First of all for those keeping track of the Canon rebate shipping times, I sent my rebate form in the first week of January and got it last week (last week of February). Now for more serious matters.

FIRST QUESTION: When my D30 writes an image to my compact flash card, the file name would be something like
Img_1824.jpg

When my D30 writes an image to the microdrive, the file name is
118-1824_IMG.jpg

Anyone know whats up with this? I'd like for them to use the same format if possible. I can rename the files if I have to of course, but it sure would be easier if the camera followed the same format with both types of devices.

SECOND QUESTION: To transfer photos from my camera to my computer I usually use a card reader connected on my computer to the USB port. The computer identifies the card reader as another driver on my computer. I then insert my compact flash card and transfer the files to the folder of my choice on my permanent hard drive. When I try this with the IBM microdrive the card reader hangs for a period of time, and then finally says the microdrive needs formatting. I was able to get the images off the microdrive by connecting the D30 directly to the computer via the USB connector and using the Canon ZoomBrowser program, but this takes a lot longer. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

PS. My images are located at http://www.txis.com/~darryl/photos

Darryl,

I have a G2, but can answer your first question. It is the Canon ZoomBrowser that is renaming the data file. I personally prefer the ZoomBrowser file name format. I keep all my pics in folders named 100Canon, 101Canon, etc, with the first three numbers identifying which group of 100 the images came from, or are stored in. Chris Breeze and his BreezeBrowser can batch rename the files in the ZB format at will, and is a fair piece of software for any Canon digital camera user. Get it.

The second question? Check with IBM, or the manufacturer of the CF reader for microdrive compatibility with your OS and hardware. It is possible that the format of the data on the Microdrive is not directly readable with your computer's operating system and your only option is to read through your camera, though I doubt this.

Seen that, but unfortunately can't remember where ;)

That happens if the card reader is not CF II/IBM Microdrive compatible.
It has nothing to do with the operating system which doesn't care the data format on the Microdrive at the point when the card reader tries to recognize the Microdrive i.e this is a hardware/firmware problem.

P.S.
I just remembered that it's really the ZoomBrowser which uses different naming format and that's why I didn't first remember where I have seen this because I neever use ZB ;)
