View Full Version : SOME CHANGES HAPPENED IN FORUMS!

Maybe you noticed the forum has changed a bit. Apart from slight change in appearance it has changed in functionality. We have now private messaging, extensive profile settings, member list with transparent email, full BBCODE support, avatars (still not working fully), polls and new forum order.
I have changed the name to "Canon Digital Photography Forums" because singular form was no longer valid - it was ok when we had boards but as boards are now called forums....
NOTE: you will have to log in again. Old login cookie is no more.
NOTE2: set your profile to show email if you want email link to appear in various places in forum (member lists, posts).
Style issues will be improved all the time, so nothing is fixed yet.

Very nice style pekka, I like it.
I use PHPbb for my forum too, great isn't it?
I am sure you already know this but your topic review is still the subsilver theme. :D :D

I'm new to the forums here but i was getting so sick of the speed and was very close to suggestion you switch to PHP...very glad you did.
I kept trying to log on and had a feeling something nice was on the way.
Good work!

You should really make it so guests cant post messages...if you've got any questions about this software i'm sure there are many people here (i included) who have some experience with all of that.

Yes I know - I have changed only most critical files. I really tore my hair to see how they had implemeted styles - if I just had time I would do my own forum. But I have to live with this, and I think I can. I did styling directly to templates (bypassing db colors) and also some php coding here and there because templates are not .php as they should be :x . I also added custom page compression and some large site db accelerator mods.
Now I have to figure out why avatars do not display on pages, even though permissions are all ok and you can see them on profile page.

aye, I host a couple phpBB forums and have added many mods to them.
http://forums.deckyon.com - My forums for a mod I created for random quotes on the index page.
http://www.sturm.org/fuchikoma - Forums for a local gamming group. It boasts MANY custom mods, including the File Attachment mod allowing for controlled uploads of files and images.

Wow, Pekka this is cool! This is gonna take a little getting used to but I think I like it. It is a ton faster too! I'm wondering how much more it is going to evolve. Keep up the great work, Pekka!

Thanks Pekka, I can only echo what others have said here! The speed, the look and functionality are all appreciated! Sort of reminds me of a finely made Canon

Well done. I have been involved with another forum where each software update creates a one-day to 5-day interruption in service. Unbelievable to see this come into service overnight. You and whoever hosts this site are to be congratulated.
CONGRATULATIONS.

I have always loved this forum, and if you love something enough, I think you're allowed to politely point out some weaknesses (at least weaknesses from my perspective).
1. We don't see who posted the original message, so we can't click on favorite people to see what they're saying/posting.
2. The scaled-down photos might be good for a lot of people, but it means that I have to click the message, then click each photo for the original size, then click the new window closed when I am finished with that photo. This alone may keep me off the forums... not only because it's a lot of trouble to see what people have originally posted, but because my own photos will be reduced.
Just a couple of thoughts. I'm sure there are benefits I'm not aware of.
Cheers,
Don

I like the new look etc - but I very much liked knowing who the originator of a post was without having to enter the message first. I often scan the site and click on a few of my favourites - this is now no longer possible and a big loss as far as I am concerned.

I don't want to be the negative nancy here, but I really dislike the color sceme... :?
Pekka, when you have some time, please go grab some nice subtle and dark (or some other too) schemes from phpBB free schemes. I know this board well, since my friend owns one, and I think it shouldn't be too difficult :)...

No thanks. Didn't like any phpbb style on their site - I really do not want this site to be black/gray like every site on planet which tries to look "cool". Clarity is the key. There is a reason why books are on white paper :)

Dude, I didn't suggest to change the style, but to add one (or a few), so each user can choose the one that pleases his perception devices the most. 8)

No, no user styles at this point. Maybe later.

Oops. that was me.
Now I can also track my threads.
Also, I think the colours scheme is distracting is the context of viewing photos online.

I really like the new feature that shinks all the images to a easily viewable size. Makes for much faster down load. Thanks!!!!
I like the option of loading up the larger images only when needed.
Unfortunately, smaller images are enlarged! Post a small 300 pixel wide image, and it's enlarged up (with the jpeg artifacts)... I would suggest only shrinking files. Only when a file is greater than 600 pixels wide, shrink it to 600. Otherwise show as is (with no option for larger image.)
Also, option for larger image could include dimensions. If massive, perhaps an intermediate size too (again with dimensions.)
Just a quick thought here but also, perhaps a graphic size preference could be worked in. Each viewer could specifiy a graphic size they like (be it 1000 pixels across or 400 or whatever..) in their profile (default at current setting). The server would then shink only files larger than that...

I'll do some resize code to test, maybe in 10 days time (really busy). I think I'll first force to 500 pixel wide if bigger, smaller images not touched. Let's see then how much resources that functionality will eat. It is getting quite busy here and I'd hate to see slowdown happen because of PHP querying sizes from slow external servers. Of course it is always possible to retrieve and save to images locally, change link to that and then get the size (very fast) but that may be an overkill and will need copyright permissions.
