Hi the HS wrestling/college season is still a little ways off. I am looking for some feedback/suggestions from experienced shooters on technique and lens choice. Given the fact the lighting is highly variable from one venue to the next and the fact that flashes are not always permitted - could some veteran shooters share some insight on to what is successful?
Many have suggested the 85mm 1.8 Canon lens or the 135mm f2 - my question is how do they compare to say the 70-200? I imagine you'd need at least 2.8 setting to get the whole wrestler in focus - probably closer to f4 given the movement and the fact there are two people - isn't the depth of field too limited under that? I am having a hard time understanding how the 85mm or the 135f2 are going to help - other than obviously being able to work in lower light.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated I was hoping to get a solid initial discussion going before the season starts here.

If you told me I could only have one lens to shoot wrestling with - and that flash would not always be allowed - it would be the 85 f1.8. DOF can be a touch narrow, but at the distances you normally shoot, sufficient. The 70-200 is more flexible, but if you use it at 200mm @f4 you have 50% of the DOF.

What is the general feeling on the 70-200 2.8 for wrestling? given the fact that the lighting situation is often unknown. can other users post some examples of shots with the 70-200.
