I currently work in the Best Buy Digital Imaging Dept. and today someone returned a Drebel with the 55mm lens. I checked the camera out before they could return it and there was a werid grinding noise comming from the lens that came with the camera. Along with the grinding noise the camera posted an error99. Anybody have any ideas about whats going on?

Something is wrong with the lens and yes, I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. :)

Take the lens off and put another lens on it and the camera's probably okay. Probably the AF has gone south on the lens. And it's an 18-55mm lens that comes with the camera in the kit.

I tried that and the error 99 did not come back. Just a bad lens?

Yup. Error 99 is a general error. It generally pops up when the lens and camera are having trouble communicating.

When I first started using my 10D I started getting the error 99 and found it to be my lenses. Sent them back to Sigma for chip upgrade. They worked just fine. Purchased a new Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 for Christmas and shot maybe a 100 pictures when the error 99 showed back up. Reset the camera but the error kept returning on the first shot no matter which lens I had on. I took the camera back to Best Buy and they replaced it, and for now the new one works fine. I certaily don't want to keep taking the camera back. What could be the cause? The best Buy replacment was great to have but does me no good at one of my sons athletic events when all I can get is error 99.

Well, my 10Dis going back to Canon for the second time in less than 5 months due to continuing Err 99 problems--none associated with lenses. Looks like I've also developed a flash synch problem that only goes away after numerous shots are ruined with no synchronization. Last time it was a bad shutter element, and I'd bet I've got another bad element--luck of the draw I guess.

One thing I have noticed if you have a hard time getting the Err 99 to clear--try popping up the internal flash and taking a shot with it on--use to clear my Err 99s, at least temporarily.

I just hope Canon can turn my camera around in less than the 45 days it took last time.

I put a canon 300mm lens on the defective camera and the error 99 went away. Decided bad lens. Duh! I hope canon fixes there ****, before I jump into the DSLR world.

Thanks for all your your replys, and keep them coming!!

Nothing wrong at Canon. Sh*t happens when you building multi-thousands of anything. They could be making brooms and there'd be a couple defective ones sneak through. :)

Not really. At least not here they don't. And I don't see a trend on the other forums either. Yes, they happen, but it's not like it's some big huge issue.

Ok, I will see in the comming weeks if anymore drebels get returned at my store, and I will be sure to post if any occur.

Any other error 99's out there post, and share your comments. Thanks for your comments rfmsports. Do you run the web site that is linked from your name??? If so, good job.

So these cameras come back and you can't clear the errors? If you can clear them like the other one then maybe the lens is the culprit.

And yes, that's my website. It's a team effort though so I can't take all the credit. Actually I am more like Managing Editor now so I can't take all that much credit these days. ;) And thanks...

The last one returned was 100% the lens, but we still have to return the whole camera because we do not keep extra lenses in the store. Had to order another one, because we sell drebels like hotcakes!!

I helped you troubleshoot it, remember? ;)

A friend of mine just returned his 300D to Best Buy with exactly the same problem: a grinding noise from the kit lens and the infamous error 99. The Best Buy rep said he had seen several lenses with the grinding issue. He stated it was due to breakage in the autofocus mechanism, usually caused by rough handling. (This was the cause in my friend's case.) Thank goodness for the Best Buy extended warranty...only $99 for 4 years of coverage!

I really think one gets a distorted view of things by reading about problems on an internet forum. That is not because the problems are not real but because those who have no problems never write. It would be nice to have one hundred percent product reliability but that is unrealistic. Digital cameras are really mostly electronic devices with a lens attached. Like all electronic gadgets, some suffer from "infant mortality", i.e., if the electronics are going to fail they tend to do so within the first several months of use. If they survive that period, they will probably work well for a very long time.

Your statement is most defintly true, I have sold hundreds of drebels and only seen 2 returned at my store. They are great cameras and I am currently saving money to get my hands on a 300d.

thanks for your replys

I got the error99 on my 10D when I first got it. |Eventually tracked it down to the old lens I was using. It would give the error unless the aperature was wide open.

Same here. I was somewhat alarmed, but when I contacted Sigma, they said to simply ship the lens for a free chip upgrade.

Other than that, I haven't come across the error99.

I'm hoping you can help me with the problems I'm having with my 300D/Digital Rebel. It's not sold in the UK, so I got it in the US and brought it back. So no quick trips back to Best Buy for me!

I've found that nearly all the time, I get the Err99 if I use either of my Sigma lenses, but my Canons are fine.

For a few days I thought the Sigmas were OK if the ISO was below 160, but this then stopped to work.

The kit I'm using is:
- 300D Digital Rebel
- 18-55mm lens that came with it
- Canon 24-85mm USM
- Sigma 70-210mm 4-5.6 UC Zoom (old)
- Sigma 70-210mm 2.8 APO

I tried the Sigmas in many situations, trying to find a pattern, but failled.

Is there a firmware update out there or coming from Canon to address this, or is taking the lenses to Sigma the best solution?

Call sigma to see if you need to get a newer chip installed in the lens so the body will not have trouble communicating with the lens.

Please throw all the damaged Drebels into the dumpster and tell me where that store is! Don't you wish, you could pick the "damaged" cameras up at a nice discouted price??

Our cameras that get returned due to non-abusive damage get returned to Canon USA so the store will recieve credit. I wish they just trashed them! I would be the first in the dumpster. :)

For the Sigma lens problem, here is a good place to start:

http://www.sigma-photo.com/

I originally sent a 17-35mm lens to them to have it re-chipped to work with the Canon D30. I sent it back last summer when it seemed not to work with my Canon 10D...they eventually sent me a replacement lens.

If it is still doing it, then there is only one extremely clear and obvious culprit.

But is the different lens a real Canon lens?

Evidently some folks have found that the Error 99 is an intermitent problem.

I had my EOS 300D for just over one week before the 18-55mm lens suplied with the kit started generating Error99s with the grinding noise and all. My other, much older Canon lenses all work without any problems.

The camera has been handled with kid gloves since purchase - no bumps or shocks or anything.

The only good news is that the store has sent the lens back for warranty service, and left me with the camera body, which still works fine with the older lenses.

A lot of people have mentioned the lens, It seems that sometimes the lens mount of the camera needs cleaning as well. If it isn't the lens then it could be on the camera. Best bet is to clean both the lens and the lens mount before worrying about anything...Dean
