Had a quick look through the image archive and could not see any for the 600 f4.

This image was taken using my 600mm + 1.4 converter on my 350d as I wanted the extra 1.6 crop. (equal to a total of 1344mm, i think  )

Full image and the 100% crop.

I will try to find some images without the converter to add to the thread later.

OK, so the actual focal length is only 840mm but the image produced is equal to a 1344mm lens on a 35mm camera.

Anyone else want to add pics please do.

Here's a couple of shots done with my 600 f4. Oop's, not working! I use mine for small birds on up to large mammals. While not as wieldly as the 500 f4, I don't usually yearn for a shorter focal length lens.
I'd post some image samples but the "Manage Attachments" tab doesn't seem to be working at the moment.

Go for the 600 f4.
I used to have the 500 f4 but recently moved to the 600 f4, apart from it being a "Beast" of a lens its only 3lb's more, just chuck something else out of the camera bag.
the extra reach is superb.
spend the money.

if you had stuk your 500mm on a 1.6 crop body it would have been longer than the 600mm on a 1.3crop :)

We just got our first 600mm in stock. Tested it in doors. I had to go to the other side of the house to get it to focus. And then I was able to get my buddy's eyeball into the frame. That lens is absolutely insane. One day I will get to play with the 1200. One day... :D

Gitzo: look at Series 3 or Series 5, i am sure there are another series of gitzo can handle those huge glasses, i am talking for monopod and tripod.
I have Gitzo 5540 got it yesterday, it is perfect to carry this lens no problem, only i need a head.

OK, THATS ENOUGH

I have to break my wallet and get this beast, i know that 400 f2.8L IS is calling me a lot, but if i get this lens [600] then the call of 400 will be little weak and i can resist it for a while.
Incredible clarity and sharpness, thats why i don't know why i want to get those long primes if i will not use that much, just looking at those results making me to think those primes are 'MUST' in our gear.

Thanks, you are too kind.

I'm sure anyone who had this lens would surely put all of their efforts into doing it justice.

It has sadly been returned to its owner, who I can not thank enough for letting me try it out.

I have purchased to 500mm. Lighter, not much shorter and less expensive. I will miss the 600mm though.:)

I just got my new 600mm L IS and I quickly discovered that my normal shooting range for backyard birds is way too close. Then I took it and the 1DM3, Mamiya heavy duty CF tripod, and Jobu Black Widow gimbal head to Ponce Inlet for surfer shots.

Unfortunately there was no surf to speak of. But there was a surfer girl just at the edge of my focus zone. The following images were shot at ISO 400, 1/2000s @ f10. The image was cropped to eliminate the bulk of the board and identification of the unknown girl. Then a 100 percent crop to show the sharpness. Both were reduced in size to meet the board size requirements. Enjoy.

Trying to see how close I could get to my backyard critters, no critters came out to play, so I focussed on a branch tip using the whole set of kenko extension tubes and a monopod with the 1DM3. The exposure was ISO 800, 1/100s @ f4, but that is a Kenko-induced fantasy, I'm sure. On the other hand--surprise, surprise--there was a critter on hand.

Took a quick trip yesterday through the wildlife preserve on Merritt Island. Some hits and misses but here are a few shots that give me hope that I will master the lens--someday.

This first set is with a Canon 1Ds Mark III, 600mm f4 L IS, no teleconverter. ISO 200, 1/800 @ f7.1. I forgot I had the polarizer filter in the lens, so the exposures were influenced by that light loss. Tripod and Black Widow Gimbal.

advaitin
8th of August 2008 (Fri), 11:16
The second set begins with the 1.4 converter. The birds were not usually close, so I soon changed to the 2x.

The mangrove is with the 1.4, 1/320s @ f6.3

The posturing juvenile is with the 2x, 1/500s @ f11.

advaitin

Next is the one handheld shot I tried, and only because just as I stopped the bird caught a snake. By the time I got the tripod deployed, the bird had moved away to enjoy the snack in privacy. 1200mm, 200 ISO, 1/400s @ f10.

Last, a couple of tripod shots. I keep forgetting to use a cable release and to weight the lens down for an exposure. I am not sure that Live View would help unless I employ a dark cloth as in olden days.

all 1200mm.

Standing in water. 1/320s @ f9.

On mangrove shrub, the same.

I stopped to shoot the moon because i am waiting to get one of those long primes such as 400 or 600, even with my 100-400 or 300 i am far and it is not closer, and i have to crop heavily to get about 90% of the moon to fill the frame.
Nice shot!

Wow, what a great moon shot! It was out when i left the house at 6:15am! I could see it all the way to work, swerved a few times staring at it, lol

When I left work at 4pm it was out again, I kept thinking wow, what's up with that, then when I logged onto Yahoo, I saw the report that it was the biggest moon this year!

I wanted to take pics but didn't have my camera with me.

Killer "pose" on the last one. They seem a bit soft maybe the snow fall? Mist ? makes them look soft ? Are they heavy crop?

hiker99

The second one is a heavy crop, but I think most of the softness is due to the constant snowfall that day.

Great images, a521! I had a chance to "play" with a 600mm f4 lens today (at a photo expo), and all I can say is WOW!! The separation/isolation of the subject and the bokeh are incredible!

I've also had the privilege of testing the EF 500 mm f4L I.S., and that lens also produces a "WOW" factor, but there was just something extra special about the 600.

If I ever win the lottery, I know one of the first lenses that will be on my list!

Hmmmmmm.............

I have a 400 DO, so I must decide whether or not to just skip 500, take 6.

As I mentioned in my reply above, I had a chance to "play" with a 600mm f4 lens today, as well as with the EF 500mm f4L I.S. a few months ago, and while that lens is soo sweet, the 600mm is in a different league altogether! At least IMHO.

Yes the weight difference is substantial, but the way the subject POPS into focus, and the isolation and bokeh are absolutely breathtaking!! It's one of those, "you have to see it to believe it" situations.

Don't get me wrong, the 500 f4 is a GREAT lens!! I'd KILL to own one! But from what I saw today through the viewfinder with the 600 f4, if I had my choice of either of the two, I would definitely go with the 600!

Again, just my two cents, but if you get the chance to check out the 600 f4, I definitely recommend it.

Good luck with your decision.

I can buy either 400 f2.8 or 500 or 600, owned 300 and i have 100-400 i am thinking to get 600 longer enough than just 500, even 500 or 600 can't be enough for some shots like birds, so for me 600 is the best choice, i never tried or tested 600 but i saw it in a store, i was lucky that i didn't touch it long enough to get cursed, and i also touched 400 f2.8 in the sport field [shooting football match] but not long enough, otherwise i will get both 400 and 600, and to be honest, after i bought hasselblad i don't feel so crazy about Canon lenses and i can wait long until i can afford one, and if i got my old prize then i was confusing between upgrading my hasselblad body or get more hassy lenses or buy 600, but one thing i am sure about is that next year i am planning to visit Africa with my 600. ;)

I posted a couple of herons earlier with the 2X. My biggest problem is trying to follow birds in flight. So far, I haven't done very well with the 600 even without the extender keeping the birds in the viewfinder. Practice I guess.
