Bouncing strobes?

Has anyone had any experience with bouncing strobes off ceilings to light a room up in dark venues? I have an evening wedding to do in two weeks and am having sleepless nights worrying about shadows and contrast. The bride wants a shot of the wedding party on this fancy staircase that is REALLY gloomy and I`m worried that if I light it with a speedlight on the camera there will be giant shadows on the wall above them all.

Any advice would be really well received.

can you go in before hand and take some test shots?

As long as the ceiling or walls are light colored sure, go for it. The only issue is the setup time and locating the strobes.
