View Full Version : Harvest Moon Tonight! Oct. 6 Where are you?

I'm in UT where it's raining all day with wind and heavy rain tonight. I was going to shoot the moon here with my 70-200 f4 because it's not so smoggy, like it is in Northern Virginia. But now I'm stuck and it's raining in VA as well. This is the closest the moon will be and the brightest. I'll try to get it tonight and post. Anyone going out to try it tonight?
I'm setting my 20D to 1 second, ISO 400, exposure on f4. Is that too much light?

I am going to give it a try as well, I went out last night to practice, but the clouds took away too much brightness to get a decent shot. It will be somewhat clear here in Simi Valley, Ca tonight. I will let you know what I come up with :)
1 second is going to blow out the moon, something like 1/200th up to 1/500th will work with F/11-F/16, adjust ISO accordingly to get the right exposure. Its all about experimenting :)

I tried it last month in my bedroom bathroom with a tripod to the window because I couldn't see the moon from the ground floor. VA, trees, who knew? And it was set so badly in the dark. I will definitely try the 1/200th and f11 tonight. I've never done this with any success before because I never had a good lens. I heard the 70-200 f4 is really quite good at 200.
Edit: Now I wish I had purchased the 1.4 extender as it only adds 2 stops to the f4.

I'll be in Colorado Springs ... er make that the foothills near Colorado Springs. There was a noticeable effect from air polution in town when I was shooting the moon last night.
Long exposures aren't neccessary for moon shots and are usually unwanted unless you have a tracking mount.

Hello all,
Looks like clear skies here tonight. I've yet to shoot the moon; may a noob ask what tips and settings you might suggest(besides using a tripod).
Thanks!

I am in Northern NJ and was going to try tonight as well, however it is very cloudy and raining and I believe it will be like this all day and night, however I will be ready just the same. I am trying 1/500th f/14 different ISOs and will be using my 400mm.

Oh, what I'd do for a 400mm! Anyway, Ronnie, just keep reading the posts here. I am going to do the same as KonTiki about the setting it and then moving the ISO around. I just haven't been able to get a clear shot yet due to pollution in Va and trees. Here, it's supposed to be easier, but with the bad weather, I'm not hopeful. Oh, I also have issues trying to get fireworks. Always too many trees.

Suzie,
Will do, thanks! KonTiki, great quote there from AA. My uncle actually met him and set a shot up for him once. He called the Southern Pacific Railroad office in Salinas, Ca. looking for a "very long stretch of railroad track" and my uncle ended up taking him to a remote spot in the San Joaquin Valley. Said he was extremely nice and thankful.

I'm setting my 20D to 1 second, ISO 400, exposure on f4. Is that too much light?WAY too much!
Try 1/200, f/8, ISO 100. Bracket on either side of that if you want.

I will bracket tonight. I am probably going to borrow a tripod as I didn't bring one here. I will try every suggested setting here. I'm hoping to just catch a few good shots. I'm not asking for much. Thanks, Curtis. I have tons of questions for you sometimes about my flash work. Just have to make sense of it all before I ask. Most questions are really stupid.

I'm in western PA and right now it's clear and sunny, but I haven't checked tonight's forecast yet, so who knows. Suzie, I have the same problem here with all the trees plus I live in a very built up area so there are a lot of lights. Hard to get a clear shot. Still, I'll give it a try.:)

In upstate NY we were on a hill and the trees were high, but I could always see the moon. In VA the moon rises through the trees in the backyard and is at it's highest point around 3 a.m. It really makes it hard to first, remember to set the alarm to ring at 3 a.m. and to be awake enough to take a good shot. :)

Of course and I forgot to mention that a tripod is a must and if you have a remote use it as well.

Hmmmm a moon shot.........3:00 am........ well, No smog here in the most NE corner of CA, should have a clear shot of it coming up over the Hays Mts in NV. Clouds are drifitning around. Had some really good rain storms and thunder this eve. I just might get up and try it, heck it's only an hour earlier than when I normally get up :)) The clouds could lend to some interesting effects.

Well it looks like we've got the exposure thing worked out.
This big pile of gray dust begs for post-processing. Use levels or your tool of choice to ad some contrast, and sharpening helps a lot, too. Color to choice. ;)
Here's my effort with the Sigma 70-200 + 2xTC.

Thanks everyone! These shots are truly amazing and I'm so glad I started this thread. Last night I was having dinner with my sons and their friends and it rained buckets for about 2 hours in a row causing floods all over this part of UT. When I dropped everyone off I drove back to my sister's house and the moon came out from the clouds and I got this with my 70-200. Sorry, I don't have editing software here, but this is straight JPEG from my 20D.

Hope it worked.
Everyone's pictures were inspiring. The moon never looked so good.

Oh forgot. After I snapped about 20 pictures, the clouds came back around and it rained another few hours. I think I was just very lucky to have parked right then and got my camera out. No tripod, handheld.

Great shot, and hand held. What did you end up using for shutter, apeture and ISO

This is by far, probably the best full moon shot I've ever seen! Wow!
I don't have the right camera to attempt a moon shot.

I was not surprised to find out that Canon made a 20D version for looking at the stars. I was so tempted to get one because I bought my husband a fantastic telescope last year. The moon looks huge in it. But I think some of the shots here are also amazing. Thanks everyone for posting. And I don't remember for that particular shot what settings I used, but I think I did f8, 1/200 or 1/250 and I went ISO 100. But let me check.
