To anyone interested ~ Canon Corp's Third Quarter 2003 operating results.
Total Canon Revenue of $6.4 billion is up 9% over same quarter last year. (Full year revs proj $27bln)
Operating profit of $1.1 bln is up 35%.
Camera division represents about 20% of total Canon revenue this quarter, up from 16% same time last year.
Camera division revenue of $1.3 billion is up a whopping 34% over same quarter last year. Camer operating profit of $330 million is up 95%, and is 30% of total Canon op profit. (Full year camera revs are $5.5 bln)
Within the Camera division, digital camera revenue is up 82% and projected to be up 140% in Q4.
Other components of Camera division, Camcorders and Film cameras are down 4% each. Film cameras are expected to be down 40% in Q4, while camcorders would be up about 14%.
The simple math is that digital cameras account for all the growth in the camera division, plus make up for declines in other. Digital cameras account for more then 2/3 of total Canon revenue growth this quarter, and for the year.
Digital camera total market (not just Canon, both compact and DSLR) in 2000 was just over 10 million units. In 2003 that number is about 40 million. In 2006 projected to be 80 million.
