View Full Version : What's in *Your * (CF) Wallet?

I was just catching up on some Disney-related websites, and as usual an article on photography in the theme parks caught my eye.
The writer goes on to discuss digital, as in "some people feel they have to take film so they can get good enlargements" although he does mention that some cameras now have 5 MP (ooooh) and can give 8x10s that are almost as good as those from the finshing lab! I give a hearty chuckle!
Then he asks "should you carry more than one memory card?" ROFLMAO!!!
At that point I always ask "what will you use in the afternoon?" I carry about 2GB, what I consider usually enough for 2-3 days without the laptop or some other backup.
It always reminds me there is *big* divide between the people in this group and the 'average' digicam owner!
What's in your CF wallet?

I still haven't bitten the bullet and sprung for any 1-gig cards, but I do have 2 512's and six 256's. Now that I'm shooting RAW almost exclusively, I'm starting to think more and more about the 1G cards.

2 - 1GB CF cards
1 - 1GB MicroDrive (leftover from my S40)
1 - 512MB CF card
2 - 256MB CF cards
a few misc 16, 32, and 64MB CF cards
All are interchangable with my S40 P&S Camera, all but the 1GB CF cards were originally bought for the s40, which fits about 4000 pics on a 1GB card.

I've got about a Gig worth of assorted CF cards.. 128's, and 256's and a 340 Microdrive.
I carry a laptop with a CD burner when I'm on the road so I don't worry too much about filling up all my CF cards... I can offload to the computer hard drive and archive that onto CD.
I'm not a RAW only shooter, so I can get a lot of shots on 1 Gig using fine large JPEG if I find myself needing to conserve memory.

I have three 1 GB cards and a couple of 256 cards from previous cameras though I seldom use them. My 1GB cards consist of 1 IBM microdrive which the store threw in when I bought the 10D and two Lexar cards.

Presently my inventory has
1 gb Lexar x40
256 Lexar x12
128 Lexar x4
Purchased in reverse order, I've discovered that with action shots Jpegs records a lot quicker than RAW so the 1 gb covers most events with room to spare. Purchased a Dell notebook with CD burner for the quick download and that will hold me until I see what's coming out on the market after the CES show. I'm sure by spring I'll add two more 512's or better.

2 Sandisk Ultra 512
8 Assorted 256
4 Assorted 128 (Which I use in the S50)
40 GB Flash Trax
A couple of old 16Mb which were cutting edge and cost a fortune when I got my first digital camera :-)

1x 1GB prof speed.
1x 128MB Xtra hs as backup when for some reason I forget my 1GB card.
And ALWAYS a 30GB XsDrive.
I have done this right away and gives me peace of heart when shooting, I will NEVER run out of diskspace.
Greetings,

1 x 512 MB (Delkin Devices)
3 x 128 MB (Sandisk)
1 x 64 MB (Sandisk) - I got it for free because the shop accidentally left it in the camera when I bought it
1 x 40 GB FlashTrax drive
I'm using the 512 MB card all the time in my 10D and I'm always shooting RAW. It has room for about 80 photos. I've never filled it up completely... Ofcourse the FlashTrax drive is very handy.

I shoot with an EOS 10D. I carry with me:
2x 1Gig Ridata 52x CF cards
2x 512MB Ridata 20x CF cards
1x 1Gig IBM Microdrive
plus
1x 20Gig X-drive II (this one occasionally stays behind at home or in the car, but the 4Gig-worth of cards always come with me :)).
I shoot RAW exclusively, and during a typical wedding, will shoot between 2.5 and 4 Gig...

2 x 512 Sandisk
2 x 256 Sandisk
2 x 128 Sandisk (emergency)
If I'm gone over night, the TTX laptop tags along with blank CDW's. I always burn the days images onto a CD. Can't afford to loose those duck and deer shots :)

2 x Fuji 512 cards
2 x Fuji 256 cards (backups, never usually used)
This will do me for a day shooting RAW.
I'm looking at a portable solution for holidays/on the road and can't decide between taking the laptop or buying a portable system like the XDrive etc.
Cheers

I have both, and they fulfill slightly different roles...

I just have the following
256Mb Scandisk
64Mb Scandisk
16Mb Scandisk
1 IPAD 20Gb HDD on it. Great little device. Wife did good getting me this for XMAS.
I am looking at getting another 256 or maybe 512, so when I am downloading to my IPAD, I can still take numerous action shots. I also found out that RAW action shots are slow to take, so I do them in HIGH JPEG. Is this OK

You notice I'm not too active in this discussion. With only 2.5 gigs of CF cards, I'm a real lightweight.
BTW. Does anyone know if there's a way to check memory on a CF card? I have one card that occasionally gives me a few scrambled images. I've re-formatted it a few times, and the results are mixed. In other words, it doesn't happen every time I use the card.

I was wondering..I'd figure you'd have 6 or 8 wallets with 4 gigs each! ;)
Format them on your computer. Check properties, Defrag. Whatever. Treat it like any other drive.

Well, it's possibly something to shoot for.
Say, did I just make a play on words?

Yeah.
Embarrassing, but I have a Sony VAIO laptop and a Gateway notebook. I also have one of the 30-gig Flashtrax units. I haven't figured out how to fit that in the CF slot on my camera yet.

Well then there ya go. See, I knew you had a backup system and wouldn't go out with only a whimpy 2.5 gigs of CFs.

A minimum of two 512 MB cards. My next trip to India, I'll be carrying about 3 GB of cards and have a portable 80 Gig HDD drive backup in the hotel room for nightly backups.

I have a Ridata 512MB CF card, a Transcend 512MB CF card and I just bought a new Ridata 52x Pro 2GB card.
I also have a 30GB HDD in my X's Drive.
Most of the time the 2GB card sits in my Pocket PC, but if I want to use it in the camera I just back up the entire 2GB to my PC first.
The 2GB card seemed better value than the 1GB (less $ per GB) and by the time I replace my 10D, maybe I'll be buying a 24MPix full frame D-SLR. Then the 2GB will be my little CF card that I use as an emergency backup.

Hmmm, lets me think
I have 3*1Gb sandisk Ultra and 3*1Gb IBM microdrives plus a 10Gb nixvue vista, shoot everything in raw so the cards/microdrives should cover most things but have the wallet if I need to make more space.
best regards
