So what makes this better/worse than the 20D?
I am looking at the 30D and also comparing it to the Nikon D80. The main thing I like is that the 30D shoots more frames per second, can anyone else weight up the Nikon vs Canon?

I hate the compare Canon/Nikon stuff simply because they are never very objectif, both of them are great cameras I don't have a Nikon so I can't talk about that but I can tell you that the Canon 30D simply Rocks.
Now since you already have a 20D so you probabely have invested in some lenses and I don't see why you should be switching to Nikon at all.
comparing the 20D to the 30D is quite easy.
1) IQ are the same you won't feel any difference at any ISO
2) the bigger LCD is VERY sweet but is it a must?
3) more fps ok but again so what I almost always set my 30D to 3fps anyways even when shooting sport it is enough for me
4) the spot meter is great, it was the main reason why i upgraded my 10D but I shoot 90% of the time in spot meter which might not be your case
in short the 20D is great, unless you really NEED something of the specified above I'd say save your money for a great lens, they are much more important than cameras and they retain money value for a longer time
hope it helps

I'm trying to decide the same thing - Nikon D80 or Canon 30D?!
I've already put a deposit on a D80, but might change that tomorrow to the 30D :)

D80 has noisier image quality at high ISO, I think that would be the most noticable difference in prints from the cameras.

Coming from a Nikon D200 and decided to sell it and get a 30D, this what tells you? comparing it to the D80 well its hard to speak for that camera since I havent Used it but to tell you the truth compare the image quality on both cameras not the ergonimic or extra fuctions that you might not even use since you are barely starting. Going with a 30D you cant go wrong ;)
as to Canon Vs Nikon there no bias to it. its going to be an on going debate on this weather you go nikon forums they going to tell nikon is the best but its up to you on what you need or what will be the purpose of it.
Good Luck!

Gina,
Don't get too hung up on the fps unless you REALLY need it. My 30D is usually set on cont low (3fps) as that is absolutely fine for most uses. Ignore the 8 vs 10 mpix debate - go on IQ (noise) and handling. Each to his own on the latter, the 30D is nearly identical to the 20D in that respect. I love it and hate the Nikon interface, others go the other way! Sad deluded folk that they are ;)

Why are iPods so popular? Simplicity and elegance. I completely agree with you addict. When I first chose a DSLR, Nikon's mish-mash of buttons confused the heck outta me. Canon, on the other hand, had 1/2 the number of buttons, and did the same things I wanted a camera to do: take great pictures! :D
Edit: ok, well Nikon doesn't really have 2x the number of buttons, but it sure seemed like it as I had to press multiple buttons (simultaneously at some points) to do what I want!

D80 is a sweet camera. Basically a D200 minus weathersealing in a plastic body.
However, the 30D is also nice. Spot Metering, 1/3rd step ISO, and bigger LCD would definitely make me prefer it over the 20D.
The D80 is also nice too. I think the whole "noisy high ISO" argument is way too overplayed.

Canon's starting a rebate program on Monday. $100 off 30d, unless you buy another qualifying product (e.g., lens, flash), then it's $200 off.

I also like the incremental increase in ISO on the 30D compared to the 20D. I find myself shooting at 560ISO instead of 800, or a 1000 ISO instead of 1600ISO. It makes a difference in IQ.

If you have a 30D you don't want to use ISO 1000 nor ISO 560, maybe not even ISO 200...
Try ISO 160/320/640/1280 they are the cleanest ISO range in the 30D
