View Full Version : Back Up Software. Back up to DVD Image ?

I have an idea of how I would like to implement an improved system for DVD back ups.

I want a back software app that will incrementally write image files of a selected folder into copies of the files within in DVD image files (or ISO's etc.) on another hard drive.

NOTE I am NOT looking for the standard apps that will back up to DVD directly requiring the user to babysit the process all the time.

This should be done automatically in the back ground, just like my current back up app does, but instead of creating simple copies of the files (as my current app does) or zip type files (as many other back solutions do) I want the resulting copies on the dupe hard drive to be pre split into perfect little 4GB DVD Images ready to burn when I feel like taking the time to feed the DVD burner.

In essence this will give the user a built in two level back up system with the least amount of fuss (first level is the the image files on a second hard drive, a back up already, and the second level are the DVDs themselves.)
Does anyone have a positive experience with such an app?
Does it even exist?
And if not,. any one want to write it?

That sounds like a good idea but I have not heard of a backup software that does that.

Does it have to be an ISO file? How about rar file?

I have not automated it completely but I run rar that packs the photos to a rar archive and splits in 4 GB chunks so i can burn those to DVD's later. I am sure this can be automated more than I have (I start the archiver manually).

My current app actually does that, but uses the Zip format. (really whats the dif?) so if all else fails I might set that up instead... hmmmm
I was actually hoping for it not be one of those formats though, i'd rahter the resulting DVD's simply be full of normal readable uncompressed files. so i can just pop them in and read the data.

But I suppose I will forgo that if nothing else pops up.
