Is this the guy with the damaged beak? Looks like it. His tongue shouldn't hang out that way.

Amazing captures ! I have never managed to get that close to a GBH . Every GBH I have ever seen has been so skittish I can't get within 100' of one.

Yes this is the injured GBH. He has a long tear in the skin under his beak. There is a graphic shot of his injury over at Wild66.com. I didn't post it here as it is very graphic.

It's been posted here too. Too bad they can't catch this guy. Things like this can be repaired. I've seen on TV where they can even repair a half shot away beak for a bird, with fibreglass of all things. :)

Two excellent shots with the second one's dramatic action taking well deserved credit. Its also good to see the heron has adapted to his injury. He obviously still has a good appetite.
