I snapped these pics yesturday messing around with my little Canon Rebel XT and a 24-105 4/L Lens and a 580EX flash. They were just really test shoots very casual so let me know what you think.. anyway I can improve? any suggestions? I need to get some strobes but thats when i can afford them. Also I have alot of girls lined up who want me to shoot them for modeling portfolios or just shooting.. how much should i charge? I can also build them comp cards too how much should that be? Thanks for any and all feedback :)

bocaj - very nice shots. number 2 is my favorite because of interesting composition. you should not apologize for your equipment; it does not make the photographer. good photographers can make good pictures with what they have. okay, here are some constructive comments (or at least the types of comments I would like to see more of in this forum):
1) Shot number 1, the staircase, while an interesting piece of architecture, is upstaging your model. i would pose her in front of it, or just try different set ups; the pole seems to be cutting into her.
2) like it; only comment might be to get rid of some of the more pedestrian background articles, especially the trashcan. the trees and the walkway and wall are great. good composition and effective rule of 1/3 shot.
3) nice, but hulking stairway overpowers your totally hot subject.
4-7) yes, you got that hot girl on car shot - beautiful model, nice car. but, i think you have more talent than this. these shots are, frankly, tired and predictable. don't get me wrong, they are well executed, but havent we seen these before . . . everywhere. if they were an exercise in lighting, composition and modeling, then well-done.

1) i didnt really think about that until you said it and now its bothering me!! ugh why didnt i see that ;) great comment.. i might take her back and reshoot that and have her in front of that pole..
2) i was thinking the SAME thing the trash can has to go.. i just got lazy and didnt photoshop it out.. plus her image isnt really that sharp so i wasnt sure if this was a strong enough picture to keep but if it is then i will take the time to clone out the garabage can and the other things.
3) Once again you are right.. I think i will take the RAW image and crop her tighter to put more focus on the model vs the stairwell.
4-7) yup thats exactly what i was going for.. the typical girl on hood type thing you might see in a car magazine so that some 16-55 year old kid can get his jollies ( lord knows this girl is smokin enough to get jollies from ) just to see if i could pull it off :)
thank you VERY much for the feedback i shall commit that to memory and try to build a better composition next time... I have alot more from this photoshoot that im going through still.

The shots are very good. I was thinking about getting that lens and now I'm convinced. At the mometn I'm doing weddings but I want to try some modelling shots too. How did you go about getting this girl and the "list of girls" for photoshoots?

For a first time, this is well done indeed! Heck, forget the caveat, this is well done 'period!' As you said, the model is a great target for your camera, and you seem to have shown her off well.
Since you asked for feedback:
1: Though the stair does cut into her, I like it - makes me wonder when the clothes would start, lets the imagination have some fun... :-)
2: I find the way the awning cuts through her distracting. The other lines draw my attention to her, but those lines don't. If you want to keep the image, you could make it all black or something.
3: Good pose and expression. If you were to do it again, perhaps putting a brighter outfit on the mdel would help seperate her from the background more. Make her into the bright spot and greater focus of the composition.
4-7: You got it! The blown-out sky draws more attention to the subjects well, and the model's poses and eye-contact are excellent. I do find some of the horizontal lines to distract from the overall images. Not sure if your shooting area allowed any adjustment of that.
These are minor nit-picks. You did well!
If you weren't using strobes, did you have any reflectors or other light adjustments while you were shooting?

Thanks :) nope i didnt have any reflectors but i think next time im gonna bring one to see what it does for me. This was my first attempt at a real model type photoshoot but it was real casual. I learned alot from it and was actually surprised that these even came out half way decent I thought I wasn't going to get crap but I guess the Camera Gods were good to me that day ;)

Awesome job.
BTW, are you in the UCF area?
Thats one of the few places in Orlando where I could think of where you could have a line of attractive girls wanting to be photographed.

Although some of the nitpicks are valid, you did an excellent job on these IMHO. It would be difficult to take a bad picture of this lovely lady.

Wow... not to nitpick guys, but this thread is over 2 years old. ;) I've been guilty of resurrecting dead threads before too.

She is really hot and you captured her beautifully, not really a pro, but can give you one piece of advice. When you do tilt correction in photoshop etc. (like in the forth photograph), please crop it to remove the white background makes it appearance on the top left hand side of the image.

Yeah, from the stuff I've always seen from Jacob, I would have thought his first "model shoot" would have been more than two years ago.
He's come a long way; and not that these are terrible, but he'll probably have a chuckle when he see's that this has been resurrected.
