helped, or backeting the exposure -.5 and -1 might help too.

I agree, but the detail on the stone is lovely. Try cropping the top and left...
