This is the first time I have been clued in to this WWPD thing and will be out of town for the weekend, though I could likely find a church or 2 throughout rural Alberta, might be interesting. Seeing that this is long weekend I will have to rush to be able to post on Monday but will try. It's Thanksgiving weekend up here (ya, we don't combine it with Christmas like south of the border ;)).

How about if I worship the deep fried turkey?

Oh, we're not that picky around here. Wouldn't be the first time someone posted on Tuesday or Wednesday. And these themes are WIDE open to interpretation, so feel free to.... um.... interpret! Though you might have to include an explanation of the deep fried turkey.

Hmmm... We were too busy decorating to go out taking photos this weekend, so a bit of improvisation is in order...

Here's the church, and the steeple:

We had a few problems at work this morning, and I just didn't feel like driving around looking for a nice, photogenic church afterwards. I just wanted to get home, spend a little time online maybe, then go to bed. So, I'm going with a couple I took early in the morning for something to go back to in case I couldn't find something better. These are two quick snaps of the chapel at work (it's a Catholic hospital):

Like I said, it was early, so the chapel wasn't open yet. Otherwise I would have gotten at least one from inside.

I knew immediately what I wanted to shoot... but I don't think I've done it justice. I found this little church one day as I was riding around on my bicycle. I've lived here over 20 years and never had any idea it was there. I really wish the Pastor would have agreed to pose in front of the church. She was a delightful, very young 70 something year old woman, with bleached blond hair, done up in a big bouffant. The church is off the side of an alley way and was, originally, an appliance store. She and her husband bought it about twenty years ago and she took over as Pastor after he died.

Wasn't sure if I should go color or black and white.... I wanted to capture the fact that it was hidden away in the midst of the city. I was told the steeple is lit up at night, but I didn't get back there in the evening.

Thanks, Condyk & Beth. Funny thing is, I still can't see it. I wonder what's wrong. I can see everyone else's. Well, whatever. Here's my second shot.

And I see from the preview that I scored another red x. Another of life's mysteries.

I did... but I was feeling a bit rushed 'cause her son and DIL were waiting outside. These are the only two shots I took, with a crop of the first to give you a blurry look at the pastor.

No, Beth, my address bar doesn't show a www before photography-on-the.net.

I just can't understand my problem. I did change my profile to change my email address. Could that be the problem? I'm no computer whiz, and this next question will show you that I'm not. I changed my Pop-Up Blocker to exclude ALL pop-ups. could that be the problem?

Thanks Chrissa. The structure is straight. The final stitched panorama had considerable barrel distortion because I didn't have my pano head with me. I was going to remove it in Photoshop, but quite liked the effect.

Wow, some great churches there. Love the "prayer stop", the round-ish one (yeah, looks better not being straight). Just a shame those kids weren't in costume at the time.

And yeah, the ink is STILL on Ali's thumbs. Good thing she's a nursery teacher and she can go through the whole thing again today with her kids... (the only pens I had to hand were CD writing pens, so it's there to stay a while!!)

With Thanksgiving celebrations taking place I was only able to get out today and do the shots I had planned. Hope everyone will forgive me.

The shots are of the Calvin Presbyterian Church and LaGuerre Cemetery located south of Montreal near St Anicet.
The Church has fallen into dis-repair and is overgrown with weeds and trees. It was last used in 1941 and the last burial was done in 1948.
The Church was started in 1847 and finished in 1851.

The story of the Church can be found at the folllowing website

like 75D, Thanksgiving, and a party for my 1 yo granddaughter, took up almost all my time. I even had plans in my mind to build a shrine for the deep fried turkey but was too busy to do so. BTW, the turkeys turned out awesome, Mmmm.

I know of lots of old, many abandoned, wood frame churches in rural Alberta, I just did not have the time this weekend to get to them.

I did get a chance to shoot a couple of the rural churches along the way out of town to our property. While not great technical photos or architectural wonders, it does show some of the simpler churches out there and that for some a place to worship means more than the looks of the place they do worship.

This first was in Cremona, Alberta and of the 7 churches I shot was by far the most modern and it is still far from that. I did like the sign out front and the simplicity of the cross.

This church in Sundre, Alberta is very typical of the style of churches for the lost 100+ years built all over the prairies.

http://bearleealive.smugmug.com/photos/101324939-L.jpg

Although the furthest from the best looking the one below is my favourite. It is in Westbrook, Alberta which is basically a couple houses, a school and a church for the ranches/farmers in the surrounding area. It is constructed with inexpensive mobile buildings typical of those used on construction sites. It is one that shows that lots of money being spent on the church structure is not necessary to practice your religion.

Mark Pretty alter area, how old is this church?

75D Such nice stone work, pity it ended up abandonded.

Jim Nice variety, goes to show, it isn't the building that makes the church.

I found this week's results interesting. Such a range of churches, from whimsical to derelict, with a wide range of architecture, from Spanish mission to modern and make-over.

There were some surprises for me, such as the over-grown cemetery in 75d's post. Around here most cemeteries, even abandoned ones, are maintained with regular mowings, although the stones might be in disrepair since maintaining them costs money. I was also struck by the similarity in architectural design between 75D's church and the early Presbyterian churches we have here. BTW, I appreciated the link to the church's history.

Also liked seeing the church interiors, especially BeckyN's 1st shot, which clearly says "American Church" to me. Nice composition and exposure.

Crissa -- You asked where my shot we taken. The answer is: a few miles north of Gettysburg, PA. I enjoyed your 2nd shot. With all the power lines and shadows, it looks like the church has a direct wire to its God.

I have a suggestion to discuss. What about "SIGN OF THE TIMES"? I've often thought I'd like to have a go at a "social commentary" photo. It's a broad topic that can range from changes in communication to the high cost of living (gasoline?) What do y'all think?
