Ok - you can do/try (almost) everything once. I haven't done a poll in POTN yet so here we go!

Below is a picture I'm a bit uncertain. Please give your opinion about who is wearing the mask (and as a response you might justify your opinion); I can learn to know myself better when getting your opinions.

EDIT: see http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=2101614&postcount=25

Has to be the lad on the right...only a mask could hide his chagrin over his mother's obviously cheeky behavior.

It is "The unknown lady having golden mascara". I know this to be true as lately I am becoming increasingly aware of my increasing awareness.

Did I just enter the Twilight Zone?... in the bright daylight ... If you feel uneasy, maybe it is better to keep a distance ... or maybe not, this can be educating.

It's 13 hours since I started this, and I'm close to be banned (temporarily?).

Take a look at the crowd that wants to ban ya....that says it all....obviously jealous they weren't in the photo.;)I would love to think like that, Dan. :D After all, this is not a democracy, but a pekkocracy (this term stolen from Leo (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=2061566&postcount=8)), and because Pekka has not voted banning, I believe I still have hope.

I saw this post go up yesterday and it deeply disturbed me. After a sleepless night, I'm still no further to understanding.

Olli, you're one sick puppy. Either that, or you're suffering from mental constipation...

As I was expecting, during the last 24 hours have learned to know myself better: I've been diagnosticated to be lunatic (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=2100271&postcount=21) drug abuser (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=2100187&postcount=18) (in Finnish I could be called 'varttihullu'), and potentially I'm going to be banned. Well, that's up to the mods to decide.

Behind this seemingly nuts discussion I have a hidden tought. Some of us have voted "The man behid the camera", and I consider that as the right answer. Why? Because whenever we approach somebody or something we can use our camera as the mask, we can hide ourselves behind the gear. It's like a masquerade, having a camera helps us to approach people, it's an excellent excuse to have interaction and in many cases serves as an icebreaker. Does this make sense to you?

Hm, this brings me back to my ARG days. I can think of a few answers to this.
1: The Woman wearing the mask (obviously)
2: The(wo)man behind the camera, perhaps you took a photo of yourself? (I do not know your gender, so do forgive me)
3: No one was wearing the mask, it was photoshopped. A very clever photoshop, the shadows are rather convincing.

For the sake of this thread, i'll go with number three.

Do tell us the answer eventually though =)

That's because the 'correct' answer to your actual question is not featured in the poll ;)

Answers:
1) Yes, she's wearing the (physical) mask.
2) I (male) did not take a photo of myself.
3) My photoshop skills are not on that level, so the picture is not modified.

Right answer ... I guess that's up to our feeling when seeing this thread ...

My answer would be the merchant who is trying to sell the mask which is probably made in an asian country but provided as an impression that it was made locally to the woman who is mearly holding the mask. All others in the photo are showing their true emotions to the event occuring.

BTW: If you are using your camera as a conversation starter then it can't be a mask to your insecurity. It becomes mearly a prop or focus to start conversation, much as the offer of a drink in a bar would be.

I belive I quite rarely start the discussion when shooting, it's common for me just to move on. I'm shy.

I'm sorry, Olli- I cannot respond as the list is not exhaustive of possibilities and does not include my correct answer. I'm surprised at your having omitted the correct answer since you are a resident statistical guru and should know that little oversight invalidates your study. Therefore, any results need to be thrown out and the study redesigned. Banning you as a result of a faulty poll is inappropriate.

love the pic though- lots of things to catch my eye and ponder!

I suspect we do have the same 'correct' answer, which of course cannot be simply understood via language alone.

The question asks: 'who is wearing the mask?' or, one could say, a statement says: 'Who is wearing the mask.' We must assume the lady in the mask is not called 'Who' and so it is not a statement. It is thus a question. One answer, of course, is that we all 'wear a mask' and the mask is the 'conditioned self'.

But there is also a photograph forming part of the 'question', where a woman is wearing an actual mask. On one level therefore the answer could be simply 'the woman', but the paper mask is ultimately no more or less important than the answer 'we all do', where the mask is the 'self', or 'Olli does' when he hides behind his camera'.

The answer then, for me, is it depends on ones own perception ... my own answer would be 'we all do!'

[1] 'Man' in this context meaning a member of the species Homo sapiens or all the members of this species collectively, without regard to sex.

I assumed correctly then, that we would have the same answer. The only answer for me could be "we all do" but perception is key to reality so the other reasonings you mention would have to be counted as well. your explication was well put.

Yes the man behind the camera is wearing his mask, as are all of us POTNers, those that we photograph and yes, even all those who roam the world around us unacknowledged. All humans are behind one mask or another.

now, which one will i wear today?
