Finally found time to take the lens down to the harbour after work...shot some yachts at the start of the Wednesday Night races, and a few gulls just for practice. Nothing of great note, but it was great to set the lens up and use it. I have to say I really like the way it handles, though it's front focussing a little and I need to do some adjusting.
Can anyone advise on the proper distance to do the tests, please? I have a Lens Align tool that has worked well for my other lenses.

This the only gull shot that was interesting enough to post....

Thanks, Jay. I'll give that a try.

As a matter if interest I have been hanging out for a 500mm lens but they're like gold here in NZ and no-one seems to want to sell one, then this 600 came up at a pretty good price. So now I'm doing a bit of extra gym work!

Carbon Fiber sail?

Yes, with Kevlar patches on the clew and tack...and it looks like a hand-me-down I think. A bit of that goes on with the Wednesday Racing crowd...they're very keen but mostly not very wealthy!

Congrats Ricardo! Glad to see you out enjoying this thing! what setup are you using for tripod/head out of curiosity?

Also, FlyingPhotog, I honestly don't know yay or nay about the MFA at that distance but doing some quick math, according to what you say, the test would be at 3000mm, 300cm, 120in, or 10ft. That's below the MFD on this sucker, so I dunno if that would work with this lens. I could be totally misunderstanding you though, haha.

That should be 50X the focal length and not five times. I knew there was a five in there somewhere!

That's more like it, haha. Thanks, I never knew that recommendation. Luckily my 600, if it needs any adjustment at all MAY back focus just a tick, but even at 100 feet its not that evident. Thank goodness for MA on cameras now days huh? A real life (and time and money) saver!

I've actually never tweaked a single lens I own.

It's probably because I don't spend a great deal of time shooting wide open at MFD but even when I do, I get acceptable results.

Good to know it's available if needed though.

Congrats Ricardo! Glad to see you out enjoying this thing! what setup are you using for tripod/head out of curiosity?

....

Thanks, NC. I appreciate your encouragement.

Regarding the set-up....as a boat designer with aluminium boatbuilders at my disposal I figured that I could design and build a decent setup myself. I did it years ago at our base in Antarctica...I built a gimbal mount for my 300mm lens that fit on an old surveyors tripod, and because with a little friction on the moving parts it could easily be used with heavy gloves, it was perfect for temperatures to -40 degrees.

I looked at the Wimberly and similar gimbal mounts and they truly do look fantastic, but I figured that a two sided gimbal would be easier to construct, and would work just as well, if a little less conveniently.

Then I saw the Manfrotto 393 and thought WTF and ordered one from Adorama. It arrived two days ago, and it works superbly! (Needs a couple of mods which I will do during my Christmas break, but mostly it's excellent.) I have mounted it on some robust CF legs and the whole thing is very stable. The QR plate is very secure and easy to operate, which is a bonus.

Now I just have to practice and practice....it's one thing to have the gear...and another to develop the eye and mind to make the most of it.

Goincarcrazy

oh so true about developing and eye for this thing. I found one thing that helps me a LOT is using a the precision matte focus screen. It lets me see the DOF a LOT easier.

As I've mentioned before, I've totally given up on using a tripod. I feel so limited as to my range of motion but yes, this lens will give you a good workout! I can't wait to see a new contributor to the group! Especially in yet another beautiful place with amazing wildlife. You and commonjunks have my green with envy. I thought Florida was good for birds...phuey!

So I have an oppertunity to pick up a mint 600mm 4L Is for about 5K. My first shoice was a 400mm 2.8L because of the low light capability if I wanted to shoot some local HS games. Mainly the lens would be used for Zoo shoot, nature and eagles in the winter time. I have a 70-200mm 2.8L IS II but even with the 2X it just isn't enough reach.

Starting to get the hang of this thing....

I'm using a Manfrotto 393 on a bipod...and this shot of a little sivereye taken at 1/60 sec shows that it does the job well enough. But I'm not finished yet...I still plan to increase the imbalance even more to take out the smaller vibrations.

And I've got to put this one in....not because it's a high quality shot, but just because I got lucky with my timing.

I'd watched this guy sitting on an old stump as I walked along the beach and was wondering how I was going to get near enough to make a shot when he dived and came up with something in his beak. So I dropped the bipod legs down, composed quickly and fired off a few quick shots. This is massively cropped and not clear enough for more than "snap-shot" status, but it made me smile when I saw it. I guess the crab wasn't that happy!

BiPod? Do tell...

Well it's like this, Jay....my first experience with a long lens was the old Takumar 500 f5, back in the 60s. It was pretty basic but had the reach, with all that that implies. So I thought about what was really happening, and being a fit young fellow with a steady hand and eye, I figured that if I could nail the bullseye on the rifle range I could do it with a lens. And from my memory, some of the best shooting I ever did was with an LMG (Bren gun) with a bipod.

So I made a sort of rifle stock out of aluminium tube and bar and had the parts welded together. Well forward of the point of balance I mounted two legs of an old tripod, but the secret is to put a hard rubber block between the front of the assembly and a non-rotating part of the lens. This takes out any of the shimmer you get from mounting something at it's point of balance. After that it was just a matter of pulling the "stock"...a light tube with a shaped T fixed to it, into the shoulder and firing it with whatever remote works best. In those days I had the Takumar on a Canon FT, fired with a cable release.

I haven't got my rig set up properly yet, but have adapted a tripod and put a Manfrotto gimbal head on the "rail"....will post some pics when it's done. So far it works okay down to under 1/200 if I do my bit okay...still needs work though, as do I!

Ricardo, oystercatcher is just great.

For me either i only use 1.4TC, but yah i understand at times 600 is to near for big birds.
But for some of my above pictures it is cropped (but i must admit for 600, detail is great).

Interesting...

I could see myself using something similar in some circumstances. Not all of my shooting is full 180-degree panning as I'm sometimes much more head on to my subjects like this:

http://crosswindimages.com/img/s11/v27/p435293654.jpg

I'd trade having to do a little "pre-framing" with less real freedom of motion in order to gain a wee bit more stability in a case like this.

Yes obviously, as you surmise, you don't get a full 360 pan with a bipod, but you get a fair arc all the same. A really important piece of the apparatus would be a QR monopod attachment in the appropriate place, which means you can "hands off" whenever you want to. It then becomes even more stable than the average tripod!

That pic is a stunner....at that distance he's coming fast!

Looking for some imputs......I'm still looking for a long lens and like I said the 400mm 2.8L IS is really what would be a better choice in my opinion. But there has been a guy I know selling what appears to be a mint 600mm F4 with all the goodies. I believe the lens is about 10 yrs old with no IS.

Anyone know a value on a lens like this......is it worth it without the IS. The lens does look to be in perfect shape.

Thank you in advance

Goincarcrazy
19th of January 2012 (Thu), 16:12
The lens itself sounds ok. I think its heavier than the IS, but the IQ is nearly the same from what I've read/heard. One drawback is, as far as I know, Canon doesn't repair the non-IS Super tele's anymore, so if it did break for some reason, you'd be looking at a paperweight unless you found a shop that does work on them. The upside, is that usually those things were built like tanks so not a lot goes wrong unless its the operators fault...

As far as value, honestly I would just look at completed listings on ebay and past sales here on the forums (and on FM since I know a lot of obscure stuff goes through there). Off the top of my head, around 4000 seems to be the going rate, though I'm sure you'll find some more and some less.

Hollywoodgt
19th of January 2012 (Thu), 16:17
Thanks you sir...pretty much that is what I heard. I'll have to find out who would repair it if it broke. I just wonder how important the IS function is on a lens that big, sense most of the time it would be momo pod or tri pod?

Goincarcrazy

IS helps a lot both on an off tripod, though some people with the IS don't use it. All in preference I guess, but I love it. I never use a tripod for this thing, so I'm always hand holding it and IS is essential, though one person just posted a few pics the other day with the old 600 and they look as sharp as ever, so IS is more or less a convenience thing.

commonjunks

One thing you might want to consider as well is if you don't like it and need to unload it. A non-IS might take a long while longer to sell than an IS version, but it all boils down to what type of price you're getting it for in the first place. Best of luck and keep us posted on the goings on!

I have the earliest version of the 400mm f2.8 L. Just search the archive thread and you can see that it works fine, even with dings and scratches. The day will come I suppose when the motor will die and the lens will become a doorstop (no manual focus without the motor working). But it was very cheap comparatively, so will not complain. But tripod or heavy duty monopod is necessary for me to shoot with it.

It's a landscape lens as well!

This is not a critique, just curiosity on my part. With the original raw file I could have gone hog wild playing with the various shades and contrasts.

Up date......well I talk to the guy again. He wont budge off of $4900..00. He says that the lens is like brand new. I did find a place in chicago that works on older Canon lens, so if you need something for that 400mm let me know.

I presonally think that $4900.00 is to much for a 10yr old lens. I also do not believe it would be that easy to re-coup my money either.

Good call Charles! I'm just dying to have time to get a bit creative with many of these shots...what you saw was SOOC and does look a bit inspid, I must say!

Today (Saturday) is bright and sunny and while I'd love to be "playing"...there's a whole heap of stuff to do that won't wait! Trees to top, garden to rescue, etc...not to mention a Docking plan for a Russian fishing vessel that got into trouble down in Antarctic waters and has just made it here for repairs...she's waiting for the current occupant of the marine railway to be relaunched later this week, and I have to design the blocks for her to rest on.

And I thought that I was going to retire sometime soon???

I probably will, Patrick...thanks for commenting. I need to go through the sequence and see how best to present it as there are some others that I like as well...like these two...

^^ For me the orig pic is still the "one" as you can see the flare reflections on the side of the plane. Perhaps a lil touch on the pp side and this my friend is ready to be framed.
